Re: GM Semis
Nice "Crackerbox" Was only in one of these once. And I was cushioning, not driving. That was enough for me. Cool once in a while for a show, yes. An every day work truck, no thanks. This one is "COOOOOOL"...

Re: GM Semis
Now that one is most likely a 6500.

Re: GM Semis
Very nice example of a 4000, but I prefer the heavier spec's of a 6500. Second thought , this one maybe a little too heavy.

Yep. If there was a number to call I would have included it

Yeah, since a your lad a tandem rear truck has been a fetish. And these '60s trucks were the mainstay models of the time (born in '55). But as I have come of age I have grown to appreciate the single axles as having their place for lighter duty... and realizing trucks are tailored to suit. Overkill is awesome but economics is a concern for a business. And today in the antique truck world they are popular for needing less garage space. But mainly... I could really use a truck like that 4000. That's a heap of truck above a 1t

Re: GM Semis
That is one beautiful truck.
Looks like it's a '62 Model. Would love to own it, lol.

Re: GM Semis
Great picture of a nice heavy 6500.
Another '62 Model. Check out those Front Springs. That truck sits so high that they welded some foot rungs to the front bumper and a grille guard to grab onto to boot. Otherwise you would need a step ladder to open the hood, lol.

Re: GM Semis
The six spoke wheel is very uncommon in this series as well, it must be the heaviest front axle available.

Most trucks, years back anyway, in the East had Spokes, where the West Coast had Budds. My '62 6500 here in the East had Spokes, as did my '67 7500 as well as my '71 9500. Although were Spokes stronger and possibly used in heavy West Coast applications? That would be a good question.

Re: GM Semis
The number of spokes is interesting, 6, not the more common 5 spoke. Must be in the 15K range instead of more common 11k range. But, when you deal in concrete, you spec extra heavy in everything.

Re: GM Semis
Many of the old 10-Wheeler trucks were actually Tag Axle trucks. In other words once a Single Axle and then another was added. Check out the first two pictures above. Both look like they have 5-Lug Fronts. I doubt a Tandem Axle truck would come that way from the factory.
Always liked the truck in that last picture. Although what year is it. No emblem on the side, unless it's hidden by the fender?

Re: GM Semis
I don't think the Chevy L series was available as a tandem. The GMC B series was.

Re: GM Semis
Like I said before (), it's great to see a Chevy commercial vehicle surviving in the Netherlands. I suppose "surviving" leaves room for argument with it's crispy past, but certainly a worthwhile restoration project. What are your plans for a bed/body and purpose/use?

Re: GM Semis
So I stumbled upon this site yesterday https://en.wheelsage.org/gmc/ looking at truck pictures. Some of you may already know of it but there is some good stuff for GMC/Chevy truck pictures if you have time to sift...
A few of the semi's and road tractors that I found below... hopefully none are recent repeats. |

Re: GM Semis
I like the Cracker Box cabover. Lance Crackers of Charlotte NC had a fleet of them with 671's (at least I think they were). I worked at a gas station on US 21 just up the street from the plant. They were always going by or taking off from the traffic light. That's how I learned what a Detroit 2 cycle sounded like. The City of Charlotte also had some International trash trucks with them and Allison automatics. You could hear hear workin a mile away.

Re: GM Semis
Yeah, I miss that sound. I remember fire engines and cranes also. Especially the cranes on jobs running constant RPM. Actually, I also really remember the excavation equipment like pans. A friend's dad ran equipment and I remember in the '60s the blowers were always getting stolen from the job site by guys running them on their drag cars.
