That load of Valiants is one of my images. Note the trailer is stenciled "Road". This was a highway trailer extended at the front and modified from 4 to 6 cars. Clark also had a fleet of 4-car trailers dedicated to rail use. Piggy-backing started in 59 and Clark was one of the first carriers to cooperate with the rails.

It probably depended on the contract, but I have noticed that the tractor usually matches the brand of cars. In this case, it would usually be a Dodge hauling those Plymouths.

It must have been a little funny when a Chevy pulled up to a Chrysler-Plymouth Dealership, lol.

In the 1950's Cadillac in Detroit would not allow a non-GM truck on the property. Western Auto Transports was hauling them from Detroit to the W coast. They took a GM tractor to load out and drove to Jackson, MI where they switched tractors, usually a WC White or O/O with Diesel. Convoy, in Portland bought equipment based on the volume of business they did with each manufacturer. Like UPS, they removed most of the emblems as to not offend anyone. Clark Trans, in this photo hauled Chrysler and GM and mixed the loads. Howard Sober hauled Oldsmobiles and REO, White and IH trucks. His fleet was 98 percent GM with maybe two or three REO's, White 3000s, IHs and at least one Diamond REO.

Great info and pic's. We had the same rules in the Freight Biz. An agreement between the companies and The Union.

M&G Convoy was one of Chryslers major haulers and used Dodges until 75 when Chrysler quit making HD's. They began buying GMs in 76 or 77 and their O/Os eventually followed suit. This was Elwood Taylor's Chevy 90. He was a 'Broker" (O/O) in Newark, DE.

I notice that "Chevrolet" is covered up on that one, like you have mentioned. Even see 2 holes on the side of the hood where the emblem once was. Only they weren't kidding everyone, lol.

Like that on the West Coast too. I remember Convoy Company hauled Mopar's with green and white Dodge's, Pacific Motor Trucking hauled GM products on GMC's and Chevy's (PST was part of Southern Pacific Railroad, and SP handled all the GM plants in CA too), Ford's were hauled by an outfit named Hadley, you guessed it, on Ford trucks.

Anybody know what kind of engine/trans it wold have?

There's an interior shot that shows two big sticks and I would guess a GM 71-series of some type?

Depending on the year, a 4-71 of 150 or160 HP. The grille was already missing forty years ago. There are more pics of trucks in this fleet on my Flickr pages. The last ATC trucks (Freightliners) were still running a few years ago now lettered for Hansen and Atkins. The Hansen family owned ATC.

Would like to see a shot of that Side Emblem, but I would say that it is an 80.

Looks like a '64 Model anyway.

I think Chevy called those an 'E-80'.

S.E. Rykoff. Used to see those mint green trucks all over Southern California. Rykoff was a big restaurant supply outfit, eventually became part of U.S. Foods. The had a lot of GMC's, and many were Toro-Flow powered. Rykoff had their own in-house fleet maintenance department and they were known to be very fastidious. That fact coupled with the delivery type service in which Rykoff used their trucks explains why they were one of the few fleets that actually liked Toro-Flows!

Now if you could find a shot of a Von's Grocery propane fueled HM-7500............
