Re: 84 Crew Cab Rebuild

Over rated? Overpriced? Maybe overpriced in Denmark. But over rated? It is the #1 diesel engine. With millions of miles/hours on them.

Totaly over rated. everything is about the cummins, cummins this, cummins that, its a great engine no question about that but there are candidates out there that are just as good as the cummins engine,

That is mighty expensive, you could buy one here and ship it over for $3000USD.

Every diesel shop I have talked to loves the Cummins. 95% of the sled pulling trucks are Cummins powered. One of the most common diesel swap engines is a Cummins, by far.

Basically a Cummins is like a US Marine. It can brag as much as it wants that it is the best at what it does. Because it is.

Big rigs have been running Cummins engines for 40+ years. Big rig engine average 1 million miles before needing a freshening up. The only downside to a Cummins engine is the weight.

call me when theyve been in use for 75 years.... lol, sorry Im a 2 stroke Detroit guy myself, the 5.9s cummins are great motors i guess, heavier than all get out like you said, and way to expensive to work on for my blood, not really a fan of em anyway tho, seems like everyone and their mother has one. I'll take a 6-71T Detroit shoehorned into a pickup over a cummins in a pickup anyday
Im not convinced with the newer ones anyway.

I prefer the 2-stroke DD as well. But it's much easier to put a Cummins in than a DD and much easier to find a Cummins than a DD.

Re: 84 Crew Cab Rebuild

just found this thread and loving it. Keep at it doing a great job keeping this on the road and away from the scrape yard.
A lot of work but it is looking good, my son and myself did a 75 GMC K1500 completely but didn't have much rust as the truck had been oil undercoated its whole life so not much rust and all the fasteners remove easily. We coated all the bolts and nuts with anti-seize so that if and when anything needs to be removed that they back out easy.

Re: 84 Crew Cab Rebuild

Come on, man! No such thing as too loud! My old DD was a Cummins with a 5" straight pipe. Sung a sweet tune! My 6.5 is gonna get the same treatment when it goes in.

I can understand the legal part though... Granted, it is illegal to do it where I'm at as well. Just keep a light foot with the fuzz around!

Actually my 6.5 is a factory N/A. And the turbo on the 5.9 doesn't nearly quiet them down as much as you'd think. It was still louder then the 6.5...
