Re: Randy & Jakes 64 4x4 SLOW build

Thanks GUYS, I had to order an oem rear cab mount, the one I had was slip on and it didn't fit worth a hoot. Ordered that and a couple of stickers one for the valve cover High Torque 292. The driver side cab corner is really not that bad just a couple of pin holes and the rear mount is solid so that side will be an easy fix. Hopefully tomorrow when I get off work I can help a gentlemen pull an engine for that mount I needed... After I get these corners knocked out I can go back and tidy up the rockers and some pinholes and some drilled out holes that PO just screwed sheet metal over the rust... I have to address some small holes on passenger side above windshield and some on inside of passenger side roof area above door, Then all that's left will be the doors as far as rust, which need bottoms and lower outers replaced, that oughta be fun.... I forgot about the front end need inner fenders and fenders, sounds like I need a whole new truck. Guess what I will be when I get done. can't wait cause I'm gonna drive the wheels off it... It's gonna be my daily driver....

Re: Randy & Jakes 64 4x4 SLOW build

You running a stock cam? You know what would be cool...is to get a custom ground cam to stock specs and have the lobe separation changed...from the stock 114 to 110....make it sound a little crazier...then change to headers and dual exhaust...then it sound like a small block! LOL!

Re: Randy & Jakes 64 4x4 SLOW build

Yea afraid so T.J. If money wasn't sooooooooo tight then I would consider some of those options. Right now just trying to get it going as I still have lots to do just about need a whole new front end except hood. Yesterday when I got that new battery I tried to start it
in gear which is a bad thing cause I was standing in front of the front tire and when I cranked it over with a screw driver and it tried to run me over, thankfully it was out of gas and didn't start or could have been bad.. Always make sure double check to see if it's out of gear.... Had to buy me another grinder the other one finally bit the dust,, got to buy a gear/pulley puller, went to go see a guy about some front tow hooks but he wasn't home.. need more tools. Argh, Argh, Argh....

Argh!!! Kimble you didn't have to say that, But guess that metal had to go somewhere..
I got the new cam and lifters in now. I just have to clean up and paint the timing cover and the balancer and install. Get everything adjusted and fire it up.

Re: Randy & Jakes 64 4x4 SLOW build

Nah you're fine. Coming off the cam and lifters the oil is either going over the valves or splashing back into the pan where its getting pumped and filtered. Dont worry about it. Juat drive it.

Randy--at least break in the cam correctly and use a break in additive. oil is not what it use to be.

Re: Randy & Jakes 64 4x4 SLOW build

I used an assembly lube it's red in color and very sticky and I also dipped my lifters in oil b4 dropping them in and them poured more oil on top of them. But now it's raining here now and supposed to rain tomorrow so Don't know if I'll get to work on it..Rats, Rats, Rats
I did bake my timing gear @ 400 for 30 min, and drove it on with a piece of wood and hammer... as far as breaking in the cam, what does that really mean...

Re: Randy & Jakes 64 4x4 SLOW build

You are supposed to run at a couple different RPMs for ashort sustained period of time. There are usually instructions with the cam and lifters.

Re: Randy & Jakes 64 4x4 SLOW build

Instructions what's that LOL..... I do believe I remember seeing something in the box, I
will have a look see.. Despite the cam being worn the engine is very clean inside there's
no gum or sludge build up whatsoever...

2,000 rpm for 15 to 20 minutes with good break in oil. lol And a couple fans...preferably in the evening or cooler part of the day. That's the break in for a rebuilt engine anyhow...which includes the cam break in.

Re: Randy & Jakes 64 4x4 SLOW build

some say to vary the rpm's 1500-2000 for at least 20 minutes and put this zzdp in your oil.

the break in is a must. all the pros say this. ran my new crate eng for 20m with break in oil. the cam basically gets oiled by splash-why the 2000rpm while break-in.

Re: Randy & Jakes 64 4x4 SLOW build

Woo-Hoo she lives and runs again let her run for a good 15 min. she's oiling good and good oil pressure.. glad to get this part done, this was my first cam change and it went pretty good with YALLS help and books and youtube and google, and some general knowledge and some common sense... It rained all day last Sunday so I didn't get to get that motor bracket I needed so I can get rid of that Hammer LOL.. still on the hunt for powersteering Brackets. I got to make some calls I got a couple of leads, so there is still hope.... Once I get that done then it's back on sheetmetal... Slowly but surely you know Rome wasn't built in a day as they say..........
