New Rear Brakes

Just put some new breaks on my 65 gmc fleetside. I knew that the rear end was a leaf spring option on it but did not know how rare they were. The brake shoes & wheel cylinder are the same as the rest. But the drums are not. They are taller about a 1/2 inch. I first took my drums to Les Schwab to have the drums trued up and they said they were to far gone and that I needed new ones, well they had some @ $80 per drum. I knew I could do better cause I checked online and told them no thanks. I went to NAPA and they had a pair that I purchased @ $40 per drum took them home and tried one and it covered all but a 1/2 inch of the shoe. I took them back to NAPA and showed them the difference, allot of head scratch'n going on there finally the parts guy said why don't you have your old ones trued up they don't look so bad. I told him what Les Schwab had said about them being toast and I didn't think they were that bad either. Well NAPA trued them up for $9, good for another 50 years.
Couldn't find the original drums anywhere NAPA had a listing but no part # for them. Just a heads up about tire shops not looking out for the customer be careful out there. Vernski

Re: New Rear Brakes

Vernski:
The 1000 series GMC trucks all used a 10 bolt Dana 44 rear end with leaf springs. If you need drums in 50 years, you might check the part numbers listed in the attached. I had the same trouble when I started on my 1966 1000 series GMC fenderside.

Steve New Orleans

Re: Historical/This I know/60-66 Model Changes

OK, so tell me this! What determined the sideview mirrors for the models? Were those options? Some have the standard stem and square/circle, some were the work/farm verticle rectangle, and I see others with full on towing mirrors.
Is the vast variety purely from people getting creative on their own or did GM actually put out all these mirror options?

I don't think they to many options in those years. What you probably see the most on these trucks maybe the West Coast Mirrors.

Towing mirrors. People put all kinds of after marked mirrors or just get some off another brand of truck and or just later year Chevy/GMC truck.
I think they were just one or maybe two options.
There are some fellars on here that up to par on this.
I am still learning myself.

They look like they are off of a Ford Ranger. There was one parked beside me today at work. Looked identical to those less the center cap.

I think your truck would look good with Smoothies.
Also go to the search above and search the forum for wheel picture threads so you can get an idea of what you like or not. There are a few that are on here.

Thanks Tony, I'm sure it took some time to research and post all this.

An interesting observation - one downside of the 60-61 GMC hood in particular is with such a large "screened" area open in the front, a ton of road spray and crud is injested especially in the winter. This makes it much more difficult to keep the engine compartment clean, and will clog up an open element paper filter with regularity. Of course if you're lucky enough to have one you may not care about this problem.

"On the 1960 model year the pods had a horizontal bar going across the opening.

On the 1961 model year the pods had a verticle bars in the pod."

I'm sure you meant to reverse the years Jake. The 60 had the vertical only bars. The 61 had the large horizontal bar. Kind of like a 2 bladed propeller.
