Re: 1970 One Owner Short Step
i think it will look great when its finished, wonder what kinda wood it is? if ya have a dremel maybe you can polish the rivets too to make them stand out... whatever stain you try go light on the application, second application if necessary.

Very nice work getting the grill installed and the that's cool steering wheel. I know how time consuming all the little things get on these trucks, but you really are getting close. I hope you can make the March/April cruising season .

Re: 1970 One Owner Short Step
I finally got the bed painted abd have spent the last couple of days fitting it. I have been moving at a snail's pace because I haven't built a wood bed before, so I am taking it super slow.
The results have been very good and I only have one scary part left: drilling the carriage bolt holes. I did figure out I am going to have to drop my fuel cell to get to the cross member behind the rear axel. Nothing like doing something 2, 3, or 5 times before its actually done. I set the completed box in the frame so I could test fit everything. I also put the left fender on to double check the fitment of the filler neck. Now to pull it all back off and finalize everything. One day it will be done.

Re: 1970 One Owner Short Step
Bout time you had something to report on the bed. Box is looking great and I love that wood! I'm wondering why you didn't get the fenders painted along with the box though?

Thank you. I appreciate you stopping in! I know right? I have been really busy (I am sure you know all about that). I didn't paint the left fender because I needed to weld in the fuel filler behind the side marker. Hopefully everything will be painted this week and final assembly will be completed. I might have to come visit real soon.

Thank you. Everyone questioned me in the beginning but it looks great in the sun. Here is a little more info about the side marker fuel filler. I used a '03 Chevy 2500 fuel neck and a 06 Ford "cup" (no idea what the real term is) to attach the neck to the fender. Since I planned on doing this long before I painted the truck I started mocking it up on the fender before body work started. We then got the box for the bed completed abd on the frame so I could mock up the fender and get final placement. We then welded in the "cup" and I attached the filler neck as you see it. Then we took everything apart and painted it. It was a little extra work this way but it is very sturdy and works extremely well.

Re: 1970 One Owner Short Step
to adjust for the curve on the fuel door arm, on the left side (front) of the side marker I used a long bolt with a phillips head on it so it appears to be a stock screw and the I used three nuts, one just behind the side marker to hold it out the second to get the correct space between the side marker and the fuel door so it would close flush with the fender and the third to hold the side marker to the fuel door.
On the right side I used a shorter bolt, washer and nut to bolt it to the fuel door. I put a slight bend in the fuel door arm which seemed to help the side marker sit flush.

Re: 1970 One Owner Short Step
Here you can see where the neck bolts into the "cup".

Re: 1970 One Owner Short Step
Here you can see where I drilled out the right side so that the bolt on the right side of the side marker can recess into the fender. The left side is done the same way.

Re: 1970 One Owner Short Step
Couple of shots from the back side. I didn't realize until it was too late that my fuel cell abd filler neck were different sizes. The smaller hose has a wall thickness of 1/4" so it is very sturdy which allows me to clamp it together. I looked at all of my local parts stores for what I needed abd couldn't find anything.
