Today we welded up a little rust we found yesterday, removed the rusty A-pillar drip rails, and continued stripping old paint and seam seal.
Stripping away the old seam sealer revealed deteriorated A-pillar drip rails on both sides. We were both relieved to see that the A-pillars weren't rusted through. They're pitted, but still sound. I'll weld in new drip rails once the cab is sitting upright again. |

I borrowed a borescope from a friend yesterday so that we could check the condition of the sheetmetal inside the roof cavity, A-pillars, etc. and determine whether or not we would need to pursue some form of rust treatment in those areas. After all of the rust repair we've done on this cab thus far, I was quite surprised at just how clean it is inside. I did find more insulation in the roof cavity that we'll need to blow/vacuum out of there (thanks, mice), but the sheetmetal is all in great shape. At most, we might use a cavity wax at a later date, but honestly, if the sheetmetal is that clean after the life this truck has led, it should have no troubles with the pampered life it will lead from here on out.

Does the seam sealer take paint well? I too am worried about underneath my roof and places I can't see. My drip rails are in real good shape with little to no surface rust. My truck had a ton of paint on it. Truck is looking good.

Seam sealer has no trouble being top coated with primer/paint. Actually, I plan to shoot a coat of primer on the firewall/cowl tomorrow morning. Thanks.

How did you go about narrowing the cab supports? Did simply narrow the "rear" end and not the part that connects to the floor? Thanks.
Amazing thread btw. I'm too lazy to actually make one, but everyone on here is great at documenting and what not. I took last weekend off to work on other projects and go to a ball game, but we were back to work on the '65 this weekend. The Raptor bed liner coating is drying on the underside of the cab as I type this.
This just felt so wrong. Scuffing up the newly painted underside in preparation for the Raptor. All scuffed and ready to mask, wipe, and shoot. It's difficult to really capture it with the camera, but it turned out great. We shot the underside, as well as the front fenderwell areas. I set the regulator to deliver 60 psi at the shutz gun, and it was a very simple product to lay down. |
