Project: Old Timer...

Well I think it's about time I start a thread on my latest project... I've had this '68 for eleven years now and I'm finally serious about working on it. I got this truck from my grandpa-it belonged to his father who bought it new. (The truck was originally a long step side.) When I got the truck I had full intentions on making it a short wide. So what did I do at 16? I took a running and driving truck completely apart and got rid of everything except the cab and front clip. The frame and bed went to my grandpa's farm.
I found a short bed frame and a short fleet bed and set the cab and front clip on it. Thats how it's sat for the last nine or so years while I've worked and played with other trucks. Now, with my grandpa not getting any younger I want to at least show him that this truck is not going to waste. I've got big plans for this truck; maybe too big of plans. I'm probably dreaming on how I want this truck to be, but I plan on it taking me quite a while to accomplish.
Within this last year I decided to make the truck look like it did when my great-grandpa had it-but with my sense of style-so I went and got the frame and long bed from my grandpa's. I plan on cutting everything down to a short bed, so it'll be a short step side, painted and kind of orignal looking, layed out on 20 and 22 inch Twista Vistas (I hope I can do this with a stepside), fuel injected (maybe some kinda forced induction) LSx, tremec five speed, 14" wilwoods....and a lot of Porterbuilt goodness!

Pictures coming soon.... I promise!

Re: Project: Old Timer...

I don't have any pictures of the truck when I first got it. Maybe I can find something at my grandpas. This is what it looked like when I just now started working on it. First I started getting everything off the frame (saving the short frame for my current driver.)

Re: Project: Old Timer...

Got the frame cut down to a short wheel base. Still need to grind and weld some kind of plate to the inside of the frame.

I think the third will be the Buick. Since my wife won't let me get rid of it. I'd like to see you try and take it from her! She loves it like a fat kid loves cake!

A little bit done this weekend. Got the rack notches welded in and the front dropmember bolted in (just loose).

Re: Project: Old Timer...

I marked the center of the notches. Then measured the 4.25 from the center of the forward crossmember mounting hole. Then the 2.5 down and just held the notch up to the frame. I outlined them and marked the bottom edge of each notch. Then ran a straight edge from one side to the other and marked the front and back of each notch. Then cut them out. I used a piece of square tubing and clamped the notches to it so they'll be straight with each other (look at my other project second time around). I hope that made since to you....

Re: Project: Old Timer...

Got a little bit done today or should I say yesterday. Pressed in the lower ball joints (a lot easier than the last ones I did.) Put the a-arms, bags, and spindles on. I need to buy a rack and some conversion axles. I think I'm going to buy some rotors for now, so I can get it rolling tell I can afford big brakes (if I'm still going that route?) Got a few other things put on (see if you notice...)

I cut the rear brace out and I needed something else to go back in there... so I had this tranny crossmember that I won't be using. I cut the trans mount off and smoothed it up and it worked perfect!
