Re: 1963 C-10 in NC
Eric showed up shortly after lunch. We got the brakes bled, still need some minor adjusting, but won't take much.
We also worked on the hydraulic clutch. Will need just a touch more adjusting there also. Slave still feels a little spongy, so still has some air in it. Doing all this around a big block and long tube headers is fun if you've never had the experience. Later in the evening we switched gears to the engine. Got the covers swapped, #1 set to TDC, distributor pulled.....plenty of room for removal with the cap removed, engine primed, battery installed and of coarse it was dead, so took the battery out of Austins 63 and the oem starter just doesn't have enough to kick it over. Tried jumping off a truck and same result. By this time it was around 830, so we called it a night. I want to come in tonight and recheck that all grounds are good 1st, before I commit to a hi torque starter as it almost sounds like it doesn't have a good enough ground. Ran block to firewall grounds, battery to block and block to frame, so will pull grounds and make sure we have good contact. Couple of pics of the vintage covers installed.

Re: 1963 C-10 in NC
Thanks TJ. Hoping I just have a bad ground issue and will have the engine resolved tonight. 2nd battery was good, but just got a click at the starter, so starter/selonoid either bad or bad grounds in my opinion.

In the same boat with you Jon, went to start mine on Sunday, got to hear it run for about 2 mins, for the first time since Nov. Hang in there, I'm sure you'll be making motor music soon.

Re: 1963 C-10 in NC
Thanks....we worked all day in anticipation of firing of the engine. All ready and got.....click. Disappointing, but we'll get it right. The starter was good that I put on it so really hoping just a ground issue. If the ground doesn't resolve it.....pass side header off and starter replacement. The 3 bolt snout starters are very limited on whats available. If I have to replace will probably be a powermaster 3635

Re: 1963 C-10 in NC
Might need some more cranking amps to. Sometimes its the starter....sometimes its the battery not having enough guts to.

Re: 1963 C-10 in NC
I had a great time playing with the truck yesterday and wasn't in to much trouble for hanging out all day. I was thinking ground, but you could hear the draw on Austin's truck when you tried to kick it over. I think in the long run a good high torque will save you a lot of headache. Big blocks just take so much to turn them over.

Re: 1963 C-10 in NC
If you got all those CCA's and the battery is fully charged. I'll bet your problems gonna be all that new paint(connection issues)
Performing the Volt Drops should help you find those issues and correct them real quick. Not saying that a good PMGR starter would not be a good addition to that BBC.

Re: 1963 C-10 in NC
Went home and my new ground kit arrived. So, new grounds on both heads to firewall. Added a ground from the voltage regulator to the horn to radiator support and moved and cleaned the block to frame connection. It now runs directly to the block, not off a mount to the block.

Re: 1963 C-10 in NC
And another big concern resolved.
Plenty of room on the tail shaft mount shifter. 1st 3 pics are in 1st gear and last is in reverse. Seat is still two notches from farthest position so still more room to go back. Relieved that we are good here. Do need to figure out a different shift boot as the hurst one will not work here.

Re: 1963 C-10 in NC
Fancy ground straps. My 292 in my 66 never had any for some reason...or any that I remember...its been awhile since I've seen it. haha. My 305 v6 has 1 on the driver's side valve cover to the fire wall. It didn't even matter weather I left it off or not. Not sure if I'm gonna use any on the new engine either...hope I don't need to.
