I envy you for bein' at the paint fume stage in a bit. I see your door layin there waitin to get sprayed. My doors just taunt me. Weld/grind/beat on us. You ain't gettin paint anytime soon.

Thanks Bomp! I envy your ambition in stretching a truck cab!

I still have a bit to do, but not all that much. Finished the passenger door tonight and got a good start on the driver's. It's pretty clean so I expect to have that done in an hour or two. Fenders are near perfect with only a very small spot of rot on the passenger's down by the bumper. Hood is PERFECT except I gotta detail the underside. Cowl and grille are also perfect and went to the blaster's so that's really about it with respect to bodywork. I still have a heap of little bits to strip tho. If I had only made my own blast box!!! Should be busy this weekend, like I'm killin snakes!

You have the right engine stands for a small block. as for the z-bar (prob has other names) it's easier to show ya

Thanks for checkin John! I threw my stands on there and it looks like there's only one way they'll bolt up??? There are extra holes in the frame rails and the x-member but there ain't no way I could jockey my stands to fit in a different set. Must be different stands for different applications??? I guess that's not such a big deal if I don't have the right stands. I just don't wanna move the bell x-member if I don't have to. What's the "z bar" you're talking about? I don't recall anything like that on mine. Glad to hear you're good with the bell starter too. I'm thinking I'll just stick with what I've got. What about the bell dust cover? That fit up well for you?

Man the mess that bodywork creates drove me nuts in my garage. that's a nice shop you have.

Thanks man! Once this project is wrapped up I've got some great things in store for my man cave. Building lean-to's on both sides outside with half of one enclosed. That'll get the bikes, mowers, etc... outta there. Nice steel table for welding and such, more cabinets, lighting and a crane!

Seems like there's always something going on in there in addition to the truck. It don't take long and $hit is scattered. Drives me when it gets that way.

You're not working this weekend? Gonna get any truck time?

Not working but my kid has a couple games. I'm hoping to get out in the garage tommorow and turn on Talladega and mess around with it some.

Dude, sorry to hear about the flyaway part. It doesnt look to bad though, at least its not rusty. nice pic of the shop. makes me feel like I'm workin in a one car garage lol. I need to do another good cleanup, I just keep tellin myself it's organized chaos. Looks like you making some good progress, keep killin it !

I was goin like mad yesterday then my old pal showed up for a visit. It was good to see him and the kids. Got the motorbikes out for a bit, but nothing painted. We did get the fun-dome done tho. Painting some $hit today!

At times no matter how hard you try to keep a nice part nice the dent gods are out to put in there two dents worth.
Your totally Killin it on body work and snakes too. Nice sky view of the layout in your shop!

On a side note: are you going to the PIR swapmeet on Oct 13?

I'm about there. That inner fixed up easy and actually looks better than the other now. Gonna clean up here first, scuff them wheels and start reading the paint data sheets. Man I hope I don't eff up this part! Film at 11:00

Oh, and my damn receiver/amp took a $hit so I'm without tunes!!!! Now I can hear them little voices in my head tellin me I'm gonna eff this up! May have to run to the pawn shop to see what they have!

Johnny is officially a painter, but things could have gone better!

Things I learned today....

1) Spraying grey primer over sand blasted parts with less than perfect light and less than perfect eyes SUCKS. Some contrast would've helped this ol' boy.
2) Spraying parts that you've hung by wire from the rafters SUCKS. They spin, you dance around shooting at the dry spots and miss, you hold them with your hand and screw up what you've shot while you shoot yourself in the arm....
3) Epoxy primer is like effin SPRAY GLUE!
4) Some things from Harbor Freight are OK while others SUCK. The little baby regulator I bought to hang off my gun was awful, but the gun itself was pretty sweet. Threw on a different regulator that I already had and things smoothed WAY out.
5) Those rubber gloves that I have tons of and hate to wear cuz my hands sweat.....WEAR THEM! My hands are NASTY and I've scrubbed the bugeezus out of them. I'll be sanding them off in the shower tomorrow with that grinding rock / sharpening stone Wifey has in there.
6) My air compressor(s) will work sweet. I have two in parallel with the pressure switches set for a lead/lag arrangement and the backup never even kicked on. I installed a big filter/regulator at the tanks that caught a bunch of water, but there was still moisture at the end of my line. I used an inline filter/separator at the gun, so hopefully not much made it through.
7) My shop-vac ventilation system kicked a$$ but I bet the neighbor hates it. It's loud as all get-out and I had her full-whack from about 3:00 til 10:00.
8) This crap is MESSY!!! One drop smears a long damn ways. Way worse than oil.

The epoxy went down super slick! I was thinking I was a pro, THEN I mixed the color. Major orange peel boys!!!! I think the $hit was too thick but wasn't sure if I could reduce it with laquer thinner???? It's a single stage urethane that came with just the color and a hardener??? I fiddle phuked with the air pressure and spray pattern / intensity and got OK results, but I'm still effin bummed. Some pieces came out nice while others I hate (like the damn wheels!!!). There's NO WAY I'll spray Butternut on the body panels if I can't get this sorted out. Overall I'm stoked and pissed......... This crap is expensive to experiment with and winter is coming!!!

9) When you make them little S-hooks out of nails to hang your spinny parts from the wires, make SURE they're S's and NOT Z's. Otherwise, while you're pretty little parts are spinning circles cuz you are trying to spray them they will slip off the little end of the nail and fall to the ground. F-bomb, touch the wet paint, try to "smooth" it out with your BARE finger, looks like H-E-L-L.... Get the picture?

Just went out for a peek and to stoke the fire. Been about an hour since spray and things flattened out pretty good, but still damn orange peel. Not as bad as the wet pic. I'll put up more tomorrow cuz its now time to hit the sack. Better leave the pants in the laundry room or we'll wake up high. Peeeeewheeeeeew!!

Haaaaahaaaaaa! BTDT! Welcome to the club and congratulations on stepping Over, dear brother. I dont do NUTHIN without my gloves. Epoxy is like glue, but it's great when it's dry. The trick is not to psych yourself out. Wait till you shoot that yellow, your contrast goes away and you have to take it on faith that youre actually shooting what you think you are! Think slow, don't hurry. I have done everything you just posted multiple times, so don't sweat it. Wait till you Wetsand dirt out of your base coat with the Bud Light you're drinking! Looks good, keep it up!

I would also recommend base clear paint on the nice parts. I have nO luck a tall with single stage. Also please please reconsider the shop vac vent. One spark and it's way bad juju. Stop by a hvac place and ask about a used squirrel cage. Preferably with the motor out of the path of the airflow.

Hmmmm... the "flash back" is a scary thought. Already had a doozey BBQ accident this summer!

BTDT???? Is this a painter's acronym for what I'm doing wrong?

Reall think I'd do better with the BC/CC huh? I've never done any color sanding or buffing and thought the SS would mean shoot it and it's done. If it's all orange peely tho......

I popped in there this morning for a quick peek and the stuff looks WAY better. It did flatten out pretty good.

Laid down good! BTDT= Been there, Done That. I always go bc/cc because something ALWAYS goes bad. Easy fix, a little sandy sandy, it's all good! Like I say, I'm a so so painter, but a HELL of a polisher. Long as I can halfway get it on right, it's all good! Like I said, just relax. Know things are gonna go in the crapper, and be calm when they do. It'll all be good, in the end. You've made the first jump off the cliff, it's all downhill from here!
