Re: 1968

hey Matt, so am I. I tried to adjust the hood latch but no go. I have to shift the right fender about 1/16 of a inch. It is 1/16 from being right in the front. By shifting the fender that 1/16 of a inch well that will almost set the latch dead center. I got time to kill until my wiring harness arrives. Then I will start the wiring. I have put it off long enough. It is something I am not looking forward to. But it will not be as bad as I think. I hope. I been buying wire looms and straps and all the tools I need to do the job. All I need now is motivation. After I wire the truck I can start the engine, want that be something. Two years in the making.

Re: 1968

George have you measured your front clip to see if it's square, if not it can throw off your alignment for your hood latch, you may have to loosen everything up and move your radiator support ever so slightly then once your front clip is square then it should be no problem to get the hood latch to line up.

My pass side fender does need to go forward that 1/16 of a inch. but to answer your question I have not measured to see if it is square. I will do that after I shift the fender. But thanks for re-minding me to do that. See you can teach a old dog some new tricks. I got a few days before I get my wiring harness so I will work of that. Thanks a lot Bryan

Re: 1968

Well, today I adjusted the hood. All I have to do was loosen the bolts and push down on the back of the hinge and that brought it where it suppose to be. I had to shim the cowl on the drivers side front bolt. I put two 3/8 washers under the cowl lip and now that is perfect, I didn't like the shims that came out of the hole. I shifted the pass side fender that 1/16 of a inch and I am happy with that. I loosen the bolts in the radiator core support and centered the bolts in the core mount. I put two washers in the hole so that the core support will not shift any more. The bolts in the door frame for the cowl, will I had to use a rat tail file on the hole and push down on the back and boy what a difference.
It seems that everything I touched today turned out great. I did notice that the head light bulb on the pass side needs to turn about 1/4 turn so it will look straight. But that is another day. only about 5 minutes of work. I figured I better start on the truck again if I want to meet my deadline. I want to drive the truck on my birthday which is Aug. 1st. I measured the front and it is so close to being square, that I don't think I could get it any better. Now the hood closes real nice and the latch is center.

Re: 1968

Today I adjusted the left head light. It was a little off. I now think that I will make the gasket for the door handle. Got what I need to do it. I just couldn't pay what they are wanting for a simple gasket. Has anyone seen a distributor cover? It is made out of steel and is chromed. I saw one in a corvette in a auction and I like the way it looks.
Just a thought anyway. It might be home made.

Re: 1968

I had to take a break from the truck. My pump went out in my fish pond. so I have been working on it. My wife thinks I have too many thing going on. I am about to agree with her. still debating on if I need to keep the pond and spend a lot of time working on it. I might even let it grow natural. it would save a lot of money. 200.00 for another pump.

Yea I am. I just have so many thing going on that it just seams that I don't have time for the truck. I went to the insurance office today to look over my insurance policy on the truck. I thought I better have a look see. Well I am glad I did. It wasn't covered for anything. Now I have to take it down to the insurance office and they have to take pictures of the truck. But, they want take the pictures until I get the wind shield in and the bumpers on the truck. So, here I set with my truck un- insured. Not like I haven't been doing it anyway. So this month I want to get those parts installed. Then I will trailer it down and take the pictures. They didn't say it had to run.

Re: 1968

Today, I located my speedometer cable. I cleaned it up and painted I and mounted it back on the truck. Then I started to build some flat shims, that goes behind the hinges.
Up till now every thing was mounting great. Except the right side door(pass side). There is a 1/2 inch gap that can not be adjusted out. So, it finally caught up with me on the (not welding braces inside of the cab). Everyone warned me, but then it was too late.
No having experience in doing this kind of a job, well I have to deal with it now. The only way I see out of this is divide the space between the hinge side and the latch side. So I will be putting a 1/8 inch think plate behind the hinge so that it will shift the door towards the latch side. If this makes since. I can't see any other way to solve this except for taking the rockers off and doing a lot of cutting and welding and grinding. That is not going to happen.
Any other way please tell me. I will post before and after pictures tomorrow maybe.

Re: 1968

George measure both doors and make sure they are the same dimensions from front to back because it's possible you got a hold of a door that has been lengthened or shortened in the past, if they are the same then measure the gap between the A-pillar and B-pillar at the top and bottom on both sides, you just need to do a little bit of trouble shooting to figure out where the problem actually is so you know what your options are.

Re: 1968

Yea I measured them a while back and the opening on the right side is 1/4 wider than the left side. I did not measure the doors I guess I will do that tomorrow or Monday thanks for suggesting that. The doors did come off two different donor trucks.

George 1/4" is nothing I think you can adjust that out by rotating the cab slightly to compensate.
No one will be able to tell the difference.

Re: 1968

I measured the door today. one is 39 3/8 drivers side and the pass side is 39 3/8. But the openings are a lot different. Left side is 38 3/4 and the right side is 39 3/8 that's 1 3/8 difference from one side to another. That's the same side I replaced the pillows on. I guess I didn't weld the pillows in the right place. or measurements. so now I guess I will try with the spacers on the hinges. See if that works.

Re: 1968

Wow George that's a pretty big difference between the two sides, it's no wonder you are having serious gap issues. What I can't figure out is how two identical rockers fit on both sides without modifications on one side or the other if you have that much of a difference in length. I'm completely baffled did you have to section one of the rockers and lengthen or shorten it?
