Re: 72 K20 Cheyenne Super Build

Great looking build!

A couple questions if you don't mind. And no, I'm not going to ask the price of this build. I'm too cheap to do something this nice.

What's the source of those rear tow hooks?

Is there something special to mate the 700R4 to the NP205? Special output shaft?

Since the drivetrain looks installed; did you move the front cross-member forward? How close to the front axle is it?

Did you get an answer to the skid plate? Mine look like this:

TIA

Hey thanks!

Those rear hooks came from a board member (Blazerman). I haven't seen any offered up for sale for a while now and do not believe these are still in production. You have to add metal to the frame in order to make use of these hooks but I believe those offered through GM dealers were very similar if not identical.

The 700r4 does need a special output shaft to mate it with the NP205. This was added by Bowtie Overdrives when I ordered the tranny but can be had separately from Advanced Adapters.

The motor mounts went forward ~1.75 inches to accommodate the 700r4. Good question on clearance - I wouldn't want the oil pan to bottom out on the front diff. I meant to check the clearance but forgot - I'll snap a pic next time I'm at the shop and post it up.

For the skid plate I'm using an auto tranny x-member and will remove the brackets that affix it to the upper frame, which I'm told is basically what the OEM x-member is.

Re: 72 K20 Cheyenne Super Build

I snapped a couple of pics to show position of the engine x-member/oil pan relative to the front diff. Moving the engine forward for the 700r4 install did result in some increased overlap between the x-member and front diff but the oil pan is clear. Not sure pics show this all that well. Looks like I need a spring clamp on the front diff vent hose.

Thanks fellas!! Hard to believe its been about a year since this build began.

Today I snapped some pics that show the fenders in place. I also took some parts to be zinc phosphate coated (Parkerized) and have example pics of how one of the door strikers turned out. It looks awesome and that's a used striker! The hood latch, misc. bolts and other parts turned out equally as nice. I'm taking the hood hinges down with the next batch of stuff to be coated.

Re: 72 K20 Cheyenne Super Build

Got the correct x-member setup now for the skid plate....GM had some tight tolerances on this fit.

Hey! Not sure on date but shouldn't be more than just a few weeks [hurry up Wes and ship my AC lines ]. I'm dragging things out by Parkerizing pieces that have already been painted (like hood hinges, brackets, etc.). I'm heading up to Alamosa CO with Dirt's72 on Aug 3 to look at a 72 CST Blazer as a potential candidate for the next project. I appreciate you looking. Did you see the one advertised over in Cortez? Didn't look too bad either...

Re: 72 K20 Cheyenne Super Build

Here's a painted GB door for the build with a woodgrain applique from CSM and Chipflyer's SPID. I took pics of the new GB woodgrain next to a non-faded 71 Super GB door (was tempted to part out the woodgrain from this!) and a roll of NOS GM woodgrain for a non-pickup application. Someday I'd like to affix some of this NOS woodgrain to an aluminum panel as it looks closer to what is correct for a truck.

The NOS woodgrain won't come close to the original. It is a transparent roll, and has a goldish transparent look to it. Trust me, I know, I have tons of NOS GM woodgrain rolls that I have experimented with. This is the closest I have ever found. By the way, truck is looking good. Trevor

Trevor thanks! Will you build me a GB door that looks like yours! Bummer on the woodgrain - mine feels thick but it sounds like you're tried several. One day I'll cut off a small piece to experiment with - to me the grain pattern is closer to OEM than the CSM applique.

Pics for Jud. Here's the aftermarket 700r4 lens for the tilt column - not too bad a match. Also tried to show some of the tranny linkage. We used the kit supplied by BTO rather than try to make the OEM linkage work.

Re: 72 K20 Cheyenne Super Build

I took the painted hood hinges and some other parts to get zinc phosphate plating, which is OEM I believe. The hinges look great and the springs were left in place for plating as you see here. Hood will be painted this week. Getting close to completion.
