I'm not so driven anymore. I do a load in the morning while it's still cool and that's all. Nice enough weather but it's so smokey that we aren't riding the horses in the PM

My truck & loader wasn't so big: a C/50 and homemade loader. I did have hydraulic grapple but it didn't rotate. The boom had a heel for the butt of the log and that's how I kept it from swinging out of control. Just four valves like a backhoe: main, jib, swing, and grapple. I still can't run a backhoe because I always move the jib the wrong way.

I had to trade everything off when I got sick and went back to school. I heard the GMC and loader got burned up in a forest fire

I bought the other 20 acres mostly to keep anyone from building on it. Also it will make a nice campsite if family or friends visit in the summer. There's even about 200' of seasonal creek down at the bottom end

Right now I'm working through a 50K# semi load that I bought last fall and had dumped in the sagebrush. It's a 1/4 mile haul to the house. I've gone through all the dry stuff and trying to get the rest blocked and stacked in the yard for winter after next when it will be good and dry, before I go out and start scrounging dead trees from the woods again.

I've got a bunch of misc saw work also: trimming lower limbs and attacking some of the thickets. That gets pretty discouraging because you spend more time dragging and stacking than cutting. Then I bought another 20 acres so that will need some forest management too

80 degrees and smokey today. I ain't doin' saw work in the afternoon.

Saws I have an obsession with saws . My usual arsenal going into the wood I have 10 more most old homelites and poulands My little saw 36 inch bar 395xp husky I have a 48 inch for it now

I've got a Stihl so I only need one

And it's 23 years old. When I need a new fuel/oil cap or bar nut, the shop acts like I have an antique I think my old 045 would still run but it got the ethanol sickness. Don't know if there's even parts anymore...?

Long time ago there was a Stihl TV ad (in Alaska, anyway): "I ran over my new Stihl saw with a truck, and I broke the truck!"

That is so cool! I know nothing about that kind of set up. Sure learn a lot here on the board that isnt 67-72 related. Now Im gonna have to read up on that.

Re: What did you do today not on your truck...

I had an old XL when they were blue. It shook so hard that the handle screws would come loose and jump out and I would catch it while I was cutting.

I think it was a 330 that I bought brand new. I used it about three months in Alaska before something came apart under the flywheel. I got it fixed but it wouldn't run at all at over 10K' ASL in Colorado. For that matter, neither would the Huskies of that era. They would run about ten minutes and then you would have to let them cool off a while. Stihl had the isolated carb so it wouldn't vapor lock.

Then I had two 045's that I ran for years. Always need a spare when you're 50-60 miles from town. I got talked into modernizing and bought an 044. It did okay until I blew it up on a hundred degree day in Montana. So then I bought the 046 and stihl running it today. But I only used it professionally about six months.

Stihl don't like cold weather though. You have to work them really hard to keep them up to operating temperature in the winter. Firewood cutting is okay but falling/limbing they start to sputter. If I was timber falling again, I would run Stihl in the summer and Husky in the winter. Trouble is they don't use the same bars so you have to duplicate everything Doesn't matter since most all jobs is feller-buncher anymore. Sit in a cab and push buttons and look at a computer screen.

Stihl ms290 for me, damn good saw with both an 18” and 20” bar.
I though I was serious about my firewood before these last few posts! Nice work!

I've been working on my 20' x 40' lean-to hot and heavy since the wind storm damaged my barn. Here's a few pictures of the lean-to and the damage to the main support posts in my barn. All 8 of the main support posts are either broken or cracked. I'm not sure whats keeping it up. I thought I would include a picture of the "other" truck with my locally sawn, full dimension 2x8 rafters and 2x4 purlins. They are all from reclaimed power poles. I am now ready for the sheet metal roof.

The '72 Dually has been earning her keep on this one.....

Most people do think it's a Legends car are a dwarf. Well it is part legends I think. It's fiberglass and metal both. I'm not 100% sure what it is though .
But it's 100% electric. 48 volts. There 2 batteries in front of the rear axle and the 4 behind it. 8 volts. Runs 28 MPH and later this winter I hope to have it up a little faster.

So the lean-to is holding up your barn?

I cut another load of wood this morning. Having coffee and a snack right now and planning to go cut another load while I'm dressed for it.

I never thought about building the lean-to on the East side of the barn instead of the shop, to prop it up....

Bucked up half of the white oak today . Figure there's around 10k in the trailer by my calculation the trunk was over 15k without the limbs . Going to have to put on the the weight distribution bars the hitch is in the grass . Didnt expect to have this much weight. Only going up my driveway so ya its overloaded

Made a run to the dump. Also cleaned around my truck so I could see it again.

And my wife is making her version of shoop. House smells great!

I got the grass clipped behind the house for the last time this year. All this talk of chainsaws reminded me that as it cools off I need to thin the oak saplings and buck up the deadfalls.

Re: What did you do today not on your truck...

How are the brakes??? That thing looks cool in pictures but It has to be a gas (er, volt) to drive. I'd like to see a video... hint hint.

I've just been poking around the place. Moving things out of the shed or over to the far side so now I can start digging out for concrete. I did a little more concrete work on those steps at the garage, and built some shelves inside it.

Moving the barn over has been a thought circling around for a long time. A burden really, with needing a solution for that tree situation, other than expensive crane work to cut it down. I'm liking the thought of the big old tree staying since such an old house seems like it should have at least one big old tree somewhere. Maple limbs can be cut way back and they still sprout out a nice canopy. But trimming is for later (I have a climber who works cheap). Right now I'm happy to have confirmed a plan and moving one with it.

The shakes are bad to where they are leaking at the bottom, and now the board & batten is rotting at the bottom. I couldn't let it wait any longer. As it is now, due to the tree, I have to climb through the fence to access that patch of property to even look at that side of the barn. So I hadn't seen the rot until this weekend. I knew the soffit and fascia were bad. No wonder it's so damp in there.

I don't have a place to put everything in the barn while this happens. But I've been all through it, moved a lot out to elsewhere, got rid of some things, seen every inch of floor again after many years, cleaned, and organized. I have things up top to get rid of and other things to move elsewhere on the property still. It's inch by inch and a real challenge with where to move what to where. I have room to do what I need to prep for moving and when it comes time to move it I'll just have to move some things onto the slab outside and tarp it. It's been overwhelming to think about, but now that it's in motion I can see the light at the end of the tunnel.
