Re: 56 pro touring build

Still trying to figure out how to mount the bed without using cross sills. Not going to be putting any wood or metal down on the floor of the bed. It will be open. Want to do something different. In addition, may be doing something a little different with the tubs as well.

Any ideas? Want opinions.

Re: 56 pro touring build

It's been awhile since I've looked at this build, and I have to say that it's looking awesome! Nice fab work!

One option on mounting the bed would be to build mounts off of the frame common to the four corners of the bed and use a biscuit-style mount similar to a cab mount. Maybe build some slick 90 degree angle gussets on each corner of the bed with some cool lightening holes in them like you did on your frame. I'm thinking of a similar design when it's time to mount my bed. My air-ride stuff and cantilever arms have taken up all of the area where the original cross-sills used to be, and there's no good way to even try to make the cross-sills work. You have all that awesome chassis work back there, and it would be a real shame to cover it all up!

The work is looking great. Could you give some more details on the rear sway bar?

Re: 56 pro touring build

hotrodrookie:

The bar came from No Limit. I told Rob that I want a truck to handle. Well, he is the guy when it comes to trucks and corners. He set me up with what he found that works for him and his truck.

The swaybar system is a three piece speedway engineering nascar style bar setup. The rear is a 1 1/4 hollow bar with aluminum arms cut about 10 inches. It was a dilemma on where to put it. I would have likes to get it out of the way more and wanted to have longer links (more control and adjustment) but there were too may things in the way (shocks, 4 link, gas tank, etc...). We built the blocks and used bushings from speedway engineering.

Re: 56 pro touring build

hotrod1......you could try triangulating the corners with a shear plate to make the bed rigid, then you could place your mounts alone the bottom edge where they would fit. Just an idea.

Which truck are you wanting to see? I have pictures of all my builds. I just haven't got into the hole daily build posting thing.

Let me know what you're looking for and I will post a picture if I have a good one.

Re: 56 pro touring build

Mounted the panhard bar. For handling you want to put the bar parallel with the bottom half of the axle when looking from behind, and parallel to the axle from the top (optimum but there is a bit of leeway here). Used 3/4 heims with 5/8 adapters. Nice and smooth!

Re: 56 pro touring build

Chevyrestoguy: I sure hope so. If not, wasted a lot of time.

I sure look forward to seeing more of your incredible fab work. I miss it.

We took a look at the bed strips (angle mounted to inside of bed side for bolting down on to wood). Looked OK and not rusty. We are not going to be using it so we decided to remove it. What a surprise. Rust city when taking it off. NO SIGN from the outside. I imaging if you are going to restore one of these things, you will need to remove and replace it even if it look good. By the way, if you have never used one of the harbor freight spot weld removal tools, they are FANTASTIC! Makes a short job out of those pesky spots.

Just another example of how metal can look ok on the outside but is still rusting on the inside. Imagine putting a 5K paint job on that and having it start bubbling thru in a couple of years....
