Re: Great deal on new crate engine

I bought #236 today. Still seems like a killer price instead of going through my old one. Turn the key maybe by the end of March..

Re: Great deal on new crate engine

Hi Guys, great thread, i dont post much but i love this site. i thought id give you a long term report on the gm crate engine in this thread. i bought the exact engine in 1999 for 1227.00 put it in my 70 GMC as it came in the crate. it had a q-jet and headers at that time. after 12,000 miles i put a edelbrock performer intake and cam in. just the 204/214 420/442 cam. it now has 70,000 miles on it and runs great. does not burn any oil and purrrs like a kitty. the deal some of you got is outstanding, comparing to 1999. that was cheap then!! also, as mentioned high performance chevy did several articles on this engine. the 260hp figure was dual exhaust,4bbl. the small cam i put in helped it quite a bit, it has nice torque. also, chp stated they found the engine was 8.0 comp, all i run is 87 octane. hope this info helps. Mine won't be going in until May/June. Truck still runs/drives OK for now, but my Mustang needs brakes and suspension bad, so that's getting done first.

I wonder if they really price match or not, I paid 1529 on Friday 2 days ago.. Still a good price, but hey, that's a couple hundred bucks!

Re: Great deal on new crate engine

Sounds like a great deal. This Ebay/Jegs listing is displaying 260hp and I know this item number should be around 195hp stock. Am I missing some small print?

Note: This if you add a HiPerf intake, Headers, Fat Carb, power tune it you can get it to 260hp...

If this is the 195hp version, I've owned it before in my 4WD and was a smooth running engine but the power wasn't awesome. I replaced that one with a 454. I am considering ordering one for my 2WD ShortWide. It should push that around good enough.

Re: Great deal on new crate engine

Well looks like they just changed the price back up to $1529.99 again. Must have been a typo. That's what I get for not pushing the button! They probably got a few phone calls and adjusted the price.

I put one in my 1/2 ton '69 Suburban and it's working out great so far. I have about 3500 miles on it.

Those are shorty block hugger headers. They won't work on our trucks. I just put them on there so the ports wouldn't be wide open. The distributor was in a 377 stroker motor I bought from Dieselwrencher. I put the engine in my '34 Ford Coupe but the HEI wouldn't fit so I put it in the crate... I will check with him to see where he got them.

I ordered one today. Machine shops around here want $1500-$1900 for a basic rebuild.

So I saved Jegs listing on ebay, and just happened to look last night, and it was $1,207.99 with free shipping. That's the lowest price they've had in a long time (if you look at the sold history, they do routinely lower the price) and the best price I've seen from other sellers. Free shipping too.

So now I've got the new motivation for the C10.

Go for it! If that engine meets your needs you can not beat that price.

Re: Great deal on new crate engine

I'm all for supporting local mechanics but in some areas like here in southern CA the shop rate is WAY steep for machinework /rebuilds and budget wise I'd be losing out on money needed in other areas of the truck.
I have a gm crate motor in my c10 and its a great daily driver.
Plus the aftermarket 350 has more HP /tq than if I dumped the $$$ into my 307

Thanks for updating, got a friend needing a motor for his 72 swb
