Re: What Did You Do With Your Truck Today ?

Today I drove my truck. Have spent the last year working on the truck. I now have a new 261 engine with a 5 speed transmission. It has been a long time working on the truck in my garage. Winter is coming. Trying to enjoy the truck before the weather changes.

Re: What Did You Do With Your Truck Today ?

I got my front axle back from Sid@dropped axles! One of the nicest people I've ever delt with! I also bought Posie 2 leaf slider springs from him and had him upgrade to tie rods and he tapered the holes. I just had him refurbish my original axle ,new kingpins, sandblasted, looks like a new suspension!!
Well, I installed all of the above yesterday and looks great!! I hope to get the truck on the ground soon to push it out and clean the garage! ; )

Re: What Did You Do With Your Truck Today ?

It's a great feeling to see the pieces of the puzzle come together! Tonight my husband has a business meeting, so I think I can sandblast the disc brake brackets and some other pieces, paint them and have that ready for install later. You know, putting the springs and axle went back together pretty easily, hardest part was getting the axle elevated into place, but a couple tie downs worked really well!,, but so nice working with clean parts!!!! ; )

I deleted your photo just to shorten my response:

I've been thinking of doing the EXACT same package of front suspension mods with mine. No judgment on what others do but I just can't see myself cutting my frame in half.

APologies for so many questions but:

Is Sid's price competitive with buying SuperSliders directly from Posies? What's the total drop you got from the combined springs & axle drop?
What about modifying the pitman arm (& whatever else I haven't thought of) to eliminate bumpsteer; did you buy that too?
I don't know what your, "tapering the holes" comment refers to, can you explain?

And finally, if you're comfortable posting it, what was the total price for doing this package of work?

Can you post more pictures of the total front suspension package. Any/all would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance, Dan

Re: What Did You Do With Your Truck Today ?

Pitman arm? I'm going with the Saginaw setup from a popular vendor which includes the pitman arm. As for the tapered holes, he removed the tie rod things and tapered the holes that the new updated tie rods will work. I'll take more photos this evening just for you! ; ). Maybe you could send me your email address, much easier to send photos!!

Re: What Did You Do With Your Truck Today ?

I got the wood in place for the new flatbed. Need to take it back off and add a support under the bed in the center though. Sourced some fender wells and stake pockets. Next weekend is a biker debochery weekend so no love to the truck for a week.
Bed is Red Oak ply, looks good pics to follow when I get home form work tonight.

That REALLY looks good. What did you paint it with? How long on a wire wheel did that take?

Thanks Dan! I probably spent around 10 hours combined with the flapper disc and assorted wire brushes on a drill to clean the frame up, but my back would argue that it was more After using Eastwood rust converter where it was needed, I used Rust-Oleum black hammered from a rattle-can. Says it can be applied over rust and doesn't need primer. Turned out nice, and I really like the look, but the jury is out on how durable it is.

I saw another guy use Rustoleum black hammertone from a rattle can on his frame and it looked outstanding. I actually thought it looked like powdercoat and he claimed the more you put on it, the better it masked minor imperfections. I didn't see it but another guy used Rusto hammertone black from a can nad said it flowed out very nicely and left no brush marks so I think its become a somewhat known quantity. Thanks for the info.

Re: What Did You Do With Your Truck Today ?

Got the passenger side floor and kick panel in, so the floor is done. Going to cover it with rust preventative paint and the cover it with bed liner; and undercoat the bottom side.

I started on the brackets for my lower control arms. I am about two thirds done on the x member and pivot brackets.

Re: What Did You Do With Your Truck Today ?

finnished tubbing the box, rounded the rear corners, filled the front edge and filled the steak pockets, was a bit surprized at the amount of filler in some spots to fill dents, whoever did the body work on this years ago was a master with the bondo but obviously didn't have a clue how to use a hammer and dolly
