Re: Project "49 No Buck$"
Thinking about cruising up to the Billetproof event in Washington come June after the truck is cruise ready. Any NW club want to adopt a a So Cal car junkie for the weekend in June? Could be a fun 1100 mile road trip!

Re: Project "49 No Buck$"
Off the truck subject for just a minute... Went up to help my dad set up his car in the Boise Roadster Show (his first big show of anykind). Here it is after we had it all cleaned and setup sorry all you full on show guys, it's a street car so no huge carpet or display stuff (dad made the stantions with some rods and pistons he scored from Dennis Radfords' Pro Mod car)! The car won it's class and we enjoyed the moment!

Re: Project "49 No Buck$"
Now back to the truck... The frame is ALL done! Here's the down and dirty engine block (steam cleaned inside and out, quick hone, new cam bearings and freeze plugs. Waiting for rings and bearings so I can put together the short block this week! Heads are being finished up, so I can get the motor installed pretty soon! Want to get the whole drivetrain in, before installing the cab and bed. Been looking for an old ice chest to put in the back of the truck and scored this from a guy I did some striping for a couple days ago. An old BROWN even, Coleman ice chest that the inside is real nice and he was going to toss it! Striped it up last night and it's ready to bolt in!

Re: Project "49 No Buck$"
Here's something simple I just whipped up! I hate the stock Chevy dust caps on the rotors. They won't work with how I want the look. I found some trailer caps (kinda look like early style caps) at a shop and grabbed 4 of them at $2 a piece. A chrome guy owed me a little favor, so I had him chrome these to match the wheels unlike the stock zinc coating (stock on the left new ones on the right) Now the new ones are too small to fit into the rotor. No problem! I cut the lip off the factory one and slid it onto the new cap (it fits snug too) a few tack welds around the perimeter and Bam, looks like new/old!

Re: Project "49 No Buck$"
I'm almost done with the engine, but figured I better get a couple things done before it gets dropped into the frame. The firewall looked pretty bad on the truck (Peeling paint, holes, etc.) and my friend Alex was on my case to make it look as nice as the engine will. So ok, ugghh... time to fix the firewall! After welding up 58, yes 58 freakin' holes I took it all down to bare metal with a DA sander and a wire wheel on a drill for the tough to reach areas. A little bondo to make it all smooth. I'll have it ready to prime shortly and then paint it semi-gloss/flat black. After all is dry, I'm going to pinstripe the snot out of it and make it really look the part!

Re: Project "49 No Buck$"
..... F Y I, on the firewall the only holes I did not address were the four bolts in the upper corner of the drivers side!
When the clear was dry, guess what looked like **** were the four bolts in the upper corner. They needed about 3 taps with a hammer and dolly and you would have never see the problem !!

Re: Project "49 No Buck$"
Yeah, those bolt holes kinda suck but they hold the steering column and cowl vent brackets, so what are you gonna do? lol

Re: Project "49 No Buck$"
The bolts can be removed, they are serrated, a hammer will remove them and you can dress the indents, when finished with paint I used 1/4 and 5/16th stainless carriage bolts and put the heads out in the engine compartment. I did polish the heads so now all you see is the DENTS !!!!

Re: Project "49 No Buck$"
I had some like that on mine and I did two things. One way was to cut off the heads making them a stud welded to the firewall. Second is to replace with elevator bolts welded to the inside of the firewall in same location. Firewall does look nice.

Re: Project "49 No Buck$"
I honestly didn't care too much about those bolts. If you look at the hinges and bottom of the hood, it's all 60+ yr. old crap! I was just filling holes I didn't need and trying to clean up the back just a little. It's still just a beater/driver! The striping will distract all the other mess!

Re: Project "49 No Buck$"
Sprayed it yesterday morning and just finished striping it a few minutes ago. Looks a little better than it did! I'm hoping my heads get finished up today so I can button the motor up and get it in!

Re: Project "49 No Buck$"
Went to look at a really cool underdash old AC unit with my friend Alex yesterday for his truck and stumbled onto these awesome mid 30's Cadillac Lasalle gauges! The guy ended up giving them to me and I love the old art deco look to them! I need to find some convex 5" glass and a 12 volt quartz clock conversion or send it out if anybody knows who does it. Also need to get new guts for the speedo. Any ideas where to find stuff like that? What do you think? I'm stoked!

Re: Project "49 No Buck$"
So cool, love the transmission settings. I would think that the speedo drive would be the same as other gm cars from the era or one could be adapted. Hardest part will probably be finding the glass.

Re: Project "49 No Buck$"
I think it looks awesome. You scored big time. I hear that it is best to just put the quartz conversion in the clock. I guess the older clocks didn't keep time very well.

Re: Project "49 No Buck$"
The gauges are from a 37 lasalle! I've already started restoring them and they're going to to look awesome. Hard to believe how nice they are being that old.

They look cool. I'd probably F up the clock trying to turn it into a tachometer. Good luck on the resto.

Re: Project "49 No Buck$"
More stuff on the never-ending, cheap-ass, hot rod truck! Last week after discussing it over with my friend Alex, We decided it still needed more striping under the hood to tie in with the orange on the motor Looking better, still may add more!
