Re: Sold American!

I have never owned a foreign vehicle and have never seen the need for one. Most of my tools are U.S.A. Made.My wife needed some new flatware and she found Liberty made in the States. Also some new dishes Made U.S.A. I guess we are pretty particular what we eat off of.I kind of like it that way.I got tired of cutting down a Christmas Tree on my land so we went with artificial American made.I support the American worker wholeheartedly because they support me when they eat the food I produce.

Yeah, I know.

I have a 2004 Silverado SS, and it wasn't even made in America.

Re: Sold American!

It's been quite a few years since I first bought a Genuine GM part at the dealership that was made in China. I think the first part like that was a tailgate support cable for a '92.

Re: Sold American!

I bought a 1970 Chevelle SS 396 in 1980 that had a spun rod bearing. I pulled the engine and it is on a stand in the corner of my shop (The car is in a shed).
I pulled that 50 year old grommet and used it rather than use China parts.

I think we can all agree that today's rubber parts are made with far less quality than the originals were, as well as most anything else for that matter. Technology has made it possible to design and manufacture a specific life span of many things. Cost more and shorter lives.

I used to scoff when people talked about "Planned Obsolescence". It should actually be called "cheap stuff", and the Chinese have that down to a science. I will confess right here that our family has bought 3 vehicles in the last 6 years from Kia, simply because they have the best warranty. I personally would like to sell my little econobox that I bought 4 years ago and get another old truck. I don't drive enough these days that mileage is really a concern. I've put about 16k miles on that car in those 4 years. I'd love to have an old step side with the chains on the tailgate rattling while I'm driving down the street. Step sides seem to be rare, and the prices I'm seeing are keeping my butt in my little econobox.

Re: Sold American!

Planned obsolescence is a very real practice that began after WWII. It just means they started looking at components as only needing to last as long as the rest. Not built hoping to last forever any more. Purely a matter of economics, not some evil action with the intention to leave you on the side of the road, as some might like to see it

The thing that makes it all worse is when they print CHINA where you will always see it. The good old stuff didn't have USA printed there.

I know there are only a few companies who own almost all the tire companies. Last time I checked only one was American. I have been making sure I am buying tires made in the USA all along. I've had younger guys defend them as being good tires for the money when I say I could never bring myself to run a tire on a Chevy that said Kumho, Yokohama, or any other Asian brand. There is more to it than tread wear, handling, or any other performance feature. I don't run foreign tires on my American truck just like I don't put cheese on my stir fry, and you don't see raw sausage served on a sushi tray

Crazy. When I bought a new pair of Redwing loggers a couple months ago all the top line was made in the states with the cheaper made in thailand.

I have 3 Harley's. Sure parts are made in other countries but the tour in York you see most of the sheetmetal made in house along with the frame ,engines forged in Milwaukee. AMF WAS THE WORST THING TO HAPPEN TO HARLEY.

Re: Sold American!

Had a conversation with a local landscaper he has 7 trucks. Every one says AMERICAN MADE on the windshield. One of the peel and stick jobs . Yes they were made in America but they are owned buy an Italian company . My 3500 CTD was made in Mexico by a German company . He didnt like hearing that, he thought Chrysler bought fiat.

Just like alot of people think they bought Daimler.

The NEW cars of the late 1980s and 1990s produced very little pollution.

Of course there were still tens of millions of older vehicles on the road at that time. It has taken a while for most of them to be off the road. Meanwhile the EPA has cranked standards from 95% to 99% pure

Like you said took years to see the results. In 1994 wife had a new Ford escort wagon . Basically a Mazda I was driving a 1970 oldsmobile delta 88 convertible. My first new vehicle was a 2008 GMC Savanna extended wb .

They were cleaner than their older counterparts but still produced tons of emissions each year. If they were so clean why do they impose new regulations to clean them up more. And new cars still dump tons of emmisions into the atmosphere every day

Because once a bureaucracy exists, they have to justify their continued existence even after the original problem has been solved

And new cars mostly just emit carbon dioxide and water vapor. In some places polluted by other sources, car exhaust is cleaner than the air going into the engine.

My old Carhartts were made in Irvine, KY. I've never bought Red Wings not made in USA. Levis are my biggest disappointment. Not even 501s!!!! I think for $80 a pair they could be made in USA! They sure aren't the heavy denim they once were anymore.

That can be debated. Agreed their reputation on quality went down, but even the new Harley company gave credit to AMF for keeping the company afloat as well as making some positive design advancements. Also for creating the FX line which started a whole new market that was right for America. I've had '74 and '78 Super-Glides and they both were good to me. A favorite bike of mine was a '72 Electro-Glide. The old schoolers didn't like that the company got bought by a golf cart & bowling ball company from the get-go. I think it was mostly just a popular biker attitude to trash AMF more than anything. I know people are paying big money for that era now. Classics made for the hiways of today

I always bought my bearings at the dealership. In the '80s I bought my first 100% GM made in Japan wheel bearing for a '71. I started buying Timken and have ever since. If I'm not mistaken they are all made here
