Re: 66 SB Step Side- Ex Air Force Base Truck

Thanks for the info Ta2Don, very useful to know.

I've found that the positive battery terminal clamp has split on my truck so that will of contributed to me electrical/starter issues. Better get down to the local motor factors and get myself a replacement clip to bolt or solder on. Luckily my better half also bought me a soldering kit as well as tattooing me for my birthday!

Re: 66 SB Step Side- Ex Air Force Base Truck

I see the Army trucks here all the time living 5min off Ft. Bragg. So familiar with those. Pope AFB was closed out a while back and is now an Army Airfield, so mostly Army & Marine vehicles we see here. Alot of Marine training from Camp Lejune. They just got done with the 155mm training for a few weeks so I can hang all my stuff back on the walls.

Thanks to all for the military deciphering and hope Neatbeard didn't mind us turning this into a topic on his build.

No not all guys, I find information like this great and it's still relevant to my truck with it being ex USAF.

Thanks again guys.

Not really fella, just been driving it and trying to sort the phantom no-start issue. I thought I had it sussed after fitting a brand new starter and then finding that my positive battery terminal clamp had split in two, so I replaced that as well. Truck was starting and running fine every time I tried it.

Took it 150 miles to a 3 day car show, stopped half way for fuel top up and it wouldn't start, my mates pushed it so I could bump it and it started fine with a push. Parked it on a slight hill at the event incase it needed bumping again but it then started up twice fine..... the only common theme seems to an issue starting when hot. I thought it was only a common issue with the V8s though and mine is an inline6.....?

Re: 66 SB Step Side- Ex Air Force Base Truck

It looks like I may of sold the truck...... i've been thinking long and hard about whether to or not as I love it but with our new addition to the family I need something that can seat all of 5 of us when going to cars shows etc.

That said I do have my eye on a 51 GMC suburban that would certainly fulfill those requirements.......

Re: 66 SB Step Side- Ex Air Force Base Truck

Thought I'd just update this thread about the life and times of chevy C10 1966 ex USAF truck.
A massive thank you to Neatbeard who sold me this truck and has been a excellent custodian of her since she came to the UK.
It's true if your wondering,? Neat beard does have a very neat and very big beard!,

I've had the truck less than a week and I'm so excited, I keep looking out of the window of my house ( not only to see if it's still there :h ) but I can't believe its mine. This old Chevy puts a smile on my face everytime!

Like the previous owner I have been into classic VW's from a young age, I had beetles, type 3, campers etc and have learnt my spannering skills on those. Always wanted American iron and since touring California a few months back and seeing all the classics there I just had to go for it..... Life's to short and last time I heard you only get one?

So now I'm a newbie chevy truck owner and in at the deep end it feels like I don't know my arse from my elbow, but I love learning new skills so am enjoying staying up late reading, looking and doing everything C10!!
My plans for the truck are not much, I want to add power steering as driving her around London Town is a bit whaayyy, whaoooo, arrrghhhh! and a complete work out!, and don't get me started about parking!
Other plans for later on (when I've saved enough cash) is dropped spindles and disk conversion.
Other than that she's staying as she is.
I was out putting on some wax to protect from all the rain we are currently having and I could see people faces when they walked past thinking " WTF are you doing polishing that knarly kncackered truck" then you explain the history of the truck and there like ok cool, I get ya!

Any how off to work!, later D

Re: 66 SB Step Side- Ex Air Force Base Truck

Grizz,

Thanks for the welcome!,

Yeah mine will be a deffo works truck too! I'm in the construction industry so wanted one for 3 reasons really

1. Because I just really really wanted one ( new challenge and all that)
2. It's a c10 truck and stands out from anything else, great for advertising my company
3 . It's a c10 truck so good for moving stuff about
4 . It's a C10 truck
5. It's a c10 truck and Ive just hot this thing about talking to complete strangers anywhere you park it. ( this happened often with my VW type 3 fastback) but with this truck so far it's been every time.
6. Did I mention it's a C10 truck......

But in reality reasons 2 -6 are I'm only trying to justify reason number 1

Whooo hooooo

Your reasons were all the same as mine. Except I never did anything about it till my wife told me to stop talking about it and to get the truck.

