Re: What Did You Do With Your Truck Today ?
I forgot, last week I did about the same things as Dan.
Even put in new stainless screws to hold it all in. Added new NAPA 7" halogen bulbs and a SpeedWay.com headlight relay kit. Also, installed a cooling fan manual dash switch and fan relay kit. So, yes Dan...how did you achieve the "new" look for the chrome rings? |

Re: What Did You Do With Your Truck Today ?
?? How'd I do what? The headlight buckets or the chrome?
On the buckets: 1st I washed them with degreaser and a scrub brush, then used a wire wheel on my bench grinder to remove rust & some undercoating a previous owner got on them. Then I used Rustoleum red oxide primer and after it flashed I used their Professional grade semi gloss black. Headlight bezels got polished with Turtle wax chrome polish and OOO Steel wool. My stuff is small potatoes;
hsdropout, your paint is NOT "small potatoes". It looks really good. Are you an experienced painter? I'd really like to see details on your home built booth too and any info on the paint, you used, HVLP (I assume) tip size, etc? Posted via Mobile Device |

Re: What Did You Do With Your Truck Today ?
i gutted all the old wiring out of the cab, which was a good thing. I found 14 splices and the ignition switch has 10 leads coming off of it, what a mess. I also patched up a couple spots on the floor and took a wire wheel to the rest of the can floor so I can prep it for coating and then sound deadener. My Rebel Wiring harness has shown up so I can start the task of mounting the fuse panel and running wires to their new home.

Re: What Did You Do With Your Truck Today ?
I'm motivated to have this thing running and driving this summer, so I need to haul some serious ass on it. I'll snap a picture of the wiring after I removed it, I've never seen such a hacked up amount of wires.

Re: What Did You Do With Your Truck Today ?
the steel wool works like a hot damn on the chrome, just don't use it on stainless. It doesn't work so well hahahha I used the 000 steel wool and some NevrDull on the few chrome pieces on my 56 and it shined right up

Re: What Did You Do With Your Truck Today ?
I admit to having occasionally done work on a car that I wasn't very proud of, for various reasons. But for the life of me, I've never understood how guys will do work that is not only lame, but DANGEROUS!
I like myself too much to take a chance on burning myself or my ride to the ground! Posted via Mobile Device |

Re: What Did You Do With Your Truck Today ?
My oldest son turned 10 the other day and tonight he helped me disassemble the carb off my 59. He was so excited. I loosened the screws and then let him take them all out. I'm not sure if he was more amused with the tools, carb or the magnetic tray that he made every screw stand up in. Probably the magnetic tray. It's soaking over night and tomorrow he will get to help put it back together. I'm glad he is finally old enough to help out. He did do some welding last winter on Big Bertha. Mom was not amused though. She worries too much.

Re: What Did You Do With Your Truck Today ?
Better YOU teach him and teach him how to take proper precautions than for him to learn it elsewhere. No one will EVER be more careful with him than his own father.
Some of my very earliest memories are "helping" my dad swap a 283 into his '59 long Fleetside. And later swapping that out for a 348. Good on you! Posted via Mobile Device |

Re: What Did You Do With Your Truck Today ?
My '56 needed something to set it off, give it a theme.
So I added the Texaco logos to the doors and aged them to the patina. |

Re: What Did You Do With Your Truck Today ?
Hotrod1 & Dan, the paint booth is just a 10 x 10 EZ-up on a tarp, with plastic sheeting walls, then a simple 2x frame to support the lights, a rain tarp over top. One small box fan and a filter opening opposite side....fairly simple but works. ZipperWalls from HD work good for opening in plastic...stick on, cut and instant zippered opening
I had no previous experience, just did a lot of reading. Trick is to get gun adjusted properly. HF HVLP $7 gun, used 1 for primer and 1 for finish,.1.3 tip., inexpensive paint $100 +/- per gal kit. Gal kit makes about 1.5 gal. Lots of sand paper (80 to 600 grit) some filler (most ended up on floor). Like they say it's all in the prep & an incredible amount of moving parts around. Cab, bed, tailgate, steppers, 2 rear fenders, 2 front fenders, hood, cowl, facsia.......what did I miss? It is an incredible pain in the a$$, in case you are thinking of doing it...... I now know why they charge so much. |
