Re: My 1965 build thread

removed the stake pocket. I'm leaving them out.

This is what was under it. Now I need to order some inner patch panels for the lower inner lip where the square holes are. Plus repair this area.

Re: My 1965 build thread

Awesome work Alan and once again thank you for posting such great pictures, I have been wondering how to weld the sides and now I see it in action. I do have a question about the stake pocket removal when I looked at removing them myself I noticed that not only are they stake pockets but they also provide rigidity to the top of the bed side (lip) not sure what you call that area. Are you worried about losing strength and/or viberations now since its an 8' long piece? Or are you planning some sort of support?

Hey Alan do you worry about any rust between the inner lips of the seam? I'm just wondering cuz I'm doing the same thing.

Thanks for the comments!! I have thought about it and not sure yet if I will reinforce it or not.

It would be a concern either way I did it. To be honest this truck won't see too much bad weather. I'm concerned that the rest of the area like under the stake pocket where it is rusted thru will show it's evil head later on along the rest of the ledge. It won't be due to welding the seam because I'm sure there is rust already there. I hope you can understand what I'm trying to say.

Re: My 1965 build thread

Nice work, Alan. I know that takes a lot of patience to weld that way....I usually end up buzzing down a line too long and warping something. Thanks for the great pics.

I did about 1"-1.25" welds on the other bedside and it warped a little. I tried to keep it under 1/2" on this one and it worked better. Still had minor distortion. It took about 2.5-3 hours to weld and grind the seams.

I've been busy selling crap on ebay to clean up the clutter and get some cash. Talk about a time consuming task. I'm not selling any truck parts yet. If I do I will let ya'll know.

Alan, I drove past your house on the way to my Dad's Sunday. I was hoping to get a peek at your super-cool trucks, but your gate was closed!

Your work is great! I'm excited to see it all in primer.

Send me a PM next time you think your coming this way. I'll make it a point to be here. I wish the bed was in primer. At least the cab and front end is painted orange. The bed that was sitting on my frame a couple of weeks ago was not mine.

I wish I could come help. But then I will be stealing all of your fun. The welding will all end soon enough, but as far as working and improving these trucks will never stop. Even when were done then another new idea pops up. Thanks for the comments.

I need to get my butt back in gear. I missed Mar-K speacial last month. I've got a PM to MarKtech on the board to see when their next sale will be. I need the inner bed panel patches.
