Re: "The Ayatollah of Rusty Hole'a 1987 SWB 6.0 4L80E

Thanks guys!

I built a cab tip stand today and got started on wire brushing the underside of the cab and then rewelding my seams from below.

Looks awesome so far Gordon! I love the attention to detail... the LQ9 tops it off very nicely! Can't wait to see it driving!

Re: "The Ayatollah of Rusty Hole'a 1987 SWB 6.0 4L80E

Thanks guys...but my welding still sucks!! lol

It is a bit better though then when I started.

My only advice to someone starting out doing rust repair is do the easiest things first & keep playing with the settings until you find the sweet spot for whatever metals you're welding.

I'll try to update pics tonight if I get done what I'm working on today.

Re: "The Ayatollah of Rusty Hole'a 1987 SWB 6.0 4L80E

Now today I've been getting the cab ready to put my bucket seats into it...it's alot of work!!

There are some good threads out there regarding this so I won't repeat the same stuff. I did extend my seat tabs so there is more of a slope in my seats b/c I'm 6'2" and I need the leg room.

Just more cleaning and little things today....fixed rear cab mount nut as it was spinning when I took out the bolt.

Should be sanding tomorrow and painting the floor / underside with POR15 by tomorrow night.

Re: "The Ayatollah of Rusty Hole'a 1987 SWB 6.0 4L80E

I POR-15'd my cab floor and undercab. Plus behind the door hinges.

POR-15 is VERY runny, stinks to high heaven and will not wash off with varsol. So wear gloves, a respirator of some sort and wash off any that gets on your skin right away with LOTS of varsol!!!.

I tore a hole in my glove and now have black spots on my fingers & hand --- perfect for my meetings tomorrow, they are going to think I'm a leper....

It is drying glossy, I thought it dries kind of a matte finish or satin...will match my Tremclad gloss black frame though. Tremclad was alot thicker to apply, but it stunk about the same amount as the POR-15.

Re: "The Ayatollah of Rusty Hole'a 1987 SWB 6.0 4L80E

Thanks Dusty...getting it ready for body work and paint so not much to update these days.

Motor color is Ford Engine Red.

Dirty Dingo mounts cleared just fine for me without notching anything. I liked them alot because you can adjust how they sit forward and back.

Thanks for the tip, I was going to use POR15 but will use Ospho or similar product instead. An elderly fellow down here who's a lifelong hot rod builder and resident highly recommended that I use Ospho for rust treatment. Not fond of messy stuff and fumes.

Lookin' good. Slow progress on my cab, almost done cleaning the pookie along the pinch weld seam that goes around the windshield, solid and mostly clean except for a couple of spots, easy fixes.

They are for the 73-87. Just call up Brent there (I think that was his name) and they'll get you whatever you need. They were good to deal with.

lol...I'm going to be gone for work next Saturday until July 15th more or less.

I wanted to be driving it (even if it was only in primer) by August 25 as I found the truck's in service paper behind the dash that was dated August 25, 1986 & I thought having it back on the road for it's 25th anniversary would be cool.

No way that will happen now.

Re: "The Ayatollah of Rusty Hole'a 1987 SWB 6.0 4L80E

Well its been a while since I updated the thread. I've been on the road working for a few weeks and when I got home the plan was to get the truck ready to paint next week...then I discovered a rookie problem I made: I didn't check the doors enough to see that they lined up the same on both sides.

So, I was just going to buy a donor cab and do the switch, but the guy I made a deal with for the donor cab flaked on me and reneg'd the deal we had. :-(

That left me to recut my cab and reweld me patches. Should be done this week on that but it throws out my schedule to paint the truck next week while my wife is away. The magazine picture is what I"m trying to get my gaps to look like now.

Good news is my dash arrived from Chuck and it looks very good! I got some extra vinyl too to do the headliner when I get to that point.

That is a good looking dash! Could you post some more close ups of all the seams? I was going to sew a cover for my self and was trying to decide on the best locations for the seams. The area that you have in the picture is the area I was having problems in. Yours is clean and simple, looks great! Thanks.

Yes they are 16's.

I'm out of town for work, but most of the product numbers can be found in Glock's build.

Or you could just search online for 1987 Chevy truck tanks that have the splash baffles in them to keep fuel around the pump.
