Re: 1972 3dr Suburban Build Thread

Today was a good day bad day. I hit a local car show in Bountiful Utah. I took home an award ''Make-Out Special Award'' I don't know what that means, but I'll take that as a complement. There were a lot of nice 67-72's there. I talked to most of them and had a blast.

When I pulled up to receive my award by a local news anchor. I waited until he announced me and then aired out the bags, receiving an aww from the crowd. That was sweet.

After didn't go so well. I stopped at my parents house and thats were my battery committed suicide taking my starter with it. After two hours and a trip to the parts store we were on the road headed home. Even with the problems, it was a good day.

Have you seen the windows?

I haven't done anything on the Suburban to day, it's my wife's birthday. I do have some old pictures of the suburban I will post later today. For all the time I've spent on the Suburban I figured I can give my wife one day to do what she wants.

Re: 1972 3dr Suburban Build Thread

Here are some pictures from 1989 of before it was painted the first time. Notice the after of the lower molding. The painter ripped the old off and didn't want to pay the extra to do it right. The paint job was good other than the rust was not taken care of and it came right back.

I want to thank Mike for taking such good care of the suburban over the years. I can't take credit for all of the work that has been done to the 'burb. His time and effort into the beginning bodywork and the up keep of the engine and drive train really saved the 'burb from becoming another parts vehicle.
The suburban served your family for many years and I feel it an honor to pass it on to my family for years to come.
The award I received belongs to you just as much as me for all the love you put into the suburban.
Thanks guys.

Re: 1972 3dr Suburban Build Thread

I finally met my first board member, Babyblueoval flew all the way from Arkansas to help me put in a carrier bearing. (Thanks for the help.)

Wednesday night we went out to dinner. Took the burb, and noticed a clunking when I accelerated. When we got back we looked underneath and noticed the carrier bearing was fine but the mounting bracket was broken. Thursday night, we went to get the part and he helped me put it in.
I will be looking forward to your Blazer build thread.

While the drive shaft was out, I decided that I'd put a coat of black on it.

I have a car show tomorrow, Taylorsville Dayzz, where I should meet a few more board members. I'll post some pictures later.

Re: 1972 3dr Suburban Build Thread

I had the exact same thing happen to my carrier bearing on my 72 LWB, and i replaces it, and that one broke as well, so i put a little piece of rubber between the crossmember mounting plate and the carrier bearing and that seemed to work, just beware that it could break again...looks great as always man, nice job....

The bearing that was in there was only about two years old. I will definitely have to try that, thanks for the tip.

Re: 1972 3dr Suburban Build Thread

Here are some pictures for all of you who missed the show.

The family had a good time on the 180 mile round trip. The burb stayed cool, but burned though a tank of gas. Money well spent!
What now? Put the burb on the back burner and move to the 71 Cheyenne.
To date the total cost of the build is a little over 7,000 including the burb. I feel lucky I have an understanding wife who puts up with all my crap.
Thanks for the support from everyone and I hope to see you next year.

Thanks a lot, one of my mottos is that it is not what you know it is who you know.
When I first bought the suburban, I saw a few nice ones in magazines but it didn't really give any detail on what was involved in building one. This site has been a wealth of information for me. As always, I look forward to seeing your progress on the tahoe.

I pulled the suburban out yesterday, I snapped a few pictures with the old steelies and beauty rings on it. I think they look pretty good.

Needs more offset in rear. But does give it a good look for sure.

Absolutly an awesome truck. The interior is very clean, and not too over the top, which I like. Two toning the center consol really made it look right.

Thanks.
Yes, my tires are sucked in a bit in the back, I think a 1 1/2 spacer would solve that. All four rims have the same offset.

I still have a few more things to finish on the burb, but that will have to wait. I plan on having a lot of fun when I do the Cheyenne's interior, it will be similar to the Suburban's.

Thanks. Which ones? I know. Anyway the shipping would be killer.
I love both sets of my rims, I honestly don't think I could part with them. You are doing a great job on your Suburban, keep us posted.

Re: 1972 3dr Suburban Build Thread

Well it's been almost a year since I did any work to the 'burb. Last week I pulled it out from under the tarp. I washed a years worth of dirt off, what a mess.

This week I pulled the old windshield out and installed a new one. I picked it up from a local glass place for 130 bucks. This one has been a real beast to install, but I managed to not crack this one. I also put the wheel adapters on. I've needed them for some time now, my rear wheels rub the inner wells when I turn hard.

I also fixed the grill. I took some 1/4 plastic, blue was all I had. I shaped the piece with a coaping saw and an angled grinder, then used body filler to smooth it out.
