Re: 1968 redo

Trying to get it started. Not getting fire from new coil. We are trying to run it down, spent the entire day yesterday doing that. I was hoping to get it going, so we could move on to painting doors and exterior of cab today, then all that would be left is the bed. I have a bed lift and stand for it. Planning a spraying bedliner inside bed. The tailgate needs some work before it is painted, but it is doable. It’s not in bad shape, it’s just that heavy gauge steel that will take a little extra coaxing.
I tore up my shoulder and am having a shoulder replacement in 3 weeks. This has significantly slowed the project down as I am down an arm.

I posted a thread on the main forum about my coil problems for suggestions and criticism. Any help is appreciated.

Re: 1968 redo

Little by little. We adjusted timing today and the distributor would not turn enough to get it in time. The distributor was hitting those ribbed pushrod covers. Had to remove distributor and grind some of those ribs down to allow for clearance. Got it fixed.
Paid for my monojet rebuild at a carb shop, after warming up to operating temp , gas is pouring out of the bottom of carb after it runs for a bit. I assume it is the float sticking because I can tap it with a screwdriver handle and it stops.
Installed a new alternator and the belt is loose. I’m using the original belt. Wondering if the pulley on my old alternator was bigger. It turns and charges, but needs to be tighter. Probably will modify the bracket to add length.

Re: 1968 redo

I adjusted float down to 1/4 inch in the bowl, also noticed a little t of debris getting through the filter in the carb. Cleaned the bowl, needle and needle housing out, also disconnected the pump to carb fuel line and gave it a good cleaning. Hooked everything back up and it started missing, but no leak. It even missed at high idle. Today it fired up without the miss, no leak, timing going, water temp good, oil pressure good. I guess the air in the fuel line may have caused the miss until it bled out.

Ready to make ve on to next step.

Re: 1968 redo

You ruined a nice, ribbed lifter cover by grinding on it?? All you had to do was remove the distributor and re-clock it a tooth or two.. As for the dripping, leaking carburetor, you probably have trash in the tank, fuel pump, and fuel lines.. Clean out everything, re-set the float level, and install a quality (not one of those clear glass or plastic) filter between the tank and fuel pump.

Re: 1968 redo

Yes, it looks terrible. Did not know re-clocking it was an option. Here is a pic.

Re: 1968 redo

You need to plug that vacuum port on the intake also. Huge vacuum leak

Re: 1968 redo

I have PCV valve on that now.
I have the vacuum advance hose connected to the vac port on the carb just above that. Vacuum advance is not working. I have vacuum from that port. I pulled vacuum advance of and it moves, but is very stiff, so I ordered a new one.

Had to extend alternator bracket this far. I’ll be looking for a longer bracket.

Re: 1968 redo

We replace vacuum advance today and that is the end of the timing not advancing as it should problem..
Started sanding cab looking for hail damage and began the tedious task of removing all of the caulk out of drip rail. I had stated that it was very rusted in a previous post, come to find out the caulk was seriously buckled in the drip rail an I thought I could see rust under it.
Turned out to be primer not
rust. Got it removed and applied a rust inhibitor to the shiny rail followed by a seam sealer. Don’t see any hail damage, but we gonna mist it black and block it down to check for dings.

I fell the other day and tore up my shoulder, shoulder replacement today. Stay tuned, gonna be a bit before I can work some more.
