Re: '60 GMC 4x4 Long Fenderside
Take a look in this photo and see if your dipstick looks the same height from the exhaust manifold bolt to the top of the tube.

Re: '60 GMC 4x4 Long Fenderside
Also, look at the difference in the oil pans between these two engines. The first one has a 6 quart pan and the second has an 8-10 quart pan. There might be your answer as to which you have:

cayoterun might, he deals with the V12's and they share a lot of parts from the V6's so give him a shout.
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=413154 Edit: On second glance it looks like they have one oil pan so I really don't know.

Re: '60 GMC 4x4 Long Fenderside
Anyone else with info on the dip stick length?
My son and I got her running today! Filled the bowl with gas, stuck a battery in it, and turned the key, and it fired up. Runs smooth, and strong. Sounds good, you can't really hear it in the video, but it sounds GOOD!!! Sorry for the video quality, I was a little excited! |

Re: '60 GMC 4x4 Long Fenderside
I got some answers about the oil quantity.
Over on Jolly's site, I asked them. They gave me measurements for the pan, the dipstick length overall, how far the dipstick "cap" is from the end, and finally, how far the dipstick tube sticks up out of the block. Everything matched except the height of the tube. The 305A with the 6 quart pan should be at 14", and mine is at 16", so therein lies the problem. Next question is, what would be the best way to get the tube out without damaging it? It is rock solid in there, with the top clamp removed. I tried tapping it in further, tried jiggling it side to side, and tried twisting it. No movement at all. Any suggestions? |

Re: '60 GMC 4x4 Long Fenderside
Either that mentioned above or soaking some PB blaster on it. Before you go destroying it though, make sure you can find the correct one you need. It may be hard to get one. Just a thought. Or, get a tube cutter and cut down the tube to the size you need. kind of ghetto, but will get you by until you can procure the correct tube.

Oh good idea with the tubing cutter, I would just do that to avoid breaking it.

Re: '60 GMC 4x4 Long Fenderside
Thanks guys!!
I figured I would try to mess with it some more this weekend. If I can't get it to at least wiggle, I had thought about cutting it off to the right length, but didn't want to say that on here yet. Didn't want to get attacked for mentioning it, because I know that is not the proper way, but it is better than not knowing how much oil I have, or overfilling it. |

Re: '60 GMC 4x4 Long Fenderside
Didn't mess with the dipstick, but did get the clutch slave in, and got to take it for a drive! It was only down to the end of my road and back, but she was totally under her own power the whole way.
It was shuddering any time I accelerated, so I think it is either timing, or the clutch. It seemed to idle fine, and if I kept the clutch in, it ran smooth, but the second I started letting it out, it started shuddering. After getting it back into the garage, I backed it out again, and took a hose to her, so every time we look at it, we don't end up getting dirty. She looks pretty sitting out in the sun! |

Re: '60 GMC 4x4 Long Fenderside
Haha sounds like fun! We did almost exactly the same thing with my dads 70 C20 after we pulled the bed off (except no front fenders and 5 gallon buckets to sit on), we drove it down to the car wash to clean everything we could now get to.

Re: '60 GMC 4x4 Long Fenderside
I am lining up someone with a timing light... or I'll just go buy another one of my own. (mine is a war prize for the ex) I have looked through numerous threads on here, and anywhere else I can find information, and can't seem to come up with what I need to know.
According to the service manual, the timing is supposed to be set to 5 degrees. According to the timing (pulley?/disk?) on the crank, that would be the dot in between the two lines in the picture. If the letters are not visible in the picture, it says from the top down U - D - C - 1 - 10. I have read many threads about the 305's and no one really seems to say where their timing is set at. I don't currently know where mine is at, until I get the light. Any suggestions on where to set it, and is there any special procedures to follow with this engine? I have the Holley 500 carb, and Pertronix ignition, if that affects anything. |

Re: '60 GMC 4x4 Long Fenderside
I always set mine with a vacuum meter instead of a timing light.
With a "T" connect the meter between the carb and the vacuum advance, then dial your distributor in to where you have the strongest vacuum. This is after making sure your carb is dialed in, of course. Not sure what your altitude is there in Idaho where you live, but in Spokane we are between 1800 at the base of the falls to 2200 at the top of the South Hill, not that a couple hundred feet will make much difference, but a thousand or more does. Anyone that has driven to Mt Rushmore, or Crater Lake (Oregon) knows how bad your car will run up in those spots. Not sure if that helps you any sir, but its a fun story and I like telling it

Re: '60 GMC 4x4 Long Fenderside
I learned about the vacumm guage trick from an old motorhead, they are not very expensive to buy $20-$30 if I remember correctly.
The trouble was I kept trying to set my timing by the book and the engine was running like crap. Once I dialed it in with the vacuum, it ran like a champ. Good luck, hope this works better for you!!

Re: '60 GMC 4x4 Long Fenderside
My son and I worked on fine tuning the carb, and the timing.
Here is a couple of videos of her 3rd trip down the street and back. Still needs some more adjustments to the timing, and or the carb. Still not much power. Better each time though. The brakes are still very soft. Have to pump them several times to get any noticeable results. They stop the truck, just not very well. |
