Re: 1955 12 Valve NAPCO Clone

Yeah I have been doing some studying up on it. I bought a DVD off ebay that might tell me alittle bit too. I figure dieselwrencher might have some horror stories about folks doing it themselves.

Here is a good write up.

I have heard several stories about them blowing up because guys didn't assemble them correctly. But, as long as you mark everything exactly how you remove it, and lay it out in order, you should be able to get it done.

Ah the simple days. A blind monkey can rebuild a Holley .

At least these things only need 1 wire to run ! Like the HEI of Oil burners ...

Good luck with it. If it needs major parts, just let me know....

Re: 1955 12 Valve NAPCO Clone

Well it is apart. My only casualty was a stripped torx screw that bolts the pressure plate for the feed pump to the body. I didn't have a long enough torx screwdriver so I improvised and messed one up.

I don't really see anything out of the ordinary except the condition of the rollers and the camplate seemed poor. They are rough and pitted.

At this point i'm really at a loss to think what could be wrong. The vanes on the pump seemed to be in good shape and the stator was in good shape as well. I thought maybe the pressure regulator but this seems to be a high pressure problem more than the internal pump pressure being low. I noticed I had alot of fuel puddled up in here. It had just started leaking out the vent before I installed the other long block.

Yep. Needs horizontial bearings for sure. Thermo coupling looks bad aswell. I'd shim the main shaft 0.002 and try it. If that dont work apply at least 2 full cans of mexican chrome bumper paint. Then put it in a box , mark CORE on it and send it to a shop that can send you a new one....

Not what you wanted to hear I guess. Lol. Your a braver man than me Luther. I'd put it in the box and ship it for sure . What parts are included in a rebuild kit? Is there even such a thing ?

Keep pluggen away ! Your so close now !!!!

I would put in a box and send it somewhere but a new pump costs about twice to four times as much as i paid for my used long block.

The rebuild kit includes all the seals, o rings, and copper washers. No hard parts just consumables. I wish I could guarantee I have found the problem somewhere but I can say that I have not.

Re: 1955 12 Valve NAPCO Clone

Here is an update from this weekend. After talking with some guys on a Cummins board after I had run out of ideas one of them recommended the plunger return springs. I hope to replace them and see what happens. Just waiting on parts now.

After compression

I also got my new downpipe made. I have an FL60 Freightliner manifold I got from Dieselwrencher but it still was gonna hit my firewall with my stock downpipe so I did some slight modifications and got it to work. Thanks again to Dieselwrencher.

I also started on my bed mounts. I welded some angle to the bed to mount the bed to the frame and then started on the angle for the bed floor. I have to run it alittle raised up since the dodge frame isn't flat. Any recommendations on how to make a board swing up to gain battery box access?

I also started on cleaning up the gauges a little. All I did was sand the chrome down on the bezel cause it had a bunch of pops in the chrome and also cleaned the plastic lens. Then I sanded down the gauge face and repainted it black. I hope to get it put back together tonight. I have to start wiring soon. I need to figure out which wire to tie into my main power feed for the system.

Re: 1955 12 Valve NAPCO Clone

I am looking at getting a new complete wiring harness from Classic Truck Parts of America. It would be the alternator setup for the original harness. Anybody have any experience with this kit? I think I will prolly use one of the junction block fuse kits you can get from a chain auto parts store to add my electric fan relay and any other things I might add later.

Re: 1955 12 Valve NAPCO Clone

Got my pump put back together. Good news and bad I reassembled the pump with components from a used one and got it installed and running. Bad news is that it still has a miss I'm at a loss. I'm thinking about getting new 5 x 12s because that's all I have left that I can think of.

I'd try to do the small board behind the wheel well and just make that one flip up like delmo did with that full board but make the strip flip up like you said. That's how I was picturing it and it won't stop you from filling up the truck if something is in the bed.

Re: 1955 12 Valve NAPCO Clone

Thanks 6bt. Hope y'all have had a safe trip! This was the harness I was planning on running since I have no future for power windows, cruise and what not.

http://www.classicparts.com/1955-59-.../#.UUZdDDeyLIY

Also I got some of those hinges from Lowe's yesterday for $3 a piece. I think I am gonna use the short board theory like y'all said. I won't have the metal strips separating them since I'm going for a more old work truck look.

I drove the truck on Saturday and hope to post a video up soon. If I could ever figure out this miss I will be burning Bias ply rubber!

Re: 1955 12 Valve NAPCO Clone

That harness looks a lot like the 1st one i tried. I hope its better. I looked at the 1st one for 20 min and thought no way. Put that pos in the box and sent back. I can honestly say I am good at electrical stuff, that harness was not labeled at all . the diagram was a joke . Cheep yellow and blue ring terminals all over. The AAW was twice the $$$ but no way I could have done a whole truck with the other harness in 14 hrs .

I wish I knew who built my 1st harness so I could say for sure . It does look very similiar tho.

I put a post up on my page abt the fuel pin .

How bad is your miss?

Re: 1955 12 Valve NAPCO Clone

It is a pretty significant miss. It is enough to make the engine shake hard. I changed the fuel filter, left the fuel cap off (and I just realized that it is still off and it is raining outside ), and I also pulled the fuel return off to see what was coming out of it and I am getting alot of flow through it. I feel like it is more than it should be.

You can see in these pictures that I realized my old injection pump was very gaulded up. I used all the parts from my new parts pump except for the case. My timing piston was gaulded in its bore so I took some 1000 grit wet paper and smoothed the bore out.

Old Used

New Used

Here are links to the videos. The truck is going slow because I don't have the gas pedal hooked up yet so it was just idling.

Daddy and I also started working on the panel alittle also.

I would reuse mine if I could get some more hookups to my gauge lights. They broke off and I can't figure out how to reattach them.

Its funny you say that abt the dash lights. My american autowire harness came with new connectors and sockets for the bulbs. It looked like too much work tho so i Reused the orriginal ones and shrink butted them to the new harness. Cheater . Lol. Call AAW . They make the connectors. maby you can just buy a pak of em.

Re: 1955 12 Valve NAPCO Clone

Here is the part #
http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/more...398&cc=1326259

When you search for it on Rock Auto search this like this

Chevrolet>1956>Truck>3.8L 235cid L6>Electrical Lamp and Socket> Instrument Cluster Lamp Socket

Hope this helps. I might end up with them and they don't work. If you wanna wait i'll let you know how they fit and work.

Re: 1955 12 Valve NAPCO Clone

Thank you, during lunch I stopped by NAPA with a part number I found Sunday (they are closed) and they had one on the shelf. I posted on the main board. It was $7 but I figured I'd pay that for shipping from out of town.
