Re: 58 Fleetside

Well I bought some slam specialties for the front, and didn't like the ride, swapped out for for some regular conveluted bags and am much happier. Got my replacement sheet metal yesterday, getting my alignment on monday. If all goes well I'll be stopping by on the 18th on my way east.

Re: 58 Fleetside

Some bags like the ones you mentioned are made of a much harder rubber wich has a stiffer spring rate. You can tell the difference just by holding the two bags in your hand. Up front you should have about 100 psi and about 60 in the back. That's were mine rides the smoothest. Talk to you soon.

You warned me about the slams, but I thought I could get by with them. My truck seems to like 110-115 up front and 70-75 in back. Still messing with the brake pedal return spring too. How beefy was the original?

Re: 58 Fleetside

Learned an important lesson yesterday. Never open the vents on a 54 y/o truck for the first time on the freeway...

Re: 58 Fleetside

Been driving her for 6 days. I head east tomorrow. This is what she looks like, minus the welder. Still need to get the brake pedal return spring right. Later fellas. TJ

Re: 58 Fleetside

I just brought home a 1958 feeltside short box today and hope to start working on it later on this fall. I will be reading every word of this thread before I start. Your truck turned out fantastic.

Thanks, I appreciate the kind words. I've been off this site since I left California for school in April. I drove her cross country, up into Canada to see a friend and down too Rhode Island with no problems. In fact the twisties were fun as hell from Utah through Colorado with the no limit kit, truck handles like a slot car. After about two weeks in Rhode Island the air tank blew but I found a welder right outside the base gate. Had to get a few guys to left the bed off in a parking lot, and towing isn't easy when your siting on the ground. Now were in Virginia and still going strong, although I wish I had put A/C in her. It was also a cold ride in April so a heater would help too. I rolled about 90 mph most the time and got about 15 mpg with the stellar aerodynamics of the 58. Truck got lots of attention, especially from German tourists in Utah, and in the Bronx when my gps thought I should take surface streets through New York.
