Re: Structures 65 Chevy C10

At first you had me excited to start replacing panels, but now I'm afraid I'll find more than I can deal with. You're doing a good job, though, keep it up

That's kind of the opposite I was going for. I was hoping to encourage people! I think you can handle it!

Thanks a lot Flips. I like to learn what it's all about. I've got a lot more done on the wiring but I've put that aside until I finish the cab.

Re: Cab Support Bracket

Got a chance to work on the truck the other day. Managed to get my bracket in. Also filled some holes on the floor. I have one more piece patch at the driver's inner rocker and I'll get the cab fully epoxy primer'd and floor undercoated.

Re: Structures 65 Chevy C10

Where are you at with the truck? I'm getting ready to try and replace the R/H and L/H foot wells on my truck and was hoping you could give me some tips on how you replaced yours? I have very similar rot in my truck as yours had, so I'm going to be doing, basically exactly what you've done. Good work by the way and hope to see more progress pics.

Re: Structures 65 Chevy C10

Thanks. I have the drive-train, chassis and suspension together. Just need to start sitting body parts on.

Can't think of many tips other than I have learned it's better to fix what you got rather than try and use the aftermarket. To an extent... I'll know more when I put my fenders on.

Don't cut until you get the aftermarket parts. They may not have everything you need. Also for cutting up sheet metal I tried to keep it as minimal as possible. I supported my cab at the frame attachments and cut as little as possible. I'd recommend before cutting try and support the pillars with rigid reinforcement. There's some guys on here that show good examples of it. Also before you take your doors off the hinges or any hinge removal for that matter (hood too) drill pilot holes for re-locating the doors. I won't be installing my rockers until I get ready to mount the doors. I was doing pretty good on my cab body not moving and tweaking, but this underside work I did (above). Once I cut that back RHS cab mount out (while the truck was on it's back), the B pillar dropped a little. Because of this I won't be welding that lowest flange back until the door is on either.

Re: Structures 65 Chevy C10

Sadly no... I've been side tracked with other projects (built a pontoon boat). But I am close to putting the cab on the chassis (primed). My plan is wrap up the under side of the cab metal work, primer it and undercoat it. Then mount it to the chassis. Now I'm kicking around a couple other projects, particularly a larger shop and also have a little tractor project...

Thanks man. You can do it. I'm just some guy that screws around in the garage.

Your schedule sounds like mine. I've got two tractors to finish, a pontoon to redeck and hopefully build a new shop in the near future, all the while trying to get something done on my truck. Depressing at times.

Re: Structures 65 Chevy C10

I decided since I was just tinkering on the cab, I would go ahead and sit it on the chassis and move on to getting the engine running. Probably have to take some steps backwards, but at least for now I feel like I'm moving forward!

This weekend I sprayed the bottom with undercoating and bolted the cab to the chassis using polyurethane mounts. That undercoat is kind of expensive $10 a can and I used 4 cans (2 coats).

Excuse the mess...

Re: Structures 65 Chevy C10

Guys as always thanks for the comments.

A little progress here. Started putting the front fenders together. Found out putting this back together in primer was a good idea. Since I have a lot of mods ahead of me.

My fenders are "keyparts" they needed some persuasion, but I was happy how I was able to bolt everything together without modification. Some 3 foot clamps did the trick.

Funny, I had a large box of bolts from the tear down. So I wasn't exactly for sure where each bolt went. I took a trip out to my donor truck and luckily was able to take some photos and document which bolts went where.

Right now I'm just tackling some of the smaller needs. Particularly connecting the power steering gear to the pump. I have an o-ring pump and o-ring box. Since I don't have a o-oring flaring tool, I'm thinking I'll try to get my hands on those adapter inserts and using inverted flares with maybe some AN style flex hose. Open to suggestions too. I'm looking at copying TR65's mod somewhat.

Re: Structures 65 Chevy C10

Really making some good progress Robert. I learned it's best to do a full mock up of all your panels even if you're using GM metal. They vary so much it's crazy. I guess the gaps back in the day were a lot more loose than today's cars.