I had a '63, '59 Beetle and a 69 Bay panel years ago. Loved them then and still on VZi.

My alltime dream was a Notch back though. So we do seem to have similar tastes.

Hi Grizz,

Thank you & A happy new year to you too!!

Truck and me are doing ok, basically been buying up lots of parts when Ive saved the cash and stuff needed to do some serious jobs on the truck, not quite as in depth as your resto is turning out but the whole front end is being changed over for new etc etc

Just had too much work on last year, I did promise myself a couple of weeks off to do the truck but it never happened, hopefully this year. It's difficult doing it on the side of the road in central London...
Need a garage.......

I've been on here a watching but just not logged in....

All the best

You are working against the worst odds in the UK.

No off street parking, no garage etc. I am so fortunate that Nicola found our garage with a house to go with it.

Anyway, no idea where in London you live, but on Retro Rides, there is a section on "Garage Communities" click this link http://retrorides.proboards.com/boar...ge-communities

Maybe there is one near you where you can su hire some space.

I know one is known as "The Bunker" or something like that, and it is a basement in a large office block, completely used as a multi user garage.

Look at Seth's build threads I think he has space there.

http://retrorides.proboards.com/thre...rd-floor-begun

http://retrorides.proboards.com/thre...la-combi-parts

Hope that helps.

Re: 66 SB Step Side- Ex Air Force Base Truck

Thought i would post a periodical update of How she looks today - Well the other day at the NRSA swap meet . saw a few C10's 60-66.

We've done a lot in the last year -
Wilwood disc conversion w/o power brake - dual master upgrade.
Added Power steering box-pump-etc
Brand new A-arms top and bottom, after 1 lower ball joint pulled through the Lower A -arm when i was reverse parking ready for the MOT.
(the upper ball joint was held in with 1 bolt!)
Moog ball joints - tie rods inner\outer - steering idler arm.
All 4 corners now on independent air - instead of front n back.
Interior change from Red to Gold -
Mexi blanket seat gone now Navy -
Roof rack quick fab for work use but i think it suit there truck.
Service and tune the inline 6 250.
Headlight relay upgrades
Washer pump- the F'in washer pump..... will sort that once i wrote a "how to"
Welded up the hole in the front fender and the scabs on the doors with fresh metal.
Lots of rewiring - gauges added and plenty of little bits , when i have had the time.
All done on the side of the Road outside my house - yep my neighbours LOVE me, and the council just haven't caught me...

thanks for looking

DH

Fella!!

Didn't know you were still on here, i did a little search on your thread a while back - What did you end up getting?? Dodge?

SOoooooo...

Well i got so busy building a House or two since i got her and it kind of wiped me out so i thought id get some time off once the builds had finished - in the meantime I've been saving money and getting all the parts collected/shipped etc and trying to do a little when i can - but i decided the life is too short so took 2 months off to do" Truck stuff"

The stance is good but I'm not quite happy - took your thoughts and got dropped spindles on the front - i have got C- notches in the lock up - but not installed. I think it will be far too low out back and then i have to start with the front again.

Wheels are a temp measure as Smoothies didn't fit back on with the new discs. 18" low profile to try and keep it low.
undecided on what wheels to put on her i keep seeing one i like...

would like to put e-level kit on it, maybe after the next house build!!

post up a pic of your new motor

D

I don't get on here much anymore but I got an email notification that someone had replied to my thread so I had to see what was going on!! Regarding wheels, yeah the current ones look good but not really in keeping with the truck methinks..... i'd go for a set of oversize steelies painted in white to match the bumpers, roof and grill....

Yup I ended up getting a '68 Dodge A108, totally rebuilt by an old hot rodder guy in the States, brand new 5.2Ltr V8, brand new gearbox, brand new exhaust, brand new rad, all new fittings, fixings and pipes, converted to vented n grooved discs up front, pearl yellow paint job that glows in the sun (too nice for me really!), he re-did the interior in a hippy theme that I have stripped out. I have had a bespoke, full-width RnR bed fitted in the back with 3x new modern belts for the kids. Interior is this years plan, we're going for a mexi day of the dead theme!

Sorry to hijack! Heres a couple of pix:
