Re: My 1958 Fleetside project

The saga continues:
Got her started right up but had a very high idle, after playing with all the lines and gaskets found out that my carburetor needs to be replaced also. I ordered it yesterday and it should be in tomorrow.
I did however get my buddy to hold the throttle closed hard enough to get it to idle correctly so I could set the timing. I am hoping to DRiVE it home this weekend.. WooHoo
Will keep you all updated as things progress, or as the days have gone so far: what I need to replace or fix AGAIN

Re: My 1958 Fleetside project

The new Holley carburetor came in and I installed it. I got it fired up and she ran beautifully.
I took her out for a spin in the parking lot and found that she is running GREAT. I am going to try and drive her home today and see what happens.

Re: My 1958 Fleetside project

Thank you Kim, I drove it home and had a couple small things like temperature getting to 200 on the initial drive. I have had it put a couple times and it does great if I keep it under 40mph. Found that when I pull up to a signal light it cools down good, the culprit has to be the fan shroud. Going to try a couple things with it too see if they work. I am also going to change the thermostat to a 160-165 instead of the 180 that it has, as the fan thermostat is a 185.
Other than that issue she drive great, has lots of get up and go with this 327 and trans combo. Now I just have too color sand and buff the hood and install it and I am good to go for a bit.

Re: My 1958 Fleetside project

I had the same temp issues with mine on initial drives. It was solved by swapping the 16" electric fan out for a shrouded 18" and adding some water wetter to my cooling system. Runs at 195 consistently on hot days now

Thanks Dubie, I have water wetter I just forgot to put it in the radiator
I haven't taken the truck out today to try it but I will put the water wetter now and take it for a drive tomorrow After work.
I did manage to color sand and buff the hood today, and painted the old hood hinges and also found the springs so tomorrow I will drive her down and install the hood if I can get some help from a couple buddies.

Re: My 1958 Fleetside project

200* is nothing, your antifreeze should be good for 240* and a 14lb cap should keep it in.
truk does have an 18'' shrouded electric fan, never gets over 200* on 100 degree days
by turning the ac on it keeps the fan on and the temp drops to 180*

Not to sidetrack this thread, but since it's been mentioned, does that water wetter actually help?

I am not sure I will use it now. I read some good and not so good reviews about it, and the fact that some people mention a sludge or something of the like. I think I will just use good old fashioned 50/50 water and anti freeze and try to resolve my problem that way. Several friends have mentioned changing g the thermostat to a 160• instead of the 180• or 190• that I currently have in there.

Sometimes it doesn't pay to read a lot.

On another note, I finally got my hood mounted onto the truck today and wired in some switches to control the fan and air compressor.

Nothing much to report except I started to clean up my wiring a little better. Also layer out the seat belts for install this weekend.

Re: My 1958 Fleetside project

Well, still chasing the heating issue, so far I have replaced the thermostat too a 160 degree. I guess next I will be pulling the fan shroud and trying it that way. I will post the results as things go on.

Re: My 1958 Fleetside project

I spent Saturday switching out the radiator. I went to a radiator shop owned by a fiend of the family and he told me my radiator was under sized so I bought a larger aluminum one and spent the day replacing it.
Now the truck runs at 170-175 in city traffic at about 100 outside temp. Wow what a difference it made. I still have to get my power steering hose replaced as it now sits under the radiator. Once that is replaced the radiator can be dropped another 2-1/2" which will also help it run cooler due to it being centered in the opening. Will update as things go on, now to start my wife's project of shortening the longbed frame to a short bed and then installing the 87 C4 suspension.

Truck is looking great man. I have been away for awhile and you have made great progress. The use of the C-10 frame worked out well. I am really encouraged about using mine now. Question? What headers are you using? Where did you purchase and style? Keep the pics coming.

Thank you, I used a set for I think was a Monte Carlo, I got it from summit. I can try to find the part number if you'd like. I lowered my engine down into the engine compartment so my air cleaner would clear the hood cross bars. The engines on a C10 sit up high inherently when using the clip on a 55-59.

Re: My 1958 Fleetside project

And here are a couple I took sunday with my hood color sanded and buffed and all cleaned up. Still need to install the bed wood though, I had to send it too a wood finisher as I couldn't figure out why it had very tiny pin holes or bubbles in the finish.

Been trying to drive it around town alot to get all the little quirks out of her before I hit the freeway, I don't wanna find out the hardway that there is a problem, as I hate being stuck on the side of the road.
My wife and I took the truck out for a bit on friday evening to cruise around then went to dinner. it was fun as we haven't done that in the truck for about 16 yrs. lol.
