Congratulations sir,
I know how it feels to have the total freedom to start rebuilding your life.
Which is an on going conversation I am having right now with my oldest friend, as she winds her way down this very same path.

Spring must be in the air....

LOL

Hope you get settled and back to feeding us picture and progress whor...woah ~trolls~ I mean.

Re: '60 GMC 4x4 Long Fenderside

Thanks McMurphy!

Freedom is what I have been waiting for since June!

Hoping to get some garage time in this weekend. The monster trucks are in town on Saturday, so the kids and I are going to go hang out in the pits, then watch some mayhem. Sunday should be grease and grime all day hopefully!

Re: '60 GMC 4x4 Long Fenderside

My daughter wanted to help a couple of weekends ago. We mounted the fuel pump, and spent some time scraping crap off.

My son was able to sit up in the engine compartment. How many newer rigs can you do this in? He was just cleaning off some of the grease and grime up there.

Last Sunday we got the carb on, bent the fuel line from the pump to the carb, and put on new hoses to the heater core. That lower hose was fun! I didn't realize that it would drain the block when we opened it. Five gallons later, and a lot of antifreeze all over everything, it finally stopped running out.

Re: '60 GMC 4x4 Long Fenderside

A couple of questions for you all.

The truck had this engine heater in it. Is this something I should try to retain, or would it not be worth it?

It says:

Kat's Engine Heater
Model K-9 850W/120V
To Water Pump ->
Five Star Manufacturing
Clarksdale, Miss

Name: DSCN1250 (Small).jpg
Views: 592
Size: 57.8 KB

Also, where would this black wire go to? It is not attached, and I can't find anything in the manual that says where it goes. It appears to go to the one on the left, but am not sure.

Re: '60 GMC 4x4 Long Fenderside

Great to have the kids involved isn't it?

That engine heater is made here:

http://fivestarmanufacturing.com/Kat_s

it's worth about 10 bux here:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/vintage-engi...46e803&vxp=mtr

and is supposed to make your engine start easier if you plug it into the house before you fire it up on cold days, sorta like a diesel engine warmer.

I'd toss it but I'm in OK where it's 80 degrees in the winter (just about anyway!)

Re: '60 GMC 4x4 Long Fenderside

Once you get most of the built up grease off oven cleaner will be your best friend, just stay clear of the fumes.

Does your truck have a tach because that kinda looks like factory tach filter on the wire.

Re: '60 GMC 4x4 Long Fenderside

Thanks for the info FetchMeAPepsi!

Yes it is good to have the kids involved. My son has been frothing at the mouth to work on it through the whole divorce, so is now quite excited to be able to get in there and do something.

1985-GMC, i have heard that about the oven cleaner, so I will have to give that a try! Nope, no tach, although I wish it did!!

I am hoping to at least try to start it tomorrow, or next weekend. I want to make sure my son is here for its trial run.

All early engine had a condenser on coil. You can take it off if you want.

Re: '60 GMC 4x4 Long Fenderside

One lil' thing - the condenser on coil was to cut down on buzz in the radio so if you find you have a buzzer afterward just put it back on and it should cut it down a fair bit.

Re: '60 GMC 4x4 Long Fenderside

I have a pertronix in there now, will that still buzz?

If I just leave it in, does it matter which side of the coil the wire is on?

Re: '60 GMC 4x4 Long Fenderside

If...when it runs, I will post a video! I'll have to figure out how to do it, but it'll get on here.

Another site member (Murdoc) is coming over tomorrow, and him, my son, and myself are going to attack it. That way we can go 3 different directions.

HOPEFULLY we'll be able to try to start it tomorrow!

Re: '60 GMC 4x4 Long Fenderside

The Pertronixs should not cause any electrical feed back that will be picked up by your radio. Especially if you have the radio direct wired off your battery.
That is the set up I have on my Tempest and I have zero problems with it.

Your engine water heater....
Unless you are running manual choke, unless you are living in an area that drops to around 0 degrees on days you are going to drive it, then I would just toss it.
On the up side, your engine does get to temperature faster with it, and where that is really nice is it is sooner that you can kick the heater on!

Not that I am an expert, but as I write this, there is still 4 feet of snow on the ground and the high today is around 20 degrees.....

Freekin awesome that the kids are into it, though the daughter looks to be having more fun than the son is...

Re: '60 GMC 4x4 Long Fenderside

She lives again...well sort of!

Murdoc, AmmoSS, my son Chevyman10, and I hit it today, and got it to start. Couple of good fireballs, turning the distributer 180 degrees, a small fire on the intake, and a mostly dead battery, and she started. It will stay running...as long as someone keeps pouring gas down the carb. LOL

My guess is a bad fuel pump. It doesn't seem to have enough to pull the fuel that far, and shove it up to the carb. Any suggestions?

Here is a video...if it works!

We also got the heater core mostly back in, did a compression test, put on the spin on oil filter adapter, and worked on the clutch.

The clutch slave would not work. It was taken off, cleaned out, hit with air pressure, pried on, let soak with liquid wrench, everything we could think of, but couldn't get it to move at all. There is no pedal at all. We bled it out, got some air out, but still nothing. Any ideas?

The compression test came out pretty good. One cylinder is low, but workable for now I think.
