Re: 66 slammed hearse
Well its in and it runs, Need to finish it up and I have a ignition problem to figure out, only wants to run on about 5 cylinders? Any ideas? I am using used cap, rotor and wires because I am broke, that may be the whole problem. I have to build a thottle linkage, no biggie. Also have to fill the tranny up, I made a mess because the converter came out with the engine, The po screwed it up when they installed a junkyard engine that had a standard trans in it, left the pilot bushing in it and forced the converter in, It was stuck hard. The 6 banger is tired, I wasnt sure it was going to make it to the shop today, making some weird noises but run like a top. Anyway, for future referance: V8 and 6 banger frame mounts are the same, no differance at all. Also,a flexplate off a 230 6 banger works on a 283 V8, in case anyone wants to know. I am dog tired, so I will give all the details tomarrow, pics up in a bit tonight. I want to thank Jared, Todd, Mitch, Trins and Brandy for all their help. I have great friends! Jared even beat me to the shop by almost an hour to get started, what a great guy!

Re: 66 slammed hearse
WHOLY CRAP.... Busy with life things and an engine change of my own on the 68 C10 and come back and look what happened. Looks Fantastic!!! Glad that you got it up and rolling. Your going to love it.
My engine change is going on three weeks, but working midnights 5 days a week and only having the weekends to work on it, finally it took it's maden voyage yesterday. Got just a little off idle hesitation. But once that clears it runs like a scalded dog.. 88 350 4 bolt main...030, std rods and mains. cast iron 194's heads (1083) 1969 chevrolet 302 highrise dual plane intake. Only REAL issue is not sure the trans or suspension is going to hold up. Burb looks really good, nice work. Not hop a plane come tune this Damn Edelbrock carb.. Way to rich at idle. Regards.... Re: 66 slammed hearse
Hey Soba, where you been hiding? sounds like you need some metering rods for the edelbroke, thats right I said edelbroke. Mine had a float with a split in it that burped fuel all over the engine. Change the rods as per your elevation, parts store should have the proper rods for your area. Then buy me a plane ticket and I will come tune on it for you. good luck and lets see you a little more often on here, I was starting to get worried.

WOW! I'm gone for a few days and you go and stick two more cylinders in that Burb. Looks good Derric......what's this talk about a big block? That sounds like a LOT of work......probably not really worth the trouble

Well hey your letting my Mtn. Dew get warm! looking good Kid. I heard a rumor that a mutual friend might be going on air and I know you talked about it. I'm trying to empty some of the foreign crap out of the shop so we'd have room for a 3-way bag party!
You coming this way anytime soon? LMK, Josh

Re: 66 slammed hearse
Hey there Rice grinder, I will be stopping by as soon as I can get back up there. I will help kill that MT dew stash. As for the Big Block talk, small change in plans there, No longer a 454, but a 348. I have came across a runner, so as soon as I can get my dirty lil paws on it I will put it on a stand and inspect it, clean it, and fire it to see if it needs to be opened up. As for the 283 I just installed with ALOT of help from my friends (you know who you are), I was able to take the burban for a spin tonite. I must say its a bit differant now, it has enough gitty up to get out its own way now. I had to raid the local parts house for some go-fast goodies I didn't need, Accel coil and wires, MSD coil bracket, Chrome air cleaner, accel points, cap, rotor, plugs and chrome wire looms. If you follow the advice that every piece of chrome is worth 5 hp, I figure I am up about 35 hp over what it was yesterday. I also found out this 283 already has a gear drive timing set in it, can't mistake that sound. Jared, Todd, and myself got it running really good tonite. Its strange that now my powerglide shifts alot better now. Kinda strange because it wasn't changed at all. My brakes are still acting funny and soft, but they stop. Its going on the fall cruize on saturday, maiden voyage and show all in 1, then the fall car show next weekend. More updates as I get more done and more pictures if I ever get to work it the daylight.

that powerglide was supposed to have a fresh rebuild on it, that six must not have had enough juice to get it moving!

Re: 66 slammed hearse
I am going bald over this thing, I started to tie up any loose ends tonite for the cruize tomarrow, the burban is sitting there idling away, when all of the sudden, no oil pressure. The lifters start ticking louder and louder, nothing on the gauge. So I kill it and start checking the simple things, like is there oil in it, yep its full and clean. I fire it back up and it has nothing. I kill it again and then restart it, bam oil pressure. It sits there and runs for a couple minutes and all of the sudden, no oil pressure again. What the hell? Oil pumps either work or they dont right? when it has pressure, its pretty good, right at the first mark at idle and gets higher with throttle. When it has none, it has none, buried on the pin at zero and the lifters start ticking, so I know its not the gauge. Anyone got any idea? I am going to tear into it again in the morning while all my buds go cruize. I am going to start by changing the canister type filter to a spin on style, then drop the oil and see what I can see in it and the pan. I am planning on changing the oil pump unless I find something really obvious in the oil. Who knows what I could find, its the engine out of Drag & Destroy, I'm sure its as trashed as the rest of the truck. Depending the outcome of all this work, I hope to change the intake to a edelbrock torker tomarrow as well.

Re: 66 slammed hearse
I was following a thread on the hamb , talking about fram oil/gas filters, recalls and general bad news. One guy had a diesel fuel filter that just twisted, and compacted wit the pressure of trying to draw fuel.
sucks that this is giving you so much grief, but on the bright side , there is not much more that you have to replace! lets hope for a clogged filter, or maybe there is something in the pan covering the screen on th pump whenthere is pressure/draw... |

Re: 66 slammed hearse
I will try for some pics tonite boyz and girls. Anyone ever heard of of a sudden loss of pressure then its fine? it has to be something with the filter or pickup screen I would think.

Re: 66 slammed hearse
More than likely a blockage...If you do find a bad pump, opt for a High Pressure, NOT a High Volume.

Re: 66 slammed hearse
Yeah what Chief said
high volume can empty your pan and starve your motor of oil.

Re: 66 slammed hearse
I put my truck together w/ a used rebuilt trans that I knew worked; a TH375 from a 73 Caprice. It never worked good w/ the new engine. I changed the carb from a 600 to a 500 last winter and ever since it has worked perfectly! I thought it was a vacuum thing w/ the trans, maybe... still leaks great though.

Re: 66 slammed hearse
Well I think have solved the oil pressure mystery. I belive the canister type filter hasnt been changed for quite awhile. It had alot of sediment in the bottom and was very dirty inside. I got the intake changed out and then did an oil change, and switched to a spin on filter. I am having a hell of a time getting the adapter to seal to the engine, it keeps leaking around the top of the adapter and running all the oil on the ground. I also have a coolant leak at the thermostat housing, but only under throttle. I am going to attack both of these problems in the morning. Now I need some more help. I tried 2 differant and new temp senders and it wont register on the gauge. The only thing I can think of is the engine is not grounded, when the gauge is grounded, it pegs to the hot side so I know the gauge is working. Does this sound right, that the engine is not grounded? Thanks for everyones help.

Re: 66 slammed hearse
I think that's the problem. I am going to run a ground strap from the intake to the body, I will keep ya'all posted on my findings.
