Re: Project Old Blue, 1965 C10, Rebuild Version 2010

Just thought I would say this truck is still waiting its turn. I hope to get at it again after the first of the year. Need to sell a couple of vehicles though...

My plan is to get it running and driving before touching any of the body work. I believe I have everything I need to do that except for a drive shaft. I will most likely get a new one made locally. I still need to finish some of the fab work on the rear suspension, especially the shock mounts.

Hope everyone has a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! I have only 8 more working days this year!! Then I am off till the 6th of January!

Building a small, high rpm engine with the perfect bore, stroke and rod ratio is very impressive.

I'm 1 panhard bar & rear end mount away from finishing fab work on my dually. Rattle can everything, install bed, & finish back half of exhaust. Looks like I'll ressurect the 64 build/thread in the spring.

Karl, glad to know I anit the only East Texas yokel on the broad. Only thing I know about Longview, is Eastman Chemical via working there 3+ years. Tyler to Longview drive got old FAST!!!!
Your truck will get its day. At least you have a project with good history and passing it on to your sons. My grand dads '82 was stolen never to be seen again ( he had a '60 f100 but that was not my taste in truck)... But I am glad it was stolen honestly, it prevented a huge fight among the 6 grandsons...
Merry Christmas to you and yours from right down the road!!!

Re: Project Old Blue, 1965 C10, Rebuild Version 2010

I did not think it was going to take this long to get the decision made to be able to move forward. Its been 4 weeks and still not resolved...

In the mean time, I have been collecting parts and looking for parts that I need. I am on the fence about a couple of parts at this point. One of which is the frame. Since this truck is mostly original to the way it came from my Grandpa, I am reluctant to cut up the frame for a few mods I want to make that would be hard to change back later.

I found a complete LWB frame and suspension for about $200, but I would have to drive 3.5 hours to get it. It solves the frame mod issue and gets me a 12 bolt housing that I do not have. What do you guys think? The mods are basically, raise the front crossmember like it did in Korbin's truck, do a rear frame mod to raise the rails up 4" like Rob did to his shop truck JT, and then do the LWB to SWB conversion. Once all that would be done, I would get (or build) an X brace around the trailing arm suspension like I have seen Porterbuilt make....

The end result for the exterior will be a shop truck theme in the original light blue with a white grill and bumper and this logo on the doors in white:

That is the farm that my family has and where I learned to drive that truck before Grandpa gave it to me. The farm has been in our family for 164 years and my sister and I are now the 5th or 6th generation owners.

I think Grandpa would be fine doing what ever you do with the truck as long as you keep it. build it the way YOU want

We went up to GG's at TMS on Saturday, saw Tiffany but missed Keith, not sure if you where there or not, if so sorry we missed catching up. Not sure if my current budget will allow me to "fix" my dilemma all @ once..LOL.

I did find a complete rear end housing with trailing arms and stock springs and all the retainers and bolts for $100 bucks from a guy in Hurst. We picked it up on Sat. on our way back home. I got the housing all stripped down minus taking out the pinion on Sunday. I will try to post some pictures in the next day or two. One brake drum was completely worn through! it came off in two pieces...

Re: Project Old Blue, 1965 C10, Rebuild Version 2010

Cleared another hurdle this weekend on my way to getting my stuff in order around my house to make room for working on this one. "Bubba" got sold and will be delivered to the new owner the weekend of April 12th. My parts collection is growing for this one and looks like I am down to just a few items to get it running and on the road (no rust repair or paint and body at this time).

Re: Project Old Blue, 1965 C10, Rebuild Version 2010

Here are my short term plans for now, with notes on what I still need to get for each step.

1. Install PBFab Lower Forward Arms, modiified McGaughy's Drop spindles for C5 front brakes, 13" C5 front brakes, No Limit rack & pinion conversion, PBFab Addco 1.25" sway bar, 3/4T front springs with 2 coils removed and KYB Gas-A-Just shocks.

2. Install stock 12 bolt rear. Install 4:10 gears, C5 rear brakes with parking brake in the hat of the rotor. Use the existing 4" drop springs and 2" drop blocks and CPP C-Notch.
- Need to redrill the axles for 5 lug and machine the regioster to 2.78" for the C5 rotor.
- Need to finish my custom Panhard Bar.
- Need to design and fabricate rear shock mounts.
- Flip the Trailing Arm mounts on the cross member.
- Need new bearings and shims to install gears/rebuild axle.
- Need to clean and paint axle housing.

More to come...

Re: Project Old Blue, 1965 C10, Rebuild Version 2010

3. Install Power Brake booster and new Master Cylinder and Prop Valve to work with the C5 brakes.
- Possible need to fab new mount plate for booster.
- Might need to modify flex lines from MC/Prop Valve to Frame tabs.

4. Install 5.3/4L60e set up, using Spectre Performance Intake tube/filter (#9900) and Headman Muscle Rod LS swap headers (#45666). Re-work stock harness myself. Mount PCM and Fuse block under the hood. I am still working on ideas as to where to mount them.
- Need Frame/Engine mounts. Leaning toward CPP’s new Sheet Metal Frame Mounts #6372MP-SM ($159), and there sliding mounts. Not sure yet, may fab my own…
- Trans cross member…CPP, PBFab, I may fab my own…
- May need to do some fab work to mount the radiator and oil coolers to the core support.
- Need Fuel Pump for use in an ’87 sending unit/tank. I plan to mount the tank in the front of the bed with an old barn wood box built to hide it. ($100)
- Drive Shaft, have one may need to be modified for length…

5. Install Bench Seat and Seat Belts.
- Need to decide on reworking stock seat or just use one that I have from an ’82 and throw a blanket over it…

6. Make it street legal.
- Headlights, Taillights, Turn Signals, Horn, Wipers, etc…
