Re: Where is my 60-66 Chevy or GMC vin number?
I have a 1961 Chevy short bed with VIN # 1C144K108380. I'm trying to figure out if it was originally a Fleetside or Stepside. Where can I find the model # on it?

Re: Where is my 60-66 Chevy or GMC vin number?
You can't. You need to look for clues. Does it have or has it ever had the little triangle fillers at the back of the cab just inside the cab corners? All stepsides had those little fillers.. its also possible it was a cab and chassis and didn't have a bed originally.

Re: Where is my 60-66 Chevy or GMC vin number?
The triangle pieces are what first got me trying to figure it all out. My truck currently has a stepside bed on it, but not the triangle pieces. Also the truck has been repainted at some point prior to me buying it and the paint under the respray doesn't match from the bed to the front of the truck. I have a Fleetside shortbed I was going to put on it but just wanted to know what it originally was.

Re: Where is my 60-66 Chevy or GMC vin number?
If you look under the cab where the little filler parts would attach. There will be 3 screw holes to hold the edge of the filler on and one hole further forward for a support bracket. No screw holes means it wasn't originally a stepside.. but if they are there.. it most likely was.

Re: Where is my 60-66 Chevy or GMC vin number?
Alright I checked the cab on the 61 and it has the three screw holes. I also checked under my 62 fleetside longbed and it has the holes as well. The 62 is all original...so I'm thinking maybe they all have those holes.

No they don't have those screw holes unless it had those fillers..

Re: Where is my 60-66 Chevy or GMC vin number?
Just picked up my first C10 ('64 Chevy) and am checking the VIN out. Mine is 4C144H143128
Looking at this chart, I am not seeing "H" designation for the assembly plant as is in my VIN? |

Re: Where is my 60-66 Chevy or GMC vin number?
So, I tried to get a title for my truck and part of that process is taking the vehicle to the sherriff office vehicle theft unit and they give you a forum so you can complete the process.
They weren't accepting the door frame plate with the serial number and wanted the vin from the chassis, which they believe to be on the drivers side on the top of the frame rail, just in front of the rear cab mount. So, since I might be replacing the cab anyways, I cut open the floor to expose that part of the frame and there was nothing there. There was nothing that I could see on the front part of the frame (horns? area). From what I've read, Chevys may have had these stampings on the frame, but the GMC's didn't, especially my year of truck, 1960. Thanks for any tips. Any thoughts on this? |

Re: Where is my 60-66 Chevy or GMC vin number?
There is no VIN on a GMC frame..
That's a fact that many argue with. It's not a chevy. Gmc is a different comany in the 60s. So chevy info does not apply to your gmc. Quote:

Might I ask where your serial # / vin is located? Is it the drivers side front door jam? Posted via Mobile Device |

Re: Where is my 60-66 Chevy or GMC vin number?
On my 63, it's on the A pillar at the front of the door jam.
On my 66, at the top.

Re: Where is my 60-66 Chevy or GMC vin number?
Hello all, I need help. I know this thread has been quiet for awhile but I'm going to bring it back to life. I recently came into possession of what I thought and what the title said was a 63 GMC C10. After reading most of the post on this thread is decided to verify the VIN # to the title and could not find and plates on the Cab. So I decided to check the LH frame and found these 0151610 in the two places mentioned in previous post. I can't find any information about this # anywhere, and it does not match the title VIN# any help would be appreciated. "0151610"

Re: Where is my 60-66 Chevy or GMC vin number?
Gmc does not have have a vin on the frame.
If indeed you bought an original gmc. Gmc is not a "C10". C10 is a chevy designation. A 1/2 ton GMC is a 1000 series. IF your GMC is a coil rear suspension, but was built in the US, it has probably received a frame swap. The vin on a 63 is on the drivers side door jam next to the windshield. If it's an earlier cab, it could be on the drivers kick panel in front of the vent.

Re: Where is my 60-66 Chevy or GMC vin number?
Thank you for the information I did not know any of that, I'm just learning bits and pieces again thank you. So now my problem is that I have no way to find out what the real VIN# is since someone removed all tabs and placards from inside the cab.
