What's UP

This two-letter word in English has more meanings than any other two-letter word, and that word is 'UP.' It is listed in the dictionary as an [adv], [prep], [adj], [n] or [v].

It's easy to understand UP, meaning toward the sky or at the top of the list, but when we awaken in the morning, why do we wake UP?

At a meeting, why does a topic come UP? Why do we speak UP, and why are the officers UP for election and why is it UP to the secretary to write UP a report? We call UP our friends, brighten UP a room, polish UP the silver, warm UP the leftovers and clean UP the kitchen. We lock UP the house and fix UP the old car.

At other times, this little word has real special meaning. People stir UP trouble, line UP for tickets, work UP an appetite, and think UP excuses.

To be dressed is one thing but to be dressed UP is special.

And this UP is confusing: A drain must be opened UP because it is stopped UP.

We open UP a store in the morning but we close it UP at night. We seem to be pretty mixed UP about UP!

To be knowledgeable about the proper uses of UP, look UP the word UP in the dictionary. In a desk-sized dictionary, it takes UP almost 1/4 of the page and can add UP to about thirty definitions.

If you are UP to it, you might try building UP a list of the many ways UP is used. It will take UP a lot of your time, but if you don't give UP, you may wind UP with a hundred or more.

When it threatens to rain, we say it is clouding UP. When the sun comes out, we say it is clearing UP. When it rains, the earth soaks it UP. When it does not rain for awhile, things dry UP. One could go on and on, but I'll wrap it UP, for now . . . my time is UP!

Oh . . . one more thing: What is the first thing you do in the morning and the last thing you do at night?

It's ok to say screw UP.

I was at a parts store looking for auto trans fluid, which I'm in the habit of calling Dextron. I didn't see any and was walking up and down the isle wondering if I really was blind. One of the employees asks what I was looking for. I told him Dextron and he had a puzzled look on his face. So I said ATF... still puzzled. I spelled it out. "Automatic Transmission Fluid" and it seemed to sink in. They were out of it.

This morning at Lowe's over the intercom they kept saying, "Will the owner of the grey Chevrolet Silverado with a snow plow parked out front please come to the customer service desk?". They announced it three or four times. I go outside after my purchase and sitting parked on the yellow stripes out front (A-hole) was a dark blue with grey lower F250 with a snow plow. I could picture that owner walking around the store thinking, "What's up with that Silverado owner, is he deaf??"

never heard of dexron although still the gm name used today?

probably just as clueless about dexos

bad help really makes it difficult to patronize local business sometimes..

They were out of the gallon jugs, had quarts I didn't see because I wasn't looking in the quart jug area. There was a single row empty where it would be. No wonder they were out. He says, "Looks like I'm out of the big jugs". I asked. "Do you think any of the other fellers would have any?". I got the lost look again. He sure had the (annoying) professional BS lingo down speaking on behalf of the business in the first person. i felt like saying, "So I can blame you for this failure?" . He says, "I have these quarts", and points to a few choices with a healthy stock. "Not what I want. Thanks anyway", and out the door I went. This was my last chance parts store. The one that is everywhere you turn, has longer hours, and is anything but advanced (hint hint).

howdy Larry! just read your Kubota comments in the retirement thread and it made me smile

figured I'd share my family's Kubota tractor experience here..

my folks [Mom mostly] started a commercial lawn mowing business when I was in high school in the 80's

started off with a Kubota 6200, trailer dad built, some commercial lawnboys and stihl trimmers..

several apartment complexes and a motel on I-70 kept us busy in the summers..

folks made enough money to pay for everything and some and pay their son handsomely

I had more of my own money in school than most and all earned in salary..

profits later bought an 8200, some zero turns, etc. all still running around the farm today..

dad was a huge fan of those little machines, they ran great with very little down time..

hard working machines along with hard working operators almost always equals success at some level..

here's a zero turn deck I rebuilt for my mom couple of summer vacations ago, saved her over a $1k and replaced more parts than dealer quoted..

actually saved her more, I wouldn't let her pay for the parts I bought either

The uncle that had breakfast with us a while back came to California in 1968 with the shirt on his back. He is very mechanical, and got a job as an apprentice machinist.

As a single guy he bought a 4 bedroom house and rented three bedrooms out. He got that one paid for and bought another one and another. He now has rentals both here and there. He just bought a place out west of Corona with a large fenced lot and nice shop. He is renting storage for boats and RV's now.

He had planned to move back here when he retired, but he has a young son he is trying to help get started in the excavation business, so I doubt he will ever move here.

The son actually asked if I thought he could get a business going here. I told him you can operate a business anywhere, it just depends on what you want out of life.

And he'd better be ready to bust his butt doing it, in either place. Some people get a silver spoon in their mouths and don't have to bust anything. Some of us were lucky to even have a spoon.

Steve, I live where I grew up. I have observed a lot of people from the time we started grade school until today.

I have thought a lot about the "silver spoon" kids. They are proof that silver spoon doesn't buy happiness.

I keep active registration and insurance on everything..

never know what I'm going to drive or even just park on the street..

just another silly cost of doing business here that won't be missed

Yep, in the Sho-Me state $25.25 one time and your done for life. You might want to factor that cost savings into your evacuation.

Maryland's nickname is the "Freestate", but somewhere along the line they lost the "r". But at least anything under 5t is non-commercial. All 1 tons get hit up harder and you can choose heavier GVW up to 5t for a little more $, but not bad. One time fee would sure be nice, though. We all register our trailers in Maine for a permanent tag.

In Missouri and Arkansas we can buy an antique/historical vehicle tag for a one time fee of around $25.

Maryland started that with 50 years or older. Three years to go with my '72. But I'm thinking about getting it inspected and running regular tags. A couple years ago they started cracking down on the antique tag restrictions and I don't like being told how I can use my property.

There is a bill in the house right now to raise it to 50 years. I don't think it will pass.

Ours is supposed to be for special use, and the vehicle stock, but nobody ever says anything, although, one of the gals had her truck at a local show a couple of years ago. She is kind of outspoken, and I guess pissed somebody off. They turned her in complete with pictures. She had to go get regular tags, because her truck is modified.
