Re: 51' 3100 build in PA New to Site
Thanks guys, really. It still hasn't sunk in yet. But I am still trying to fine tune some things. This weekend I have to install a fuel regulator and an air/fuel gauge. So that means I have to take my header off and drill and weld a bung for the o2 sensor. In the morning the thing will fire right up no problem, but as I drive it and turn it off it doesn't want to start. So I have to pump the pedal, hold it down, pump the pedal then it will go. Once I figure that out I'll be taking it on some longer trips. I changed the fuel pump but I think I am getting a vapor lock of some sort. Or it is an internal carb issue maybe.
Oh and I have to definitely put some more sound deadener in it because it is a little loud. I have to block off the side vent where the OG heater went and there are openings in the firewall too. Then when I get some more money I'll insulate the hood or spray it. I think that would help alot. I have a shifter my friend made me that I have to put on and cut down and work on some more interior doo daads. Stay tuned

Re: 51' 3100 build in PA New to Site
May 30th
Ok so May is over, but I feel like it was a great month. Got the truck on the road but I am still ironing out some kinks. My main issue is the fuel/carb problem. I just installed an o2 sensor and fuel regulator. I am running an eddy 600 cfm elec choke, mechanical pump with return, running 3/8 in and out line. running 5.5-6 psi as it fluctuates. Running two fuel filters, one before carb and one at the tank. below is a link to another forum that I been posting the issue on (I hope this is allowed!! as I don't like to clog this thread up with too much in depth engine problems) http://www.hotrodders.com/forum/vapo...ml#post1427293 there is also a link to youtube with footage of the fuel filter while running, and when it is shut off. Also I think it is just running rich as my gauge is reading about 13-13.5 instead of the 14.6 they suggest at idle and cruise. When I go WOT the lights all go out so I am assuming I am running past 15 on my gauge which would indicate a very lean condition. I have been playing with my timing too, but I am leaning more towards the carb and shut off issue. I will be trying a carb spacer to help with the heating of the carb problem. My engine temps pretty steady at 185-190. I also added some more hush mat to help with the noise, but it is still loud. Lastly I been working on tearing down this metal garage that I am getting. I will be putting it on blocks and making this my new home for the next year until I get time to build my real garage.

Re: 51' 3100 build in PA New to Site
99 - I've been hassling with this same issue with one of my old cars lately. The car starts fine when cold, but doesn't want to start after being driven. So, the "fuel percolating out of the bowl" theory sounds plausible to me. According to the Holley website, dropping the fuel level in the bowls by about 1/8" below the sight plugs "might" help with this problem. I haven't tried this yet, but plan to within the next few days .... too many other chores to get done this week. Hope that this helps you!!!

Re: 51' 3100 build in PA New to Site
Yeah I have heard holley's are far more temper mental about the bowls heating up. I am goin to run a heat spacer and also plan on tearing back
into the carb. I mean my intake gets hot, its aluminum an boy does that stuff get real hot. I'll re check the floats and everything else. thanks

Re: 51' 3100 build in PA New to Site
June 4th weekend,
Here is some footage of my buddy driving the truck. He got super hyped on seeing me driving up the road because he likes the stance, so now he wants one. I think it will be great, so we might work something out to split a truck or figure out a way to get one going for him. Tore the carb apart and there was quite a bit of sediment in the bowls and my seat filter. So I replaced those and re adjusted the floats. Then put a 1/2" spacer under it. Seems to have really helped with it starting better when hot. But I am still showing a bit rich at idle and cruise. However, it seems more stable than before at WOT. I think I might swap my jets out and see if that helps. I blew my ignition switch because the wire on the solenoid was coming off and arching, so I replaced that and got a fuse for that line, so that will be another security feature I'll have. Worked on painting the inside of the doors. I still got to paint some trim and touch up some stuff, then get some good pics so I'll post those when I get it finished up. here is the bed and rest of the misc parts I got, way to good a deal to pass up, I'll actually use these on my 55.1 that I'll be starting this fall.

Re: 51' 3100 build in PA New to Site
dave, the fan that size wouldn't fit in the front. To be honest I like it how it
is cause you can get to the wires easier. I got the fan and rad from champion which is all over ebay. I am sure they just buy or have someone make their fans. It is a 16" I think and a 2700cfm. I have absolutely no cooling probs. Shannon, yeah I been looking at a 49' gmc for a while, but couldn't justify doing another truck before the one I already have lined up. So I thought well maybe I can go halves on one with my friend or just let him buy it. We'll see but it would be nice to have more of these on the road than rusting away. Yeah the bed I got was blasted but is getting some flash rust, it has a few dents I need to knock out and it should be ok.

