Re: 1950 Chevy 3600 - Bumper Punchin'

Had some time over the last couple days to get the motor mounts mocked up. I like how it sits, however, it looks like it needs to go back 3" to clear the radiator. I need to do some more measuring on, but I've marked out what i plan to cut in the firewall. I'm not overly excited about cutting it up as I don't want to cut out to much, but then again i don't want the valve covers or dizzy to hit.

here are the pics:

Re: 1950 Chevy 3600 - Bumper Punchin'

uhg.. damn not being able to edit.

***********************************************************

i should have 29" of space, firewall to radiator. with the water pump on i'm looking at about 30.5" or 31". that doesn't include a fan or spacer. It looks like i can move the radiator forward 2" with no issues with the hood or latch, and can run a pusher fan. Gonna sleep on it before i make any final decisions.

Re: 1950 Chevy 3600 - Bumper Punchin'

so what's new... well, the fire wall is cut and back together, the rear frame is boxed as much as i can for now, the clip got fitted last night and it looks like the radiator might work as is(with the firewall notch) and the front suspension was dry fitted to see what size tire i'll be able to run.

Looks like a 15x8 with 5" BS running a 235/65/15 will work just fine. the bottom of the fender is going to need to be trimmed, but it's all under the the truck, so no one will know. that tire should leave me with about 1.25" of ground to running board clearance.

I also measured for a steering column. Looks like a 30" column will be ideal. I'm considering getting an Ididit plain steel column with tilt, but i'm going to look at the swap meet this weekend to see what i find.

Other than that, I'm waiting on parts from scotts to move any further forward.

Oh, and i ordered an alum radiator and a full wiring harness this week. My wallet hurts!

ordered my wheels today. 16x10 with a 6.5" BS and 16x8 with a 5" BS. won't be here for another 4 weeks though... I'll keep you in suspense on what they are.

Also order an ididit column with tilt.

Re: 1950 Chevy 3600 - Bumper Punchin'

btw, tire shopping sucks! what online vendors do you use for tires?

I'm looking for a pair of 295's and 245's in either a 15 or 16 (i still have time to change my wheel order from the 16 to a 15). I would prefer to not have raised white letters, and want to have a decent side wall. fronts need to be 26.5-28" tall and the rears should be the same or slightly larger.

I was looking at a set of cooper cobras, but they have RWL.

For a 295 /15 you will have to go to a drag radial or pro trac . I think . If you don't like the rwl put em to the inside like mine problem solved . Bob

I was wondering about that... it's been a long time since i've seen a RWL tire in person. couldn't remember if they are RWL on both sides or not.

well, with that said, i may go with the coopers then.

Looking good Ivel! Wish I had the time/money etc to make that kind of progress. One of these days I'll have to stop by while I'm in Waukee and see it in person.

Yup, like Grimss said, they are Scotts Hotrods arms. All of my front and rear suspension came from Scotts, along with an Ididit column and under cab brake booster/MC/Pedal setup.

Re: 1950 Chevy 3600 - Bumper Punchin'

Ok, so i have some picture catch up to do. Lets jump right in.

Last weekend Bob68327 was able to make it over and weld in my front cross member. While he was over he also replaced my garage breakers with 20amp breakers cause he didn't like the welder popin the breaker every 15 seconds. It was something on my list, but I'm not a fan of sticking my fingers in the breaker box.

anyways, the cross member is welded in real good now and will probably out live the rest of the truck. Here's an action shot i got of bob:

After he took off that day, i got to painting my front suspension parts. Lots of taping and cutting, but in the end they came out pretty good.

While those were drying i broke out the can of POR15 and got the front frame and firewall painted up. I put two coats on since it wasn't real rusty and I'm very happy with how it turned out. after driving it a bit the shine will go away and will be more like a normal frame paint.

So the first part of this week was slow due to parts not getting here as expected. I could only do one side of the front brakes, but i got that all buttoned up tonight. Just need to tighten down the ball joints and control arms and it'll be done. I want to wait until i get the other side done before i do that. Parts should be here tomorrow, so that should get done then.

deflated

inflated

So tonight we decided to drag the bed in and figure out where the rear axle should go. I thought about also grabbing the front clip for this shot, but it wasn't worth the effort. to much real work to do to be dicking around.

Prior to getting the bed on we had placed the axle where it was prior to taking off the bed. from one of the frame holes it sat 12.5" back. after doing some measuring and eyeballing we hung a line and decided to move the axle back .5" at ride height. I expect that when aired out, we'll be about .25" forward of where it sits at ride height. btw, the string in the shot is at the measured center of the wheel well. due to the forward radius of the fender, I don't think it wold look right if the wheel was dead center.

So then we pulled the bed and started mocking up the step notches. Nothing to complex here, so i'll just show the shots

Re: 1950 Chevy 3600 - Bumper Punchin'

And for the alignment of the axle, i setup the notch so that it was forward of center by about .5". The plan is for ride height to be the position where the driveshaft is the longest, therefore, the arch should bring it forward when aired out.

So then i got to work cutting out the notches. Well, my cut off wheel decided to retire for good just as i was getting into the meat of the second hole, so that ended the night. Here's where it sits right now. And yeah, i have jack stands in front of and behind the frame cut on both sides of the frame.

Did i mention that the notch was a lot bigger than i had planned?? It's cool though. I'd rather have too big of a notch than to small. It's gonna look sweet when it's done.

The next few days are going to be crazy. Since i wasn't able to get much work done last week i ordered in a bunch of parts. Wheels are on their way, American Autowire wiring harness showed up today (it's very intimidating looking!), radiator showed up over the weekend and my column and missing suspension parts should be here tomorrow (right Jeph? )

So tomorrow we're planning to finish the notch i started tonight, do the final mock up of the motor mounts and get them all welded up and get the tranny mount done.

Friday my brother is coming down to help me with the motor so we should have that all taken care of by saturday night. I highly doubt we'll be starting it this weekend. (crap! i need to order a mini starter!). While all that is going on I also plan to get the rear suspension all mocked up and hopefully bob68327 can do the final welding on sunday.

Hell, by the end of the weekend we may just have a roller!!

crap! almost forgot. I also got the door latches partially in this week. Passenger side is done (needs a little adjusting) and the driver side is nearly done.

What a PITA getting it to latch correctly!! especially since the drivers side door didn't close worth a crap before i took it appart.
