Re: Project: NO-LIFE,...
I worked most of the day and didn't make much progress.
I cleaned the grease covered trans crossmember and painted it. Removed an exhaust hanger and found out the doughnut gasket at the manifold is shot. Started to install the TH350. I have ALOT of distance between the new converter and the original powerglide 153 tooth flexplate. (3/8"-1/2",... just guessing,... but that's too much) So I dropped the trans back out. I'm not sure what's going on. I checked NAPA's websited and they show a 168 tooth flexplate for $87,... so I'm going to try that. (that means a new starter) I bought an assortment of moulding clips to fix a few pieces of loose trim. Got the upper tailgate and one lower trim piece secured,... but I got the wrong clips for the upper bed side mouldings. Gotta make another order now.

Re: Project: NO-LIFE,...
That crossmember turned out great. So, what's the deal the powerglide takes a different flexplate? I didn't know that. Keep up the hard work.

The grease was an inch thick on that thing. I get sidetracked with painting sometimes,... when it doesn't really matter. The powerglide takes a smaller flexplate. NAPA only carries the 168 tooth 14" flexplate for the 292. I have a stock SBC flexplate,... but it won't work. The 292 has 1/2" crank bolts. (SBC has 7/16") Plus the 292 flexplate has 3 locating dowels,... the SBC has only 1.

(the drilled hole size it a little bigger than 1/2") Plenty of room for my incorrect drilling. Ha. Plus you can use some old "washer head" fender bolts to hold it in.

Did I mention that was on both the spindle side & rotor side. Yesterday it was the th400 (including the inside the bellhousing where the input shaft is)

I watch the clock, and wonder where the day went. (that's where a giant blast cabinet would come in handy) My TH350 needs a repaint. These tranny shops think rattle can over the 3 layers already on there, will be good enough. I decided to not repaint it. I'm going to pull the 292 someday for a rebuild. (I'll detail the tranny then) Right now I just want to get it "road worthy".

Re: Project: NO-LIFE,...
Small update.
My new TH350 is finally in. Had to buy a new flexplate and starter to make this work with my 292. Also my new flexplate only had the "big" converter bolt pattern. I had purchased a stock converter with my new trans. The TH350 converters have the "small" pattern. Lucky for me,... the guys at the trans shop swapped it out for a TH400 converter with the big pattern. If you need a transmission in central Missouri,... check out these guys. (http://mandmtransmission.com/) Spent last night hooking up all the little things. Today I installed the radiator, hoses, pulley, fan, belts and the fan shroud. (does anyone know if the 292 trucks had a 6-cylinder specific fan shroud?) Doesn't sound like much,... but it was a long day. Also bent up a new modulator vacuum line. (The 5' stick of 1/4" steel line was about 2" short. Ha.) I wish I had time to paint the engine up nice,... but I'm trying to get this truck running for the Kansas Goodguys event at the end of the month. I think all the steel lines would look better, if they were black. Here's a few pics,...

Lookin' good Keith!
Once KS is over, I agree with you, the lines will look good in black.
