Re: Legacy build

It hit 95* outside, and my .060 over motor was not cohabitating well with the electric fans. 225* on the motor, and 250* on the trans. It was time for drastic measures fast! I need a cooling system that will operate well at 115* outside temps.

First, I ordered some goodies from Summit! Aluminum high flow water pump, High flow thermostats, 19" 6 blade fan, thermostatic fan clutch, and an aluminum DIY fan shroud.

Second, I moved the trans cooler from the radiator to 2 plate style coolers. Made some brackets to mount them in front of the radiator.

Third, installed the summit goodies. I had my friend Jack tig up the shroud, it came out good.

Result, 180-185 motor temps ( 180 stat), and 150* +/ - trans temps. Time will tell if it can handle 115*, or not. B&M oil cooler on the way!!!

I'm cruising Central all day today, in 100* heat! If that won't kill it, it stands a chance of handling the really hot stuff.

Yeah, I need to do something about the burb. When it gets to be in the 105º+ range, it's not too happy running down the freeway.

I still haven't decided if I'm going to the cruise today. If I do, I'll look for ya!

Well it was 104 in the valley yesterday, so how did it do? Pass of fail?

Failed! Slow creep from 180*, highest I have let it go was 215*. Spent yesterday jetting a little richer. I also found a bad vacuum advance diaphragm, that was good last week. I will get that replaced today, then play with the timing.

Re: Legacy build

I believe that I have thrown enough money at the cooling issue. The temp finally calmed down and found a happy place at 185* (for now).

I took it for a nice long drive in the country. Just like kids, they don't stay clean for long.

Have you tried adding any of the cooling system additives that change the surface tension of the water like redline waterwetter or royal purple purple ice?

http://www.redlineoil.com/Products.aspx?pcid=10

http://www.royalpurple.com/product-c...olant-additive

You can get a few more degrees of temp reduction with them. I have used both and they both work well.

It has a mixture of water, Water Wetter, 10% glycol in it. Seems to have helped some.

Adding the oil cooler, and the distributor made the largest difference.

Thanks,

Now that it will go more than 20 miles, I want to get some more pics of it. There are tons of places I want to take it.

I'm committed to make it to the Brothers show in Anaheim Ca. If it will do 300 miles of desert in July, It will go anywhere.

Re: Legacy build

Thanks everybody!

It's been a little irritating that I personally took a truck that was incredibly reliable for 500,000 miles, and turned it into a fair weather pansy

I am looking foreward to going to the show! Me and the truck will be there! Or the possibility that I will be there and the truck will be towed back to PHX, with a hole in the hood from piston, rod, ect. I hope not...

I am going to put some serious miles on it before the show. I have 28 days off between now and then. If it does not behave, I will just simply... swap motors.

Re: Legacy build

It will be fine.
Just be vigilant during what I call the shake down period, just drive her as often as you can just like you would any vehicle. During this time any buggy stuff should present it's self, and hopefully it's just a quick adjustment and you're off again.

Here's to another 500,000

Thanks,

The shroud is a kit from Summit. They make many sizes, and are well built. You can use the brackets or weld it like I did. Very nice product.

Make sure to measure yours, this is just an example.

Re: Legacy build

I took the truck out for a drive yesterday to see what it want's to run at. It was 104* outside. I took it on a 40 mile trip around town, and it seems to sit right at 210*. I jumped on the highway and cruised 65-70 and it still sat at 210*. I kept going to to hill outside of town called Sunset Point . The hill is about 8 miles of 6% grade. I flogged it up the hill at 65, and it stayed at 210*. If it wants to run at 210, so be it! I'm happy!

Re: Legacy build

Update,

I just was not happy with the cooling issue, and it started vapor locking. After a lot of head scratching and staring at it, I made some changes.

The six blade fan from Summit is on the "did not work pile". The five blade Blazer fan is installed with a severe duty clutch. HUGE DIFFERENCE! Until the crimped seam on the clutch started leaking, and the fan slung all of the goo in every possible nook and cranny of the under hood. Got a replacement clutch, and will try again. It runs 180-185 with the air on high, 110 Outside temp.

Added an electric pusher fuel pump, by the tank.

I'm taking the new clutch for a serious flogging today. If it fails, I will try a different brand. The one I have is Haden.

Whilst I was de-gooing my motor (nasty stuff), I decided the raised carburetor looked out of place. Not being able to lower it, I raised the motor up to it. I think they look sexy!

Before and after...

I was going to ask you how the truck has been holding up in this heat. Sounds like you're still making progress on getting everything worked out. I like those valve covers too!

Re: Legacy build

I took the truck out and flogged the crud out of it. The thermometer said 108 outside. I ran it at 70 down the freeway for about 20 miles, and it stayed at 190. got off of the freeway and hit 12 miles of stop and go traffic. It never topped 190, and even dropped to 180 on the stop and go.

Next stop Norco California!
