Re: Finally starting the 68swb fleet

for sure, a few parts are of to the blasters and I may mock up the front end as well just to see it resemble a truck again, maybe light a fire under my ass a bit

Re: Finally starting the 68swb fleet

The PO of my truck is a board member and helping me out huge since day one, but the previous PO before him I would smash into pieces!! My truck has had some work today and after it's all said in done it's working out but I'm still a little heated to say the least. My rear axle is not a 67-68 so my rear 5 lug didn't work and it's an open diff 3.07 12 bolt so not a huge loss but wrecked my plans of having a full roller today. On the plus the PO is moving to a new place so he had a cab stand to lend me until I get the cab welded up with PB firewall kit and minor repairs, and after seeing my situation with the rear diff he also has a 68 panel with a 4.10 posi I can take, so after helping him plant some trees and swap diffs I just have to have it blasted and I'm back in business. The trials and tribulations of old trucks, but when I actually get motivated to work on my old beast I can't stand the little hiccups. having clearance issues as well as pictured any ideas?

Re: Finally starting the 68swb fleet

Looking good....sorry for the hassles...I know about PO's...at least the recent PO is working with you...

....on the clearance issues...maybe the center link on backwards? I have seen that before....can't remember right now from your pics if that's the way it should be but by the tie rod interference I'm guessing you need to flip it....

Re: Finally starting the 68swb fleet

I'm unsure of how else it will work, I flipped the center link end for end, rolled it etc and all the pics I have seen are the same as I have it, checked my bar with my buddies stock 67 they're exact so not bent? the PO is a good buddy so we do a lot of horse trading etc and due to his move he's getting into my build so it's a helpful hand, we'll see I'm going to wait to start clearancing etc until the trucks together a bit more

Re: Finally starting the 68swb fleet

Clearance issue solved, when everything is hand tight it really gives you no idea of how it's going to be after it's all solid, I get flustered easy haha. Pulling my rear out in the morning and swapping for the 68 4.10 posi after we pull it, going to drop the diff, hood hinges, engine perches, and rad support at the blasterstomorrow, so by the weekend I may have a true roller. That fender should be here right away as well, and my porterbuild firewall kit was just paid for

Re: Finally starting the 68swb fleet

Thanks guys, your truck is very nice, the subtle patina is great with the color, my new axle looks terrible but we'll see what it looks like when I open it up tomorrow and pending it's usable after sandblast it will need the special zinc rod to weld the tubes to the cast housing for good measure and one of the perches u bolt holes are elongated so I will fab up some 1/4in plate with new u bolt holes and weld them to the perches and hopefully after some paint this chassis will be back in action. Went wakeboarding the evening so tomorrow I'll snap some pics of the teardown/inspection of the proper 68 diff. This truck is becoming quite the mix and match, 68 cab and front end, 72 box, 70 frame, 68 diff, 73-87 from the tie rod sleeves out, 73 motor, repro panels, and the tranny is a B&M new, going to need a full time banjo player to ride shotgun and entertain when I get it driving

You're gonna like 4.10s except at the gas station.

Re: Finally starting the 68swb fleet

pic of the diff, it's pouring so I didn't get a chance to open it, looks gross but so did the old one prior to blasting and POR15, fender showed up today, tri plus? mixed reviews online, regardless I figure they all need to be tweaked

Re: Finally starting the 68swb fleet

the carryall we tore it out of was in a field, it's been raining lots, and it is going to the scrappers so he and I were in no rush to lay in the mud This is the inside of the diff, a welcome surprise, going to try and decipher what it is before just counting but the stamps ain't great, internals look a lot nicer than the outside though, no gear wearn not even shaving in the oil to my surprise this is the stamping to me best guess 3817778 11-41 or ||-41 6.M. ?

Re: Finally starting the 68swb fleet

to my knowledge this is actually a 3.73 posi if I decoded that correctly? that's ideal for my build really, th350, night cruiser, now to get it to sandblast

Re: Finally starting the 68swb fleet

sorry for all the rambling, I just sold all my cab patch panels as my donor is already patched up, my extra tie rods, the super cheyenne tail light setup, and factory shock mounts for $250, lost a little money on the original purchase price, well probably almost half due to shipping costs up here, but it's going to a friend on his build and it's $250 I can put into my build again. Picked up a harmonic balancer puller and plan to rebuild the motor in the next few days while everything is at sandblast and being painted. May even have a roller again with proper axles by next weekend depending on work and the availability of my cousin who is the engine guy

Re: Finally starting the 68swb fleet

pics of todays progress, had to work the afternoon so I lost out on time, should have a parts cleaner tomorrow to start the cleaning on the engine, stripped the axle for sandblast, removed the harmonic and timing set, parts should be in monday to rebuld it, rings, push rods, and new balancer if all goes well Sorry for all the small updates, I'm sure it gets boring but for me this is exciting and fun. I have always been a 4x4 guy and a square body/jeep/toyota guy, our rebuilds always consisted of crate motors, diff swaps, solid axle swaps, 4 links, and crude body work, more of the fix it as you break it type, this is a major learning curve, my first vehicle was a 72 c20 2wd and because gas was so expensive I traded it before i got my license, always said one day I would have a 67-72 shorty, as I researched them the 67 small window became a love affair, so when this 68 came my way I couldn't say no, one day I will have my 67 fleet though

Re: Finally starting the 68swb fleet

Thanks guys, the drums were not that bad actually, few smacks with a BFH and a pry bar I wrestled them off, star wheel was seized of course haha, ordered a full rear brake kit today, headers, and alternator, ripped the motor apart and prepped it for rebuild, surprisingly good shape, even the bearings, I'll post some pics, I'm just in the middle of some cleaning in the parts washer
