really like that flip top filler cap, very cool.

Clem, the Swapmeet always brings something interesting, and this year a few well priced items, but the filler cap, which someone suggested could be marine in Origen definitely was the best.

Same as cleaning, painting items, I did ask myself why did I clean the inside of the inlet manifold....? Coz I can.....

Currently looking for one or more of these old style valve covers below to experiment with, any idea which years they were available so that I can search on Evilbay.

Only want to cut the top off it, so it's about form, not function.

Not sure if I really can ask on here as I am not a trader, but let's see what the UK guys know.

Once again a pleasure. Brilliantly done for charity every year.

I took over 160 photos, and a couple of videos. And this year was brilliant for Nicola and I.

Mate Martin went with us and then went to see a friend afterwards, on the way home we all met up with Kerry "Disasterbus" at Cobham services for a coffee. Always good to see friends.

Every time I see a young guy build a truck it pleases me immensely.


Based on a question asked by a friend in the USA the reply below probably has some relevance to most of us and for those interested.

Yes, the roof is vinyl, and done very smartly. I liked that.

Red truck...... I hope so.

I guess in the show ground more than 900 and then loads parked up and bikes too plus scooters.

One of the best parts of Wheels day to me is that it is for charity.

But also that you will find a $100k car next to an unfinished $1000 car that is someone's pride and joy.

People all get on and there are no prima donnas.

There are all sorts represented and I do not know the exact way prizes are awarded, but I think there are Top Ten awards etc.


This car was built by three school boys........ Aged 14, 15 and 17 with the 15 year old the leader.

I know the family of the leader of the pack as well and have Euan, the dads Helicoil kit in the garage to redo my gearbox mount holes..... Small world.

Worthy of an award for 15 weeks of work to build from scratch using a Lexus V8 motor.

It has Gullwing doors and disabled access with electrical hospital bed actuators robbed from a hospitals scrap pile. That's how rods should be built.

The Boy in the pic is the team leaders brother.

There was a dedicated Licorice store as well.



When I stripped the truck and pulled the engine and transmission, one of the things I found was that both the mounting bolt holes were stripped out, one so much that you could push and pull the bolt straight up and down, the other a very wobbly loose fit.

None of the trans or chassis cross member bolts were the same...... So 4/4 different.

Would so love to know the history of this truck........

I found a copy of the original California title. Came to England in 2004

Not sure if anyone in the USA can shed light on the trucks history..... Where it came from etc.

So it was another job that needed doing before rebuilding.

Paul Y had also brought me a trans kit to fit to make the responses better.

This morning I wanted to remove the trans sump plug, and on inspection found I could undo it with my fingers..... Saved by the bell??
After draining a load of oil I upended it and proceeded to use Euan "Moosevan" 's Helicoil kit.

Drilling, then tapping a new thread for the insert.





Blown clear of all dwarf from the cut. Love a compressor.



Using the introducer to get the insert seated.





Punched out the clips. And remember to remove them as there are two holes that join inside there somewhere.



Yup...... It works.



Finally some more VHT paint just to finish it all off.

Would love to know what dented the inside of the sump so much?



These little jobs make no differencetofunction at all,but weirdly are satisfying..

Easter weekend......

Plan was to go to Wheels Day and enjoy the rest of the weekend away from the truck with Nicola.

Clocks went Forward today, so we are now formally in summer time.

Did a bunch of house stuff this morning and by 2pm there was nothing left to do.

So I sneaked down to the garage to clean up the filler and breather caps for the valve covers. Paint was in mind as I am not prepared to pay the monies that those sexy finned ally pieces cost out there.

My very good friend Bret in Austin, Texas gets the blame squarely for this latest progression........

His engine.



So looking at my valve covers, it needed to be addressed.



Cleaned up.





Then of course I started to clean up the cast ally covers........ What a PITA of a job !!!



I usually chat to my buddy in St Louis, Missourri through the day checking out his work and of course showing him my pitiful progress.
He can paint and wrap a NASCAR race truck in 24hrs so his progress is always fast.

When I moaned about polishing the ally covers, he shot me a couple of pics of some new, unused covers from one of his Sprint cars with a silly Buy it Now and collect later and get a beer price. Price was perfect, but I decided in the end to stay traditional until I go Big Block with silly internals.



Three hours later, hand polished (I did try use my buffing wheels but they failed too)



Nicola also made us an awesome lamb roast for Easter, in the mean time I masked up the covers after they had been polished silly, then washed with Amonia based detergent and then dry cloth buffed again.



The new air filter cover masked as well.

Paint tomorrow.



So off to get some etch primer and fresh Chevy engine block red in the morning.

Hey Bill, trust me, the MoJo does come back, sometimes just not as fast as we want it to get there.

The Ford Taunus Transit van I posted up on page one of this thread was a MoJo death sale...... I lost it completely at one point. Thankfully it did come back, and Nicola made me follow the dream of buying a truck.

Anyway, I spent quite a bit of time at midnight last night chatting with my mates Dennis in St Louis, Missouri, Paul NevEno in Ada, Oklahoma and Chad in Tulsa, Oklahoma......... The nett result was some English cash going to America to be spent on something very secret and special for the truck, to be collected at Clems shindig in October this year.


So last night I started to paint the ally, then realised the job needed etch primer.

Cleaned up the mess today after going to Halfords for more Chevy VHT red.....

Oooooppps, sorry sir, it has been discontinued, but you can try this metallic of the same colour. Price is up too.

At least there was this little pleasure.





Chatted with the owner when he came out...... Seems he previously owned a nice 57 Chevy so he knows our world.

Got home and got started.








While the primer was drying, I dragged the blasting cabinet out and jury rigged my old garage vacuum cleaner to it.

Followed by blasting the headers quickly.



Before and after.





And the job I set out to do when I cleaned up the breather caps.

Not perfect, but happy to leave it like this.





End of bank holiday weekend. Back to work tomorrow.

the other valve covers you like are from a 283 with the Chevrolet script .
I have been trying to find a chrome 6 cyl nova SS valve cover ,
it has the Chevrolet script like the one in your picture
but I ended up with a plane chrome 6 cyl valve cover from ebay.

on your turbo 350 trans mount bolt holes some of them had metric bolts
and the older ones were standard threads .
so that's how they get stripped from people putting the wrong bolts in them .
also where the shift lever bolts on they can be metric or standard too .

I think you are right Jim.

When I shone a light up the bolt hole, there was pretty much no thread, so I knew both had to be redone, it's such a simple process.



Got in from work tonight and Mrs Boss said in passing there was a parcel for me in her car.

Unpacked it...... Joe Gibbs HR-1 oil for running in the motor and some thread sealer.

Getting excited about getting the motor back together with all the new parts.

Funny how every time you think you can sit back, something else pops its dirty little head.

I knew my collectors on the headers were not perfect and when I blasted them over the weekend, I realised the gaskets were not going to last very long.



Note the knife edge.

Needed fixing or replacing.



Purely by coincidence a pair of 3" header reducers came up for sale today, Paul Y saw them and texted me a heads up.

One short phone call, some PayPal cash and I am awaiting these units.

To be spliced onto the headers after some pie crust and modification.





Hopefully at some point I will run out of things to fix.
