Re: 1965/73 Cheap Build Up

Are you saying that I can take the cab and front sheetmetal from a 66 longbed and transfer to a 73-87 shortbed. Is the width close.

The width is the same, but the mounts are different in the front, and the back you will have to do some work to make the cab sit level by channeling the cab over the frame, and, or modifying the frame for the rear cab mounts. I haven't finished the back mounts yet. I still have to get the cab a little lower in the rear, and make the rear mounts. If I were to do it over again, I think I would change my mind, and shorten the 65 frame. I'm going to air bag it anyway, so converting it to leaf springs wouldn't matter. I'm always looking to do things different, and it always works out, but makes a lot more work for me.

I took it apart and scrolled the numbers to zero. You have to take the shaft out on the number roll to do it. Have fun.

Re: 1965/73 Cheap Build Up

I'm sure all of the odometers are the same around that same era. I rolled my 59 Impala back. It took me about 15 minutes too figure it out and had it rolled back in about a minute. Lets see if I can explain this. I grabbed the gear end and spun it back until the first digit stopped. Then I flipped the first metal tang next to it the oposite direction. Then the next digit spins along with the first (the digits are lined up) until those stop and repeat the process. Getting the tangs to line up in the proper position once installed is a pain. Here is a pic of what an Impala looks like. I think I took this pic before I had all of that figured out.

No, it comes from a small island in the Carribean.

When are you going to work on your drip edge? I want to see what that's going to look like. Do you have any pics of other trucks that have it ? Later Daverod

I'll start the body work after I get it running and on the road. I want to be able to drive it while I'm working on the body. I got the idea from the 47 Studebaker Truck I owned. They came stock this way. Here's a picture of it. It's hard to see. Look close, and you can see the flare on the roof edge, and A pillar.

Jeez Dennis, I learned how to drive a stick in an old Studie pickup like that. Had an old brass door knob for a shifter knob. (3spd on the floor). I personally like the old glass doorknobs that have turned blue/green with age in a vintage truck like this. MO will go in the mail tomorrow, you should have it by the end of the week.

Your right it's hard to see. Thats one cool old truck though. Since your not doing any body work that must be sheetrock dust all over the place.

I'm not doing body work on my truck. I was doing body work, and panel replacing on a 67 Mustang.

Re: 1965/73 Cheap Build Up

I worked a little on my GMC headlights, and they fit like crap. There's that gap between the Grill support and the grill. To make it look good I would have to tunnel the complete grill support, to sink the grill in to get rid of that ugly gap on the side of the headlights. What do you guys suggest? I'm thinking of s**t canning the whole GMC Grill idea all together, and go with a stock Chevy 2 headlight grill.

Re: 1965/73 Cheap Build Up

I feel guilty that I haven't worked on the truck. I mocked up the Camaro Steering column yesterday. It looks like the brake pedal assembly from the 73 will work by just drilling the holes in the fire wall. Then the power brake assembly will bolt right on it. Also it looks like the Camaro column will bolt right on that pedal bracket. Another bonus is the steering shaft to the steering box will fit too. I'll post pictures ASAP.
