Re: Project -underfunded - '68 shortstep/carb'd LSx/200-4r build

Installed all the new steering parts (Inner/outer tie rods, adjusters - others where almost new) today. I also drilled holes for the brackets and installed the Trick Flow pre-filter and A/C (Carter) fuel pump, and the regulator to carb -8AN S.S. line with Russell inline filter. Now I have a better idea of what I need in the way of AN fittings to complete the fuel system. My -8AN S.S. hose and 1/2" hard line came with with red/blue fittings and I had black on the truck...so I'll be ordering some more black AN fittings and a little more -8AN S.S. hose...as well as a few more odds and ends. Getting ready to start on the electrical...which means at some point...putting the radiator support back on.

Pics to follow tomorrow............too tired.

Re: Project -underfunded - '68 shortstep/carb'd LSx/200-4r build

I am also thinking of installin my fuel system this week end. I Think i have gotten too small of hose. I got -6 that says good to 375 hp on a site i read. Also think my pump is too small at 105 gph. Cant wait to see pics.

Re: Project -underfunded - '68 shortstep/carb'd LSx/200-4r build

I also think my pump is too small. I was buying a bunch of genuine GM A/C Delco parts and thru in A/C Delco's street pump. Sitting next to the nice Trick Flow canister filter...it looks homely.

I think I may use it to get it going then replace it.

I know yall like lots of pics so here yo go!

New 3.5" .083 wall DOM steel Driveshaft is in. Still need to center up the rear. The shaft fits thru the CPP crossmember well, at roughly 80% weight/assembled?

-8AN Russell "post" filter, fittings, and -8 AN S.S. hose:

Steering is finally in with new Moog components. The outer tie rods have a bend in them that the originals didn't?

And tho I'm running a carb'd LSx......my technolgy upgrades (1 of 2)...

Ordering more plumbing and diggin in to the wiring....might start to install the 3" exhaust. I've missed SO many deadlines...but this thing WILL be running before Christmas...maybe even next weekend!

Re: Project -underfunded - '68 shortstep/carb'd LSx/200-4r build

got some more done...need to take pics tho. Yes...I thought that pump was the 100gph model...but I think I wound up with the 72gph model. I'm planning on having to take it a bit easy in the beginning to limit parts breakage until I can afford to install a bulletproof trans, rear end, and driveshaft.

I thought your trans was built for that power?

Re: Project -underfunded - '68 shortstep/carb'd LSx/200-4r build

Oh it is....and it should be fine....but its not a "race built 900hp rated TCI" or "2000hp API Big Brute" or something along that lines.

But really....if the rear is not replaced with a built Moser or Strange...it will get upgraded with bigger axles, c-clip eliminators, etc. and both slip yoke and pinion yoke upgrade to forged pieces and 1350 u-joints...along with possibly an even bigger drive shaft. Then the weak link is just the trans...and it will also be upgraded at some point. Heck.....I still want to pull out my front suspension and steering I just put in and put in a $2500-$3500 (or more) coilover/rack and pinion steer IFS!

Looking great! Your build is so clean! That AEM Air/Fuel Ratio gauge is the same one I'm bout to install in my truck except mine has the digital readout unfortunately.

You mean there's no posi/locker in your 4x4 subs rear? If not....you gonna add one with the new found power when you do the swap? As far as why I'll be beefing it up the rest of the drivetrain...remember I plan to race my truck.

Thanks! I wanted everything to be new...so the motor and accessory drive are all brand new and not from a salvage vehicle. Of course the GMPP intake, carb, etc. are also new. When AEM came out with the analog display UEGO A/F gauge I knew I had to have one....or two! Two will help me really dial it in...and hopefully keep from blowing it up!

I know, I've spoken with him about what I want....and the ones I'm thinking of bolt in (I think one welds in) and don't require notching the frame for the rack and pinion steering.

If there is a posi of some kind it sure does not work. I will add a posi when i upgrade to a 14 bolt full floater down the line.....my end up being a very short line...

our TBSS has a 14 bolt with 4.10 posi. Its a semi floater though I think...the 9.5" version.

Re: Project -underfunded - '68 shortstep/carb'd LSx/200-4r build

going to have to cut down the front sway bar links...not enough cornering clearance. you can see how short they are already in the 2nd pic. I'll be taking 1/2" to 3/4" off...

swapped out the rubber for a S.S. hose from filter to pump. still thinking I'll change the pump.

also added one for the booster...doesn't fit too well tho.

Re: Project -underfunded - '68 shortstep/carb'd LSx/200-4r build

thanks guys. made some more online purchases....everything (hose, fittings, etc) to finish the fuel system, Lokar throttle cable and bracket, Autometer Designer Black series oil, temp, and volt gauges and senders/adapters; plus hardware for trans lines. Doesn't sound like well over $400 does it?
Thats everything but brake lines, and a floor shifter or other solution (column shift).

Thanks. I got a new trans crossmember yesterday that I'm getting ready to try out....so I can run the 3" exhaust inside the frame.

Re: Project -underfunded - '68 shortstep/carb'd LSx/200-4r build

its funny.....until you really get under there and plan a system "within" the frame rails with long tube headers that hang slightly lower....

I had planned on the mufflers being before the trailing arm crossmember, along with an x-pipe ahead of it. Now it will be an h-pipe with the mufflers after the TA crossmember.