Re: 51' 3100 build in PA New to Site
The pass peep mirror I got from classicparts.com I can't see anything out of it, not one thing. Partially because my vent windows are cracked but still the thing is worthless. Unless I try it in different positions which I have not.
The drivers mirror is prolly a 5" instead of 4 and i can see a tiny bit, but it is still worthless, more for looks. I am definitely changing them. I honestly thought about some cali mirrors, I do like them, you can see and they are different. If I were you, I'd run them.

Re: 51' 3100 build in PA New to Site
June 12th weekend,
Well I drove the truck up to Erie PA which is about 50 miles. I was a bit nervous because my 5th gear has a little noise to it. But it drove really good actually. I am at about 2grand at 65mph so thats not too bad. Maybe someday I'll go to a 3.08 instead of the 3.42 rear. While I was up there I met up with some friends in Pittsburgh, so I was taking them for a first time spin and it was quite embarrassing. I noticed the first sputter I have had to this date and then my air/fuel gauge went way lean, on top of that I hit the hardest bump I have ever hit, then I hear "clunking" so it barely wanted to stay running so I pulled over and eventually just towed it back to my buddies. Next morning the clunking went away, which I think was the throw out bearing sticking or something in the clutch or tranny because when you engage the clutch that noise went away, but none the less it is gone as of now. But I am running way too lean,so I am wondering if something is back up with this carb. So I'm gonna tear it apart, after I check for some vaccum leaks next weekend.

Well, that kinda sucks. Nothin worse than brakin down. Least you can fix it. It will just take awhile to work all the kinks out. Best thing you can do is just keep putting miles on it. Enjoy. Least you did'nt have to walk.

June 19th weekend
Ok I didn't work on my truck this weekend. But I did take it over to my buddies house to show them. The pic of me is about all you will get. The filter effect is from the phone, it is a really cool effect. Goes great with old autos I think. I just got some carb plates today, so I'm gonna put them on and see if that wasn't my problem on the vacuum leak. I'm thinking it definitely is from the spacer I put on. It is a square bore spacer on a spread/square bore intake. Seemed dicey when I put it on and I think that is the culprit. However the spacer really helped with hot start. I occasionally get run on still though. Lastly, I'll be launching my website soon called coffee and customs, which will be the door logos I'm putting on. I think you guys will dig all the shirt designs I been making and what all I'll have to offer. I'll keep yinz posted. I think I got to up my memberships to be able to promote stuff, so I'll have to do that.

Re: 51' 3100 build in PA New to Site
Here is a sneak peak of the layout. I'll have a page called the "rescue network" that is dedicated to saving vehicles from the scrap yard. I want to try and get a section on all the sites that is the same concept. They can even use the same name. I hate finding stuff that is too far away or I dont have enough money to just go buy and people are gonna scrap it. oh it makes me sick. anyway, this is a moch up of what I am going for. Hopefully I am aloud to post this. The logo you see will be my door logo, but prolly just the black and gold part.

Re: 51' 3100 build in PA New to Site
July 2nd weekend
Well last weekend I put my 750 carb on and had it running perfect (video). I totally thought that was my problem, the carb. Well I came back this weekend fired it up and it ran like crap again. basically it has a vacuum leak. So I put my 600 back on, spacer, no spacer, carb plate, gasket this, gasket that no luck. So I was spraying carb cleaner on my EGR block off plates and noticed some revs, atleast I think I did. So I tore the plate off and it appeared to have some burn marks on it. I put a different gasket on but that wasn't the problem. I think the block off plate (some cheapy do dad) is too thin and actually is bent, so I am going to cut out my own thicker one and put it on and hopefully get tighter seal. Other than that I just can't locate the leak. I did manage to put my upper steering column in that I had to source a bearing for. I originally bought a $40 repro one so I could run the horn, but it was just crap, so I got a sealed bearing in and I like it. Also worked on some door trim, will get good interior pics soon, promise. Very soon I am putting door logos on and or one for now. I am working on my site. Getting labels, bags and coffee ready and hopefully I'll get the site and store up soon.

