Re: Project 6 Point Oh

I used oven cleaner, SOS pads, and a wire wheel to clean the transmission. Then painted it.

Re: Project 6 Point Oh

I cleaned the motor and masked it off. I bought the POR 15 Chevy orange motor paint kit and a paint gun. I thought it might look better sprayed rather than brushed on. The kit comes with a primer to put on before the orange top coat. The best that I could tell from the can of primer, was that it was just plain old semi gloss POR 15. The primer went on well with a 1.8 tip and 30 psi.

Re: Project 6 Point Oh

The instructions of the paint kit said to let primer dry until there was a slight drag with your finger. So after about 5 hours it was ready for the orange top coat. And here is where things went wrong. It was splattering paint out of the gun. Also I should probably say that this is the first thing that I've ever shot with a paint gun. I was using the same air pressure and same settings on the gun as I did with the primer, but the orange paint was thicker than the black primer and I think this is why it was splattering. So with no painting experience, I played with the air pressure and paint gun settings, but it was still not going to work. Then I remembered the instructions said that the orange paint could be thinned up to 20% with the thinner supplied in the kit. The primer was drying fast, so I quickly (rough guessing at amounts) mixed the 20% and tried it again. It flowed ok ,and as I shot it the paint started running, and I could still see black primer shining through the orange. I was so aggravated and disgusted. I was out of paint, it wasn't covering, and the primer was running like a Kenyan at a track meet. I grabbed a sponge brush and tried to knock down the runs the best that I could. I ordered more orange paint and asked for advice on the Paint Forum of this sight.

It's hard to see in the picture but you can see some runs and sags on the timing cover.

Re: Project 6 Point Oh

Blasted the TBSS manifolds and smoothed them with a carbide burr. I was going to have them Jet Hot coated but I saw where people have had good results with POR 15 High Temp paint. Two coats with a brush and then 350 degrees for an hour. They look great right now, but only time will tell.

I didn't even notice she was in the background LMAO, she looks guilty as heck.
I wish that I could blame it on her, but I was putting the last coat of paint on it when the coat hanger straightened out and it fell.

Re: Project 6 Point Oh

I was scrolling down looking at your pictures, and I think I woke my Wife up when I started laughing. The first picture was of the newly painted caliper hanging to dry, then the second was the same caliper covered in grass and twigs. What made laugh was the look on the dog's face ! That's just priceless ! I'm sorry for your mishap, but in a sick way it gave me a good chuckle.
I hope you got it cleaned off and resprayed with no issues.
Again, sorry for your misfortune, but that was too damn funny.

When it fell, I picked it up and said a few choice words, then I laughed and thought "I need a picture of this".

Re: Project 6 Point Oh

OK, hemi picked my interest and I scrolled back to see your SNAFU. Also, got a chuckle at the dog, like WTF?

Any way, just wanted to ask where you got the rotors, my one side has the groove in it, but the other side doesn't, getting ready to tackle the front brakes! I'll make sure to use a stronger coat hanger...

Nice work on your truck, always enjoy seeing guys going to great lengths of detail, you fit rite in... keep up the quality restore

Believe it or not, I think that these are the factory rotors. The originals all had that groove. I've had to replace nearly every single thing during this build, so I was thrilled when I didn't have to buy 2 new rotors LOL

Note to myself;
Don't use plastic coat hangers when painting calipers.

Wire coat hangers ain't what they used to be. I'm going to have to use some of my brass brazing rods next time lol

Re: Project 6 Point Oh

I couldn't get the threads clean enough on the tie rod tube, so I got out my 12 gage shotgun cleaning brush and short rod. Then put them in my drill and cleaned the threads good. Then I put some silver anti seize in it and now I can adjust the sleeve with one hand. I kind of got obsessed with sandblasting, cleaning, and painting the tube and clamps, (I spent a whole day on it) but it looks great.

Re: Project 6 Point Oh

Awesome work. You and I are both at identical stages in our build. you may be a week ahead of me but the cold weather keeps slowing my painting down. Cant keep the shop warm enough when its 10 or 15 degrees outside. The caliper paint mishap is the funniest sh** I have seen in awhile. I lmao and no one else around me understood why it was so funny.

Very few people know how to do what we (the members of this group) do, and what we go through to get great results. So when a gear head sees my grassy caliper, he laughs his butt off. But the average person wouldn't see the humor in it. It seems as time goes by, there are fewer of us lol.

I can't stand the way these coil brackets look, so more blasting and POR 15.

As long as I have my paint gun out and POR 15, I might as well get some more stuff painted.

Re: Project 6 Point Oh

Low mount A/C bracket looks good but the lines will interfere with the motor mounts. So In returned the low mount brackets and ordered the high mount.
