Re: 1958 Apache 38 Dually Dump Project
Nothing special, I bent a small semi-hook at the bottom of a tapered pry bar and cammed off the forward hinge mount bolt to pull the spring toward the firewall and hook/unhook, it's easier with the hood removed.

Re: 1958 Apache 38 Dually Dump Project
I have seen them spread with a floor jack and wrenchs inserted into the opened spring. Attach and pull the wrenchs. I always just used a brake spring tool or grabbed them with vice grips and strong armed it.

Yeah... vice grips and a quick tug seemed to be the fastest, easiest way for me, too. New hinges are nice.

Re: 1958 Apache 38 Dually Dump Project
Worked on the front axle a bit this weekend. Thought I'd have to get a new carrier because of worn spiders/cross pin and was thinking a detroit, but didn't want to spend the money for it. Fortunately, we were able to salvage parts from another old carrier, get a passable pattern on the old R&P, and reuse the open carrier.
So the front is together and ready, but I'm still struggling with pulling a NV4500/205 together on the cheap...looks like I'm going to bite the bullet and have one built. I want to pull this into a buddy's shop within the next few weeks and start the tear down.

That is a way cool truck man, you have to love the 1 tons, they are just awesome.
I will be looking forward to seeing how it turns out.

Re: 1958 Apache 38 Dually Dump Project
Well, I'm still working on pulling the drivetrain together before tearing it down.
The NV4500 has been built for a few weeks now and we're waiting on a new input shaft for a dodge 205 and adapter we picked up that was originally behind a 4500. Turned out to have a few issues, but after combining parts from both the 205s we have and chasing a couple new pieces (that were a challenge to source) we will hopefully have everything together in the next week or two. At that point, I'm really hoping to be able to make enough time to get it on a buddy's lift and start tearing into it.

Re: 1958 Apache 38 Dually Dump Project
Wow, didn't realize how much time has passed with so little progress. We've been driving this around when we can and gathering parts when we can't.
I've been working with Blumenthal Companies here in OKC on pulling together everything needed to drop a NV4500/205 behind the BBC. Initially, I was very disappointed with the lack of progress and misinformation I was being fed by an individual within the organization and had made the decision to take my business elsewhere...after a few months of being mislead! I did, however, recognize that Blumenthal's is a leader in their industry and was the most capable of building exactly what I wanted. I contacted a general manager within the company, explained my poor experience, and was pleasantly surprised to find them apologetic, accommodating, and eager to reverse my sour impression. From that point forward, progress was still slow, but I was kept updated with honest information and knew that they were making every effort to build what I wanted at a reasonable cost. After a bit of parts chasing, some back and forth with Advance Adapters, and pieces from a number of 205's, I have a 5.61 4500 with the 29 spline output rear to a dodge 205 (completely rebuilt w/32 spline f/r) and a chevy 10 spline input with AA bell housing. Also picked up a used ORD passenger hi-steer arm

Great parts! It is looking great. What spring hangers are you going to go with in the front?

I'll probably just make the hangers/shackles, still haven't decided which front springs to go with. The longer (52-56") versions ride better but start driving the need for a track bar and I'd rather not introduce that into the mix. Still working on that...

Re: 1958 Apache 38 Dually Dump Project
Are you going to be able to retain your stock wheels with the new front axle? This thing is going to be killer. Heck it already is.

Re: 1958 Apache 38 Dually Dump Project
The wheels aren't stock, but yes, I plan on running the 19.5 wheels that are on the truck now.

Re: 1958 Apache 38 Dually Dump Project
Oh, cool deal. Are the P-30 chassis style 8 lug 19.5 wheels found on some bread trucks?

Re: 1958 Apache 38 Dually Dump Project
Still gathering parts...installed a 11" CF2 clutch along with a hi-torque starter before bolting it all together to check clearances and work out details with the slave cylinder, PTO, and TC shifters.
Since it's cooled down a bit, my son and I spent a couple hours in the garage making a stand to hold the drivetrain up.
