Three thermostats?! I assume that is because one alone wouldn't have enough flow rate?

That's right. I forget what the factory specs. give on the gpm it pumps thru those things, but it's unbelievable. When I get a chance, I'll look it up.

I think I've posted this before but not on this thread. Interesting tid-bits about these motors. This site is where I get my info, plus from a factory service manual I have. At least I can document what sounds like a tall tale.

Oil pump: 17 gallons per minute.
Water pump @ 2400rpm 118 gallons per minute.

http://www.6066gmcguy.org/TwinSix.htm

With this radiator, This set-up holds 12.5 gallons of coolant. I measured it so I'd be sure to have enough anti-freeze in it. I bet I'll have to increase the capacity some way before it's drivable.

Looking good, I really like the old body style better. Glad to hear that it is running.

Kevin: Glad you chimed in. We may be coming thru there later in the winter.
We'll feed you guys that steak we promised, but haven't made it yet. I hope Texas still has steaks since this drought we're all having.

This body style is alot of fun to work with. It's all bolted together. Also reminds me of the pickups and trucks I grew up with. Makes me feel like a kid again and want to go coyote hunting with greyhounds.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING TO ALL NEXT THURSDAY

Re: 84 GMC C2500, V12 powered

Mitch: You did post the other day. No, I haven't done anything more concerning cooling, I've been running some at low rpm to get some run time on it, but doing other stuff for a change.
I got the tach hooked up so I can see what the temp does at different rpms. I've run it about 10-12 hrs and 30 gals of propane so far.
I'm sure I'm going to need a remote radiator in the the bed. There's not enough space up front for any bigger radiator without cutting it up more and look like a butchered Peterbuilt.
What is the height and width of the fan you have posted? I can use an 18" fan OVERALL in front.
I have the '72 Ford F-350 radiator, core measurements, 26H x 24W, 4 row, I could use in the bed. Space wouldn't be an issue back there.
I'm trying to get fenders, running boards, and bed rough mounted so I'll know where I might run the lines back there.
I'll pm and we'll talk details and transport.

Bumpers: I'll plan to use the '46 bumpers. My wife seldom offers her ideas, but she came to the shop yesterday and ask if I was using the '84 bumpers. She thought they looked too "modern", like you guys.
Thanks,
Cayoterun

I don't think it is. As far as I know, this motor was last run on natural, and generally you have to lean them out on propane. Exhaust smells pretty rich, I'll check tomorrow.
Rap-em-Pappy put gasoline carbs on his and heat is still a problem.

When they were on pumps, we'd go at night. If the manifolds were cherry red, and fire out the stub exhaust pipes about 2 inches, they were just right. If one outlet at head into the manifold was darker than the others, then you had a weak cylinder.
With no load, that don't work.

Just stumbled upon this thread.

I'll be sitting the 454 into my '46 rat rod very soon. I got the tunnel ram intake installed this weekend.

Hello, Puppy:
Neat project your working on. Do you have a build thread? If so, where? I'd like to follow your progress. Maybe we could swap info when we hit a snag we don't know how to fix.
Welcome to the board, Lot's of great, helpful people on here. They've sure help me with a lot of suggestions, and comments.
Thanks, for posting,

Re: 84 GMC C2500, V12 powered

you are telling me that you cant find a big arse radiator tat will fit behind that grill? you got like 5 foot you can work with ?
or am i not seeing something. you could cut and modify that rad support area to fit a short wide rad in there..

dunno.. Id probably need to see it in person to get off my tangent here on this one.

Re: 84 GMC C2500, V12 powered

Same bumper back with it's truck. I think it looks better, too, so does my wife, (and Thumper). When the better half approves, ------don't touch it!!

Mitch: I think if you could see behind the grill, you could see the limited space. The inner fenders are funneled to force all the air thru the existing radiator support. I wish there was room to mount a big combine radiator up front.

It looks cool!

Just stick two radiators in there, a horizontal one right in front of that one down at the bottom then plumb it all together.

Thanks, Locomotive Breath:
Had quite a little blow for awhile, but the good side is we got some much needed rain before the blowing snow. Still need much more, but glad we got this much.

Re: 84 GMC C2500, V12 powered

Wife and I took some travel trailer time off in sunny Calif. Had dry roads all the way until west of Amarillo, Tx. Got slicker than snot for awhile, but didn't last long.

V-12 cooling questions----again?
Why can't I put expanded metal in the bed floor, draw fresh air from under truck, lay radiators face down/w elec. fans, then if needed, an expanded metal shield over the top of them? Only purpose would be to keep them below top bed level and out of sight. Also have plenty of room to work with.

The propane tank mounted against the cab would be the only other thing in the bed.

Would it work?

Calif is always nice to visit but I can't wait to get home to Idaho once I'm gone. I don't see why putting the radiators in the bed lain down wouldn't work for you. I'm sending a video you might get a kick out of. Enjoy...Vernski

Re: 84 GMC C2500, V12 powered

now you can definately fill the bed and cover with expanded steel. id make sure you had dang good gusseted ribs in there maby 1 1/2 in tubing would work. or hell round oilfield pipe (the small stuff) would weigh a ton.. but would still look cool..
it would keep up with the farmer motif you have going with it haha.

id be worrid about hosing and making sure the water pump has enough volume to move that much fluid.. youd be looking at 6-8 gallons of fluid.
id even consider a remote oil cooler, a tube type.. or hell you can run small side by side trans coolers in the normal rad spot to have a dedicated cold air cooling for them. (inexpensive coolers also! that's a bonus)

Re: 84 GMC C2500, V12 powered

GMC: That is sharp. The louvered cover sure masks what it covers. I can see how I could run the cover all across the bed, and have hinges for access and protection.

Vernski: Thanks for the video, BUT, what in the world kind of motor izz zatt!!! Whatever, it's one nice build.
This country boy hates that Cali. traffic. We don't start breathing again until we hit the Arizona line coming back.

Mitch: I think/hope we'll be ok on water pump capacity, factory manual says water pump moves 117gpm@2400rpm. The restriction of all the crooked plumbing might create a problem for us. However, by laying it/them flat, I can hit the machinery/constuction salvage yards, maybe find a huge radiator and have only one.

At least with this info, I can go back to the barn with a new approach to the problem.
Any other ideas are welcome anytime. Maybe we can someday hear the old dude run down the road. When that happens, I think it might go on e-bay, then this 'ol geezer put the tools away, sweep the shop and turn out the lights.

Thanks,
Cayoterun
