You gotta be wound up excited about now...final push and light at the end of the tunnel!!!

I think you are on to something with the toilet idea....pee in the hole without getting the running board wet and win a prize...

Re: Low buck 53' 3100 5 window

Chopit, I am excited! Can't wait.

I found a drive shaft that will work in these trucks with the motor moved back 5" running a th350. A S10 standard cab short bed will fit. Found it in a new pick-n pull I didn't know we had in this area.

looking good man!

for reference, a rcsb s10 one piece driveshaft is about 53", a rclb one piece is 64". I used a longbed driveshaft with my 4.3/4l60e (same trans as a 700r4 just electronic) moved back 5" and shortened it 5.5".

Re: Low buck 53' 3100 5 window

I haven't measured on my new project. 350/700r4 but I have a different twist anyway. It's running a mustang GT rear. If I can find the ends cheap, I'll probably just have Larrys make me up a new one and balance it.

Re: Low buck 53' 3100 5 window

Hey Sim6, just got done looking through your thread, nice... very nice. Congrats on all of the good work. I am still working on mine and I am always looking for ideas on how to accomplish what I have in mind. I like your tires and I want to do something similar. I currently have some rally wheels that I really like, 15x7 front, 15x8 rear. Since I will run with a LQ9, I really want to use 15x10 in the rear, but I cant seem to find the right tire combo with a 4inch white wall. Any suggestions? I would hate to buy the Coker tires and not be able to use them on 10" wheels as the largest tire I found on their site is

Re: Low buck 53' 3100 5 window

Jesse, I think the fastest and most reliable answer would be to call Coker and tell the wheels you're running and how wide you want your white walls and they should know better than anyone. Thanks for the kind words about my build.

Hey Jeff, any updates? How did it go with your door weather stripping etc.?

...we have a new neighbor in Centerton that is building an AD/s10 now. He has a little shop right there on commercial and am negotiating with him to possibly paint mine.

Just doing a little here and there. I used to work with the owner of that shop Jeff Diehl. Not sure if you're dealing with him or Randy. Jeff found my truck for me. And when he saw what I was doing he had to have one. he's gonna flip that one if they get it done.

I've met Jeff before but was dealing with Randy. I was under the impression from Randy that he just recently rented space from Jeff and the repair/paint business was his relocated from Iowa or somewhere.
Said that truck was his shop truck.

I'll touch bases with you since I was thinking about letting him painting my truck.

Re: Low buck 53' 3100 5 window

Good to see you yesterday Jeff, the truck is lookin' AWESOME!!

One of the funnest parts of posting/ reading these builds is going back and rereading the first couple of pages when its almost done, all the changes back and forth until you finally settle in to what its going to be when it grows up lol! Reminds ya of how far you've really come!

I did that with my last bike build and the majority of the parts I had gathered and posted pics of on page 1 weren't even on the build umteen pages later haha

Thanks Richard! Good to see you too, and parts of your killer score. It's fun to see what others have when its the same niche. Got the front bumper hung so it looks kinda done except for the headlights. Might be test driving this weekend!

Re: Low buck 53' 3100 5 window

Thanks chopit for all the parts! Chopit and I ran over to and old salvage yard in Centerton today looking for a few things. This guy has all kinds of old car parts. I picked an old column and steering wheel which chopit helped me get a fair price on and spotted me $10. He also let pick from his stash getting a front bumper splash apron, inside door latch and some other odds and ends. Thanks man, I owe you one!

Re: Low buck 53' 3100 5 window

So after looking at 99's builds I decided to go back to the original steering column. So I tore out the late column and modified the original to work with the power steering. I used the original three on the tree as the auto shifter. My youngest son doesn't like my color combo but I think it's a classy contrast. Thanks for the help 99 and chopit!

I used all original pieces from the shifter box to make the shift linkage work. Not shown in this pic is a bushing bracket supporting the shifter shaft on the lower end of the column.

Very nice looking. I feel like the steering wheel is like a grille. Just such a staple icon. glad you kept it. I like how you made the tree shifter work. I'v seen it done before but never personally had to do it. Looks proper, nice work again.

Hi Sims

I just saw you chopped the original column...how did you support the solid steering shaft to the outside mast jacket? I am thinking about putting a front steer steering box on my original Howard Knapp farm truck...I have been told in stock form these things don't handle like the S10 chassis do....I would be trying to keep the original steering column too...like you did....

Just wondering out loud...

Mike, at the bottom of the pic are the lower part of the shaft and just above that is one of the manual shift brackets from the original set up. It's hole was the perfect size for the lower part of the shaft. I cut it down and welded it to the lower part of the column to support the shaft down there. Then I cut the lower part of the shaft to desired length and welded the bracket on the end of the shaft as you can see.

Thanks dug224!

Getting the wiring tackled. Front lights, engine bay and tail section done! Just got to do the column and dash. EZ Wire kit is a breeze!
