Re: Blazer retractable convertible top

OK... a new update for the top.. I got the 68-72 Chevelle convertible windshield frame bridge in!
I am pretty happy because the curvature and overall demensions are amazingly close to the bridge on the blazer.. The top of the blazer windshield is approx 60" and the width of the chevelle is 53". So since i think i can actually make this work I ordered one more bridge to section in the 7" , i thought i could try to fab one but i dont have any decent tools to do so and this will much better! I also ordered all the hardware i need to secure the header BOW to the windshield as well ( including 2 brand new header bows @ $360 / ea) which is getting spendy but im into this convertible top for unknown $$ now so I want to continue to do it so it looks very nice and hopefully factory intended once its in action
heres some shots to show the size etc

Re: Blazer retractable convertible top

I seem to remember when the bikini top project was going full swing, someone made a mold of the front section of a blazer top to create an attachment without the snaps... Can't find it now?

Re: Blazer retractable convertible top

NIce! thanks for the link.. that would work great too for a top header and made out of glass would make it lighter as well... Now, reading the thread it seems it may take some time if/when he decides to produce them.. Very cool idea though..

Re: Blazer retractable convertible top

Yeah, that's it. I always wondered if this was something that could be vacuformed from a thicker plastic If you did it in two pieces, assembled it could be pretty strong. Two pieces would also allow you to have two different applications- convertible top or soft top snaps...

Something I've wanted to play with since I was a kid and had a toy version.

Re: Blazer retractable convertible top

I gotta say, welding up the door tops around the rear was worth the effort.

Hey thanks. I like the look as well. Once the joints are filled in and painted it will look much cleaner

Re: Blazer retractable convertible top

So I'm back to working on the top again, now that the kids are back in school and boating season is winding down.. I've been waiting for a time to get 3-4 back to back days to do this windshield bridge from the 68/69 chevelle...
Well I took off some vacation this week to get this thing kick started and spent the last 2 days cutting, fitting and welding this bridge. Lots of time went into recording all the measurements of the windshield frame outline etc...
Then I welded a bunch of tabs on the pillar bracing to give the curvature of the top of the frame to help me line up the new bridge which has been a project saver itself along with the old windshield a buddy gave me so I can use it as a template
I'm about 3/4 complete , just have to fit and weld in one more section tomorrow...
Then before I weld it into the remaining pillars I then have the next huge task of doing the exact same to the convertible top header bow which I purchased 2 new reproductions also from a 68/69 chevelle to mate up nicely with the bridge..
Here's a couple quick shots

Re: Blazer retractable convertible top

First 3 middle sections of the header bow, exact same dimensions are key to getting the same curvature as the bridge..