Re: 51' 3100 build in PA New to Site
99,
was reading back thru your thread. I know that we are using the same EZ wiring kit. Got a question....did you have any issues with the electric fan kicking on. Ive got mine all wired up, the temp gauage is working and reading correctly but the fan wont kick on. Im not sure where to start. I have power to and from the circuit breaker and thats all I have. I know that I wont have any power to the fan until the realy kicks in. Any idea how I can test the rest of the system. Also, once I get this taken care of I have a question about the tail light section. Thats for another day. Looking forward to seeing your logo on the truck. brian

Re: 51' 3100 build in PA New to Site
rhodog77
I haven't had any problems with my fan. I got my relay off of ebay. I think alot of people sell the same one. basically it wires directly to the battery aka hot and then the other wire on that fuse for the relay goes to the fan. Your fan will have most likely a black and blue wire. You can wire hot to either one but reversing the wires will make the fan push or pull. EZ has a grey wire for the fan. If I remember (don't quote me cause I am not with the truck and I am not sure if I ever wrote this down) but the longer of the grey wire runs out and to the fuse for the relay itself I think. Then there is another grey wire inside the cab. I honestly and drawing a blank on what I did with that one. I think it gets capped off, or you can use it for a switch if you want. Do you have the right Temperature sending unit for the relay?? I tried one that didn't come with the relay and it wouldn't kick on, so I put the one that came with my relay in and it worked. I put mine in the side of the block. I have another temp port on my intake which I use for my temp gauge in the cab. There is a wire that goes from your relay fuse block to your temp sending unit. Hope I didn't loose you but I just don't have anything to reference right now. Can you send me some pics? But definitely make sure you got the right temp sending unit, that could be the problem if you have it wired correctly. I called EZ to find out how to do it, but it's a crap shoot getting a hold of the tech guy. Great product just not enough customer support sometimes. I honestly thought of making a book on how to wire these trucks with their kit cause I got so frustrated with not having answers. Shoot me over your tail question. I have my notes I kept so I should be able to answer that.

Re: 51' 3100 build in PA New to Site
99,
Did some wiring hunting tonight. I am running the sending unit that came with the relay kit. double checked the wiring diagram and all the connections. here is what I came up with. I have power from the battery to the circuit breaker....power from the circuit breaker to the relay....power from the fusebox/ignition to the relay. Im assuming that I should have power from the sending unit to the relay...I dont. I checked it with my temp gauge showing 200 degrees and nothing. When you get a chance can you put a test light to your sending unit and see if you have power there with the ignition on, cool motor and hot motor. I think that I either have a bad sending unit or a bad relay. As far as the 2 grey wires. I dont have any power to the one marked "fan fan" but i do have power to the one marked "fan power". The funny thing is the one marked fan power is much shorter than the one marked fan fan. I spoke with EZ today and they said that it didnt matter which one a ran to the fan. One is for a relay set up and one is for a toggle switch setup. I ran a jumper wire from the fan power wire directly to the fan and it kicked right on. Something isnt right between the sending unit and/or the relay. Any ideas???

Re: 51' 3100 build in PA New to Site
I'm stunned you got a hold of them, I have the same relay wiring diagram.
Ok, I think your shorter grey wire is showing power because it will power a toggle switch, your longer grey wire has no power because it will get its power from the relay and or from the switch if you hook it up, it can't run hot constantly because it would make your fan stay on (so I assume) that is the point of the relay. Or if you have it wired to the switch it will stay on till you turn the switch off. Also on the diagram the "brown wire" is actually what your long EZ grey wire is going to. As for the sending unit it shouldn't have any power I don't think, it is just basically getting that wire hot that it kicks the relay on and sends power to the fan. Kind of how a gas sending unit doesn't need power it just measures ohms, I think that sending unit wire does the same thing, but for heat. Is this relay for a 185 kick on? Mine is and it kicks on pretty dead on. I can test the power for you if you like, but can't do it till this weekend, but I really don't think that is the issue. I would just cap off the small grey wire and run the long one into the relay as it seems you have done. Make sure your connection on your sending unit is good and that you have a good ground on your fan, which it seems you have done. Make sure your fuse is in right (pretty sure it only goes one way) if anything you could get another fuse and rule that that out for being faulty. report back good luck

Re: 51' 3100 build in PA New to Site
99,
Went to Goodguys in Columbus today. Got back home and was totally motivated. Got my rear wiring section figured out. I got my park, brake and signals all working now. What a relief!!!! Anyway, My father in law came up from ATL for the show. He helped me out with getting the fangoing correctly. He is a awesome mechanic.....works on toyotas and hondas though...no ones perfect!! Anyway he helped me understand how relays work and how to test them. I had it wired correctly, just had one bad connection. Also, I think that I was a little low on coolant so Im not sure if there was enough to register the temp switch. Mine is set for 185 degrees as well. Anyway, he explained to me how the temp switch works with the relay. I totally understand now and could definetly help someone else if they need. Thanks for the assistance though. It really helps to have someone going to the same road using the same products.
