1970 Chevy Longhorn Restoration progress

Tinkering around some more this weekend...I blasted a few more parts. I only blasted the headlight bezels for fun, as I already have a perfect set of black powdercoated ones for my build.

I did two lower fan shroud clips, a Plymouth bracket, and my A/C Heater blower motor. After blasting them, I sprayed them in metal etching primer.

I am an elementary school teacher and I've actually been off work from my regular position since the 8th. However, I am teaching for two of my three weeks off at another site. This will be my last week working during my vacation before I can actually enjoy some time off. But I can see some final bodywork in my near future

Very nice work on the blasting and primering. Also, as usual, nore very nice NOS parts. Hey, who knows. Maybe by the time you get yours painted, I can get my Longhorn running. I can hope right?

As slow as a snail's-pace, but I made more progress. I blasted more small items and got my heater blower motor painted. The first time I blasted it, I did not remove 100% of the original paint from the little nooks. When I painted it, the old paint reacted with the new. So, I re-blasted the motor...thourougly, and repainted it.

I started in on the hood. I need to get more rapid-strip pads for my angle grinder, then finish the nooks and cranys of the hood. I also blasted and etched a batch of bolts

I worked the underside of the hood today. I even took a bit of the tip of my fingenail and finger off with the angle grinder. Don't ask. Anyway, I got as much as is physically possible with the grinder and sandpaper. I'll blast the final corners tomorrow and then get some primer on it.

I finished blasting the corners. I used fine grade walut shells as opposed to sand. I just found out about the silica hazzard of sand. I hope I didn't get too much exposure.

I was blasting outside, with a respirator on, and a blasting hood over that. Hopefully that minimized any deadly exposure to the silica dust. Ugh!

Anyway, I treated the underside of the hood with a rust converter. I'll etch prime it tomorrow.

I been looking thread the last 2 pages and wasn't able to find it, but what are you using the blast this with?

Not the media but the blaster it self... I am debating whether I want to do this my self when the time comes or pay to have it done...

Protect your health from the dangers of sandblasting! Sandblasting with silica sand makes a lot of dust. The really dangerous stuff is so fine you can't see it. Breathing air containing this fine dust can damage your lungs. You must always wear a helmet when sandblasting and there is only one type of helmet that will protect you. The type of helmet you must use is a helmet that is supplied with clear air. The helmet must be a good fit and in good working condition.

A damaged helmet is dangerous. Do not use equipment that has parts missing or damaged.

The helmet must also fit well so that dangerous dusty air does not leak into the helmet while you are working.

The air supplied to your helmet must be clean and free of dangerous dust. To be sure that the air is clean a filter must be fitted in the line between the compressor supplying the air and the helmet.

Your employer is required, by law, to provide you with the forced air full face helmet and the clean air supply to go with it. He is also required to train you how to use it and how to maintain it and keep it clean.

Your employer must check the dust levels in the area where sandblasting is being done.

At least once every three years, your employer is required to provide you with a medical check-up, including an x-ray, to make sure that your lungs are not damaged.

If you are working in a sandblasting area, even if you are only cleaning up, you must also wear a respirator. Remember, THE DANGEROUS DUST IS INVISIBLE. Cleaning up can make the dangerous dust airborne and breathable again. If the job site can be wet down you should we down before starting clean up. The dangerous dust can get into your clothes and can continue to get airborne as you move. Don't try to blow it off with compressed air; this only stirs it up worse. If you can, change into clean clothes before going home.

Do Not Forget!

Invisible dangerous dust is made when sand blasting with silica sand.
You must wear an air supplied helmet when sandblasting.
Your employer knows the equipment and training you require. If you have any doubts or questions ask your boss.
When you use the right equipment and are properly trained in its use and maintenance there will be very little danger to your health from silica dust.

I use a gun similar to this:

It only has a small chamber on the top of the gun, hence, it needs to be refilled often. It's still waaaay better than sandpaper!
I got mine at Harbor Freight for about $30. Don't use sand like I did. There is a risk of contracting silicosis due to the silicon dioxide that is produced from the silica in sand. I'd recommend using glass beads. The walnut shells that I used didn't work too well from rust removal. You'll still need a blasting hood, rubber gloves, and a respirator. I'd also do your blasting outdoors.

It really depends on how much stuff you want to blast on whether you should get a setup, or pay to have it done. The size of the parts is a factor as well. For small parts, what I have works well. Large panels are better off sent out, or using Rapid Strip pads and an angle grinder. I don't know what the cost is to have parts blasted, but it's sure nice to have the convenience of the blaster at home.

Were you using a blasting cabinet or open air? Also, was it indoors, or out...and did you use sand?

Ok, dealing with 30 mile an hour winds, I certainly didn't get much done. I did manage to etch prime the underside of the hood. I took a couple of pictures of the hood, and some other random things around the house

I have a question about your glass media. I have a 6 year old that will be walking where I blast after I'm done. Will the media be like glass slivers and stick in her feet? Also, can you reclaim any of the media?

hood looks great. I know how much a pain it is to sand one of those (especially the inside) to bare metal. Then you get to sand after primer, maybe again if needed, and then you finally get to seal and paint

bolts also turned out great! I love a sandblaster for bolts. Makes them like new and you know they'll fit and thread in easy since they came out...and they are the proper bolts....
