Re: '60 GMC Suburban (Project D-Daddy)
Thanks 88! Some more progress. I'm not very pleased with a couple spots on the dash so I am going to have to fix them and redo it again I think...but the rest turned out great. I know some people will think I am crazy for not getting in the floor patches before I painted but I am just not ready to tackle them yet (hoping to talk a friend into doing them for me since I am not that great of a welder). When it's time to cut them out and weld in new ones, I'll mask off everything and lay down some fire blankets to keep the new paint from getting ruined.
And check out this old book of stamps I found stuck in my defrost vent! Looks to be from the era before zip codes.

Re: '60 GMC Suburban (Project D-Daddy)
Awesome work! I would love to come check out your rig and see what is similar to mine and maybe get some tips on the things you have done. You said north pdx... only about a hour away.
Great pictures too. Nice to find a local with almost the same rig.

Re: '60 GMC Suburban (Project D-Daddy)
That's cool, I think my boys and I are going to make it to the gathering at Jantzen Beach on the 15th. My rig is not road worthy yet so we will be in the car, but it will be nice to meet and see some other great suburbans and trucks.
Thanks, there is actually two saddle tanks inside above and rear of both fenders along with the main tank.

Hey Cord,
Any idea on what you are going to do on the interior roof ? I haven't decided what to do on mine.I have looked at what other's have done, but i would like to keep it close to looking original with more heat shield under it.

Re: '60 GMC Suburban (Project D-Daddy)
Here's the progress for today. I had to grind all of the surface rust inside the window frames and prime/paint. I got the drivers side done today and hopefully I'll be able to do the pass. side tomorrow and then all of the window frame prep will be completed. I just ordered the windshield gasket, so hopefully I can get that installed in the next couple of weeks.

Re: '60 GMC Suburban (Project D-Daddy)
Progress! So, this week I got my Precision Brand windshield gasket and I installed it onto my windshield last night. I used 3M weather strip adhesive and taped all the hard bends and left it over night. I did the work inside so everything would be at room temperature.
Today I came home and installed the stainless steel trim. I am excited to put this thing in! I'll be that much closer to driving her again. It has been a long 5 months.

Re: '60 GMC Suburban (Project D-Daddy)
Cort,
What kind of paint are you using for the interior. Is it special mix spray cans or have been lucky enough to find closely matching colors for the Sub. It is nice that you are doing the interior close to stock, many of these old dashes get hacked up so badly it is tough to fix them. Looking good buddy! |

Re: '60 GMC Suburban (Project D-Daddy)
The interior color I've been getting at Lowe's. It is Rustoleum Stainless Steel. It's a little darker than stock, but I actually like it better and the finish is perfect I think.

Re: '60 GMC Suburban (Project D-Daddy)
Woohoo! Got the windshield in yesterday. And get this: with my girlfriends help, it took us all of 35 minutes!! After all the threads I read where guys have snapped windshields and glass companies have screwed them up, it was super easy, I thought. I am going to write a separate thread on what I did and how it was so easy for me.

Re: '60 GMC Suburban (Project D-Daddy)
Well i can tell you from expierence that on a 64-66 with the stainless trim I have seen glass guy's try to insert the windshield into the trim slot in the rubber more then once....The old school guys get it. But some of the newer glass guy's get confused with all the slots in the rubber....Infact I once watched a glass guy try to reverse the rubber and put the outside in the inside...Good job for doing all the research and setting yourself up for a easy install....thats awesome....glad it all worked out for you

Re: '60 GMC Suburban (Project D-Daddy)
That 351 with a TBI will be a torque monster for sure. A perfect candidate for some 2.73 or 3.00 gears. The 4 spd will almost be a requirement now to handle the torque of that engine.
