Truck runs awful

Adjusted the timing and it cranked up again, still have issues with pushing the choke in

Hey Howard, so it runs now except for the choke? or does it die out when you push the choke in? or is it just an bad choke cable? Have you driven it since you've gotten it running?

How do I know if its a bad choke cable?
I've driven it occasionally, it dies when I push the choke in, watch the video and you'll see what happens to it

Well, if you pull on the choke knob, it should pull the little lever which closes the choke plate inside the carburetor, thus "choking" to bring more gas on a cold start, and visa versa. Pull the air cleaner off, have someone work the choke and you see what's actually going on under the hood. It's quite a simple thing. You might check for vacuum leaks. I can imagine the single barrel carburetor might need attention; though simple, sure can make for some running problems.
I did watch the video I had a similar problem with the 6 cylinder that was in my truck from the start. I got it to run, but ran crappy. Now I have a nice running sbc.

The carburetor has been rebuilt. it squirts gas out the shaft thing

I put new tail light housings on the truck, just wondering how I can wire it up

well, take a close look at your carburetor, shouldn't be squirting gas out, not to mention a potential fire hazard! EEk!

As for you tail lights~ is there existing wiring where the lights would go? Do you have a test light? You may want to buy one and have it on hand for checking wiring to see if particular wires are Hot, or not. You may have to start at the fuse box, trace wires under the truck, check for cut wires, bad connections, etc..

It is hard to tell how it is running from the video. If its manual choke go to the carb and open it up all the way as if it was all warmed up, my 67 c10 had a bad stumble to it cause my choke cable was still engauged even tho i took it off choke making my truck run on fast idle and then shutting off when i gave it the beans. Also have you checked for any vacuum leaks, should be too many places to leak from on an inline.

What can I use to connect the new wires? I have a female connector that out go on the wire to connect to the prongs. I'd like to get the dome light, and tail lights/turn signals working

There should already be a harness for it, if its gone just got to a pick and pull to get another pigtail and solder your wires to the pigtail and plug em in

Tried getting an alternator bracket off for my truck today at a local junkyard and couldn't get it off so I gave up on it. Looks like I will have to buy a new bracket set

I have a Mouse problem in the truck damn things are everywhere in it. The bench seat has a nest in it. To top it off the Distributor is behaving erratic and all over the place. Thank God I have a backup distributor if it is worn out

See you are back at it, here are some comments.

1. Choke issue. Usually when it runs fine with choke closed but dies when you open the choke it is a vacuum leak. The additional air from the leak leans it out so it will not run. High idle with choke on disquises the problem. Get a vacuum gauge and hook it up you will find it is low and bouncing all over the place. Take starter fluid and spray around the manifold base, carb shaft, vac advance fittings, if the engine raises the rpm you have found the leak. If it is reading 16-18 on the vac gauge they it is another problem.

2. Tail light wiring. Since you are starting from scratch I would recommend using a trailer connector to connect the tail, turn and future back up lights to the front harness. Bonus is when you pull the bed you are just unplugging one thing. Just solder the connectors, cover with shrink wrap and you are good to go. I used them for my front turn signal grille, dash bezel and in the back too.

4. Post a pic of the trans cover, don’t understand the throttle question. Sounds like it was changed out at some point.

The Transmission cover came out of a V8 so it won't fit the I6 area it is different. The Distributor is behaving weird, it shoots around to the retarded timing area when I try to set it. Thanks for the Link

trans cover is the same for v8 or i6 in chevy, gmc is probably the same
some have the 4 speed hole in them
gas pedal pivot goes thru the fire wall

if your distributor is flopping around, fix it
as lowrodder mention: the vac advance should be firmly attached to the distributor
also make sure the clamp is holding the distributor to the block

If its the same then mine doesn't line up the holes correctly. On one side it doesn't lay flat and there is no place to put the Gas pedal on the transmission cover. Could it be the Distributor is bad, because I haven't loosened it up and its tight as it can get

I believe my Distributor is broken now due to it moving around erratically like its doing. It is moving around to the Retarded timing area. Its tightened down as it can get, it just started doing thing and I'm unsure of how and why its doing what it is doing
